1. A telephone line has R=30 W/km, L=100 mH/km,
G=0, and C= 20mF/km. At 1kHz, obtain: the
characteristic impedance of the line, the
propagation constant, the phase velocity.

Solution:

R + jωL 30 + j 2π (1k )(100m) o

Zo = = = 70.75∠ − 1. 37 Ω
G + jωC 0 + j 2π (1k )20 ⋅10 −6
γ= (R + jωL )(G + jωC ) = (30 + j 2π (100))(0 + j 2π 20 ⋅10−3 ) = 0.21 + j8.88 / km

2. A generator of 1 volt, 1000Hz, supplies power
to 1000km long open wire line terminated in Z0
and having the following parameters:
R=0.4 Ω, L=0.0037 H, G=0.8 µmho, C=0.00835
µF. Calculate the phase velocity, characteristic
impedance, propagation constant and power
delivered at the receiving end.

Ans:

phase velocity= 1.77 *105km/sec

Z0=692,-12° ohms
γ =0.0755+j0.055
Power delivered to load = 317.9 µwatts
3. The characteristic impedance of a uniform
transmission line is 2039.5Ω at a frequency of
800Hz. At this frequency, the propagation
constant was found to be 0.054, 87.9°.
Determine the value of primary line constants R,
L, G and C

Ans:

R =4.563Ω/km L=24.92mH/km
G= 0.969 µmho/km C=0.0053 µFd/km
4. An open wire telephone line has R=10 Ω/km,
L=0.0037 H/km, C=0.0083 µFd/km and G=0.4
µmho/km. Determine its characteristic constant
(Z0), propagation constant (γ ), attenuation
constant(α) ad phase constant(β)

Ans:
Z0 = (683-j38) Ω
γ = (0.0074+j0.0356)
α =0.0074 neper/km
β = 0.0356 radians/km
5. A transmission line operating at 500MHz has
Zo=80 W, a=0.04Np/m,b=1.5rad/m. Find the
line parameters R,L,G, and C.

Ans:
3.2 W/m, 38.2nH/m, 0.0005 S/m, 5.97 pF/m

Z oγ = R + jωL = 3.2 + j120
