CHAPTER I
CONTEXT AND RATIONALE
Tanauan, Nueva Ecija is a hidden gem endowed with rich biodiversity, fascinating
landscapes and a vibrant cultural heritage. The potential for ecotourism in the region is
significant and offers an opportunity for sustainable development that balances economic
growth with environmental protection and community empowerment. Although potential
for ecotourism is clear, Tanauan faces challenges that require a strategic intervention
approach. The surge in global tourism has underscored the need for sustainable practices,
particularly in ecotourism—an industry premised on the delicate balance between human
enjoyment and environmental preservation. At the heart of this balance lies the challenge
of waste management, a critical aspect that necessitates intervention strategies for the
enhancement of ecotourism sustainability.

The concept of Eco-tourism has gained significant attention in recent years as a

sustainable approach to travel and exploration. With the increasing awareness of
environmental issues and the desire to preserve natural resources, communities and
organizations have been exploring various intervention approaches to enhance Eco-
tourism sustainability. “Solid waste management strategies can achieve sustainability
through reduce, reuse, and recycle principles, with geographical positions and economic
status playing key roles in waste characteristics.” according to (Subhasish Das et al. 2019)
This research embarks on a thorough examination of waste management strategies, with a
primary focus on their intervention potential in bolstering the sustainability of eco-
tourism. By delving into the current state of waste management practices, environmental
repercussions, and the intricacies of community involvement, this study aims to propose
practical, effective, and scalable interventions that can be seamlessly integrated into the
ecotourism framework.

Tanauan, Nueva Ecija, known for its diverse ecosystems and cultural heritage, has
great potential for sustainable Eco-tourism. However, like many other destinations, it faces
various challenges that hinder the achievement of long-term sustainability goals.

This approach also creates opportunities for income generation through the
provision of community-based tourism services and products. Capacity building programs,
on the other hand, will aim to empower local stakeholders, including residents, tour
operators, and government officials, by providing them with the necessary knowledge and
skills for sustainable tourism management. Training programs on waste management,
environmental conservation, and responsible tourism practices will enable them to actively
participate in safeguarding the natural and cultural assets of Tanauan.

In addition, the intervention approach will prioritize the implementation of

sustainable practices within the tourism industry. These practices may include promoting,
proper waste disposal, and minimizing the environmental impact of tourist activities. Such
initiatives will contribute not only to the immediate sustainability of Eco-tourism in
Tanauan but also to the long-term preservation of its natural resources. This research will
contribute to the existing body of knowledge on Eco-tourism interventions and provide
valuable insights for policymakers, local communities, and tourism stakeholders interested
in promoting sustainable tourism development in similar destinations.

CHAPTER II
