MISSION STATEMENT OF THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT


The teaching of the English Language at Vivek High School aims at inculcating in students’
love of the language, innovative and creative writing skills, effective articulation and
listening skills, use of imagination, and most importantly, the ability to think critically, to
arrive at a reasoned judgment. Literature and grammar are blended to help students
understand the semantics of language through usage. In addition to this, the learning
experience would aim at inculcating the twelve Discoveries of Round Square.

The Overall Aim of the Course is:

 To enable the students to communicate effectively and appropriately in real-life


situations.
 To use English effectively for study purposes across the curriculum.
 To develop and integrate the use of the four language skills i.e. Listening, Speaking,
Reading and Writing.
 To develop an interest in reading and appreciation of literature.
 Through the Critical Thinking Questions, the students will inculcate the habit of being
flexible, open-minded, and reflective.

RATIO AND PROPORTION

Learning Objective: To Enable the learner to

 Use knowledge of equivalence to simplify and compare ratios (same units).


 Understand how ratios are used to compare quantities to divide an amount into a given

represented as proper fractions, decimals and percentages.
 Identify all the possible mutually exclusive outcomes of a single event, and
recognize when they are equally likely to happen.
 Understand how to find the theoretical probabilities of equally likely outcomes.
 Design and conduct chance experiments or simulations, using small and large
numbers of trials. Analyze the frequency of outcomes to calculate experimental
probabilities.

HISTORY

1. From a kingdom to an Empire


Objectives:
a. To familiarize the learners with the rules of Ashoka and his Dhamma.
2. Villages, Towns and Trade
Objectives:
a. To enable the learners to understand the impact of agriculture and trade on
urbanization.
b. To familiarize them with the types of towns and cities.
3. New Empires and Kingdoms
Objectives:
a. To familiarize yourself with the Gupta empire.
b. To appreciate the administration of the Gupta period.
c. To identify the kingdoms of Harshvardhan, The Pallavas, and the Chalukyas on
the river map of India.
4. Buildings, Paintings And Books
Objectives:
a. To appreciate the development in different fields.
b. To familiarize the students with the importance of these developments in the
present day
CIVICS

Local Government and Administration


 This unit familiarizes the student with urban local government. It covers the urban
government & administration.
 The effort is to have the child draw the contrast and comparisons between the ways in
which urban and rural local government function.
5. Rural Administration
Objectives:
a. To enable the students to understand the role of Police, Patwari and Tehsildar.
6. Urban Administration
Objectives:
a. To familiarize the sources of income of the Municipal Corporation.
b. To enable the students to understand the Municipal Administration.

Objectives:
a. To familiarize the students with the different means of livelihood of rural areas.

Objectives:
a. To familiarize with the primary, secondary, and territory occupation in the urban
areas.
b. To enable the learners to understand the reasons for migration.

Evaluation The students will be assessed on Class work, oral response, teamwork, and
participation in class discussions. Progress checks will be given, and certain evaluations
based on reasoned judgment will be conducted. Critical challenges will be done to develop
analytical thinking and develop habits of mind – open-mindedness, and fair-mindedness.

SA-II Final Exams

 This chapter will be assessed through the project work.

Civics- Chapter 5 Panchayati Raj

 This chapter will be assessed again for the FINALS.

All other topics covered in October to March will be tested in the Final examination.

GEOGRAPHY

October-December

(1) Chapter 5- Major Domains of the Earth

Research Activity: Major Landforms of the Earth.

This term students will learn about the major domains of the earth i.e. Lithosphere,
Hydrosphere, Atmosphere and how they are interlinked to form the Biosphere, where life can
exist. They will also study the different oceans, continents of the world. Study of different
landforms of the earth like mountains, plateaus, plains will also be done and students will
understand how they affect the quality of life of humans. Map skills will be enhanced when
students will do map work showing the location of the continents, oceans, mountains,
plateaus, deserts.

Assessment Plan from October to December Students will be assessed on classwork, oral
responses, team work and participation in class discussions and class projects. Regular
progress checks will be held and map work skills will be assessed.

Chapter 6 Our Country – India

Research Activity: India: Climate, Vegetation and Wildlife

The objective of this term for Geography is to make students aware of the location of our
country and also the natural regions in our country. Thereafter the students will study the
climate and the effect of mountains, rivers and river plains, plateaus on the life of the people.
Students will study the locational setting of India as per latitude and longitude, its
neighboring countries, and its states. The natural vegetation, forests, wildlife of India will be
studied. Extensive atlas and map work will be done. Map skills will be enhanced when
students will do the location of the mountains, plateaus, deserts, rivers and river plains on the
map of India.

Assessment Plan from January to March Students will be assessed on classwork, oral
responses, team work and participation in class discussions and class projects. Regular
progress checks will be held and map work skills will be assessed.

Skills tested: background knowledge of topic, logical reasoning, correct use of atlas, correct
map reading and correct marking of the maps.
