INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
(a) Poisonous hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is an important industrial chemical .It is produced
from methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3) and molecular oxygen, as shown below. This
reaction produces water as a byproduct. An industrial manufacturer wants to convert 175
kg of methane into HCN. How much molecular oxygen (in kg) will be required for this
synthesis?
𝐶𝐻4 + 𝑁𝐻3 + 𝑂2 → 𝐻𝐶𝑁 + 𝐻2 𝑂
[16 marks]
(b) The purest form of elemental carbon is diamond with density is 3.51 kg/L. The mass of
the diamond is expressed in terms of carat where 1 carat = 0.200 g. Calculate the volume
(cm3) of diamond in a 2.00 carat diamond jewel. [6 marks]
(c) Write the chemical formula for the following compounds and identify the cations present
in them
(i) Stannous iodide. [2 marks]
(ii) Sodium hydrogen phosphate. [2 marks]
(a) Calcium carbide (CaC2) is a greyish black hard solid with a melting point of 2000 ºC. This
compound reacts strongly with water to produce a gas and a solution containing
hydroxide (OH-) ions. A 12.8 g sample of CaC2 was reacted with excess water. The
resulting gas was collected in an evacuated 5.00 L gas bulb with a mass of
1254.49 g .The filled bulb had a mass of 1259.70 g and a pressure of 0.988 atm when its
temperature was 26.8 ºC . The Value of gas constant, R = 0.0821 L. atm/ mol. K.
(i) Calculate the molar mass of the unknown gas. [12 marks]
(ii) Determine the molecular formula of the gas when the ratio between the carbon
and hydrogen atoms is 1:1. [4 marks]
(b) In a chemistry laboratory, hydro bromic acid (HBr) is reacted with potassium hydroxide
(KOH). Find the volume (mL) of the 1.50 M hydro bromic acid that will react with 44.0 g
of potassium hydroxide. [10 marks]

(a) The density of 26% (mass %) phosphoric acid (H3PO4) solution is 1.79 g/mL. Determine
the number of moles of H3PO4 contained in 1.00 L of this solution. [10 marks]
(b) In a chemical reaction between potassium chloride (KCl) solution and lead nitrate
[Pb(NO3)2] solution, lead (II) chloride (PbCl2) will be precipitated, when sufficient lead
nitrate solution reacts with 640 mL of 0.120 M potassium chloride solution. Determine the
quantity (g) of lead (II) chloride precipitated. [16 marks]
(a) Write the dissociation reaction for the dissolution of calcium iodide and determine the
concentration (molarity) of calcium ions in the solution when the iodide ion concentration
is 0.420 M. [5 marks]
(b) Write the ionic equations in the formation of a precipitate of AgCl formed by combining
aqueous solutions of cobalt chloride and silver nitrate.
[5 marks]
(c) Differentiate between strong electrolyte and weak electrolyte with an example. [5 marks]
(d) Give two examples for strong acids. [2 marks]
