Basic Definitions
1. Circuit: It is a Conducting part through which either
Electric current flows or is intended to flow.

2. Linear Circuit: Circuit in which circuit parameters do not

change with change in V & I.

3. Parameter: Elements of Circuit R,L & C are called

parameters

4. Bilateral Circuits: Whose Properties or characteristics are

same in both directions . R,L & C etc are bilateral circuit
elements
Nibha Desai,SAKEC 3
5. Unilateral Circuit: Properties or Characteristics of a
circuit change with the direction of its operation.
Ex. Diode

6. Electrical Network: Combination of Various Electric

elements, connected to one another is called Electrical
Network.

7. Passive Network: Circuit which does not contain any

source of emf called Passive Network.

8. Active Network: Circuit which contains one or more

sources of emf.
Nibha Desai,SAKEC 4
9. Resistance: Property or a substance due to which it
opposes the flow of current through it. Unit = Ω

10. Laws of Resistance: R depends upon following

factors
 Varies directly as its length l
 Inversely ∝ to A , of the conductor
 Nature of Material
 Temperature of the conductor
𝑙
𝑅= 𝜌
𝐴
𝜌 = Constant → Depends upon, the nature of Material
called resistivity or Specific resistance
