TITLE: Information on Fuses Containing Asbestos

2. PURPOSE
It was reported by Airbus Helicopters that specific fuses amongst the fuses used to protect the
electrical power supply system may contain asbestos depending upon the period in which the
fuses were manufactured.
This Service News provides information on fuses that may contain asbestos.

3. IDENTIFICATION OF FUSES THAT MAY CONTAIN ASBESTOS

Amongst the fuses shown in section 1.(2), fuses that may contain asbestos are components
manufactured up to 1996. (Fuses for which the manufacture date is unknown are also treated as
components that may contain asbestos.)
Fuses manufactured on or after January 1, 1997 are not subject to this information.
Figure 1 shows the fuse external appearance, while figure 2 shows the manufacture date markings.
The two manufacture date formats are described in the following.

- If the manufacture date marking is on the fuse upper surface: YY-WW

(indicating the year and the month). (Refer to figure 2A.)
- If the manufacture date marking is on the fuse side surface: DD-MMM-YYYY
(indicating the day, month, and year). (Refer to figure 2B.)

4. INSTALLATION LOCATION OF FUSES THAT MAY CONTAIN ASBESTOS

(1) Installation Position of Fuse FU1540-225 (Refer to Figure 3)
This fuse is used in the rescue winch system (117-83500-01) on helicopter models C-1 and
prior. This fuse (F802) is equipped in the fuse box below the junction box on the aft LH side of
the cabin.

(2) Installation Position of Fuse FU1540-130 (Refer to Figure 4)

This fuse is used in the rescue winch system (B851K2801-051/-052/-053) on C-2 model
helicopters. This fuse (F70037) is equipped in the No. 1 power distribution box on the LH-side
ceiling of the cabin.

(3) Installation Position of Fuse FU1540-80 (Refer to Figure 5)

This fuse is used in searchlight-SX-16 (B334K6801-051, B334K6814-051) on C-2 model
helicopters. This fuse (F70010) is equipped in the No. 2 power distribution box on the RH-side
ceiling of the cabin.

5. HANDLING FUSES THAT MAY CONTAIN ASBESTOS

If there are already fuses that may contain asbestos equipped on a helicopter, asbestos fibers will
not be released into the atmosphere during normal fuse use and replacement work. As such, usage
of these fuses has no effect on the health of personnel and/or on the airworthiness of the target
helicopters.
When replacing a fuse that may contain asbestos, dispose of said fuse in accordance with the laws
of each country and/or ordinances of the respective local governments.
