Why Masters?
I realized this as a child from my father, a ceaseless learner. He asked questions, never took “No” for an
answer and I saw him become a powerful career person, recognized as a high flier in every organization
he worked for. And now, almost 60 years of age, he still swears he has to learn a lot more and do things
even better. Having learnt from him that success is a moving target, the years of my own life with my
family have honed my own skills to never aim or demand anything, less than perfect and It is this
philosophy and put myself in a position to do so that, I wish to pursue my Masters and later my Doctoral
studies.

Educational Background
Education has always been the first priority throughout my life. I finished my schooling under the Central
Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi and passed out with an excellent result of 83%. By this time I
had developed great interest in the field of Electronics and Communication and pursued electronics as
one of my subject at my pre-university level. I passed out with a distinction result of 87%. At my pre-
university level I got very much motivated by the electronics subject and chose to pursue my degree in
Electronics and Communication and hence I happened to join BNMIT, affiliated to Vishveshwaraya
Technological University (V.T.U), Belgaum. Though I do not believe that marks and ranks are the sole
criterion for judging the capabilities of a person, but I believe it establishes the level of dedication and
interest I profess in my chosen discipline.

I’m currently pursuing my final year and till date my aggregate has been close to 80%. My great asset
happens to by knowledge in the subject of Math and in my Freshmen and Sophomore years of Bachelors
Course, I’ve secured an average of 97 marks out of 100. I’ve a strong foundation in courses of Calculus
and Analysis, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations, Probability, Statistics, etc. My love for
programming was quenched when I did a project relating to Embedded system. I successfully completed a
project based on Microcontrollers titled “Secured Room Access Module”. This project mainly deals with
a security system which enables only the authorized personnel to enter a room. I also hold the credit of
presenting a paper on the above topic at National Level Paper Presentation and Project Exhibition for
UG/PG students of Electrical Science Branches (NLPPES-10) held at RV College of Engineering,
Bangalore and am proud to mention that my paper was published at National Conference on Advanced
Techniques in Electrical Engineering (NCATEE-10) held at SJB Institute of Technology, Bangalore.

During my Bachelors course, fields like Microcontrollers, Microprocessors, Analog Communication, Digital
Communication, Information Theory and Coding, Object Oriented Programming (C++) built a strong
foundation to my knowledge towards one lively branch Digital Signal Processing. With great enthusiasm
and special interest, I learnt programming in MATLAB and implemented several problems relating to it .
Speech processing is one field which I’ve been off late interested in. Recently one of my paper got
selected for an IEEE Conference, “ International Conference on Communications and Signal Processing
(ICCSP 2011)” to be held in Feb 2011 at NIT, Calicut. This paper titled “Artificial Bandwidth Extension
of Narrowband Speech Using Gaussian Mixture Model” was the outcome of a project on the same
problem, which I carried out under the guidance of Mr. Murali Mohan D, Software Architect, NXP
Semiconductors and I would like to make a mention here that, this was out of my sheer interest and not
related to the academic curriculum. This was a more research oriented experience and I thoroughly
enjoyed it.

Exploring different streams in Electronics field, I came across one interesting branch - Robotics. Along
with two of my team mates, we built an autonomous line following robot using microcontroller and
participated at various competitions held at different colleges. I’ve also been a part of a Robotics
workshop conducted by ROBOTAH Company at National Institute of Technology, Suratkal. Overall, I
have good essence of different fields in electronics and communication.

My Field of Interest
I’ve also decided that my final year project would be exclusively on Digital Signal Processing. I’ve been
assigned a guide and the project is due for completion by April 2011. I would like to pursue my Masters in
the field of Digital Signal Processing and Communications which has fascinated me in under graduate
studies and have also gathered immense knowledge in the same.
Though in terms of knowledge I stand to gain more than I can contribute, but it is my abilities as a person
and my attitude towards life in general which I believe will help enriching the already rich texture of your
university.

Why United State of America and _____________University in particular

It is precisely this reason that I have chosen US of A and University of ______________ in particular as
my destination for pursuing higher education. US of A is one of the few countries where the education
system tries to understand the true calling of the individual than just judge him on his grades or marks.

I have been especially impressed by the research work in progress by Dr. ____________ in the areas of
________________, ________________ and _____________ and Dr. _________________ in the areas
of ______________, ______________ and ________________ along with the all-encompassing nature
of the program; I have been especially impressed by the research centers like ____________laboratory
and _________________ laboratory and the research areas of your faculties. Thus I strongly feel the
program at _______University Name ___________ is tailor-made to suit my requirements.

The vision of your University and department in particular I feel will be able to understand my aspirations
and give me a chance to realize my potential to the fullest. The Masters Degree, and later the Doctoral
degree I wish to pursue is just a means to the end where in my ultimate aim is to contribute to the larger
picture of human civilization.

My Other Achievements
I’ve been participating in Extra-curricular activities throughout my student and professional life. Dramatics
and Theatre has been one of my passions and I’ve performed several stage events. I was also a part of
Kalabhageerathi cultural team in BNMIT, which recently won overall championships at university level
competitions. I’ve been recognized as a good orator and I’m narrator of ‘mad-ads’ team where we
perform comical stage shows to impress variegated audience. Playing Tennis is one of my favorite
hobbies and I represent my college BNMIT, at university level competitions.

The emotional part of mine has made me to be a part of non-governmental organization Youth for Seva,
which basically aims at providing education to under-privileged children. I’ve been a part of community
service from the past two years through street plays, volunteering for different purposes, and help by
being a scribe for blind, etc. Writing blog is one of my favorite pastimes. I touch upon various subjects
that motivate me and write my views about it. (www.dileepkarpur.blogspot.com) I’ve undergone training
programs on soft skills conducted by Infosys and Technical training and group discussion program
conducted by Smart Training Resources, Chennai.

My Short term and Long term goals

As mentioned earlier my immediate goals are to create a solid foundation of knowledge in my fields of
interest by completing my Masters and later my doctoral studies.
My long- term goals are to be associated with path breaking research in my chosen discipline, either at the
academic or industrial level. And it is more with a view towards gaining an opportunity to be associated
with current trends and research that I request you to grant me an assistantship.
