FOCUS ON...

Disguises
People dress up in disguises when they want to change their appearance in some way.
Sometimes it’s just for fun. People wear costumes to go to a party for example. This is
called, ‘Fancy Dress’. In The Thirty-Nine Steps, people use a lot of disguises, but they don’t
do this for fun. They do it because they want to hide something.
Many famous stories in books and films have characters that use disguises in this way. The
characters have something to hide, but the reasons they hide may be different. Look at
these examples, and write down why you think they use a disguise.

1 The Odyssey Homer

Odysseus arrives at the island of Ithaca disguised as a poor person

2 Superman Jerry Siegel

Superman disguises himself as Clark Kent, a
Newspaper photographer.

3 Measure for Measure William Shakespeare

A Duke goes to his kingdom disguised as a
monk, a man of the church.

4 Madame Doubtfire Anne Fine

A man dresses up as a woman, so that he can
be a babysitter for his children
