CALIBRATION OF MEASUREMENT AND TEST EQUIPMENT

1.1. GENERAL :

All measurement, examination and test equipment used to fulfill Code

requirements, are calibrated in accordance with written calibration procedures
approved by the Quality Control Manager.

1.2. CALIBRATION PROCEDURES :

10.2.1. All measurement, examination and test equipment are permanently

identified by marking the item or it’s container with a unique serial number
identifiable to the equipment.
10.2.2. The QC Inspector is responsible for maintaining all equipment calibrated
and recorded on Calibration Log (Exhibit 10-01), unless out of service and
clearly marked “NOT CALIBRATED”.
10.2.3. Calibration may be performed by a qualified testing laboratory which
provides certified records of calibration, and has a suitable Standards
whose accuracy is traceable to National or International Standards.
Calibration Certificates received from external laboratories are reviewed by
the QC Inspector who shall initial the certificate when it complies with the
calibration procedure.
10.2.4. The frequency and accuracy of calibration and tolerances are indicated in
the company’s procedure and are determined from the manufacturer’s
recommendations, or from experience with the instrument, unless specified
by the Code, National or International Standards.
10.2.5. Pressure gauges used for hydrostatic, pneumatic or proof testing are
calibrated against a standard dead-weight tester or calibrated master
gauge.
10.2.6. Calibration of radiographic densitometer is verified by the RT Level III with
calibrated step wedge calibration film or step tablet every 90 days, as
required by the Code.
10.2.7. Impact test machines used shall have calibration certificate as per ASTM E-
23 or ISO-148. Thermometers used for impact testing shall be calibrated
every 6 months and shall have accuracy of ± 1⁰C.
10.2.8. Temperature recorders shall be calibrated within a period not more than 12
months.

1.3. CALIBRATION RECORDS :

10.3.1. Each in house calibrated instrument that has Internal Calibration Certificate
(Exhibit 10-02) is maintained by QC Inspector in the calibration file.
10.3.2. All equipment is attached by a Calibration Label (Exhibit 10-03) which records
the serial No., Validity of calibration date.
10.3.3. QC Manager shall also verify records of calibration of subcontractors (e.g.
heat treatment recorder, thermocouples, universal and impact test
machines). Record shall be maintained on file.

1.4. DISCREPANT EQUIPMENT :

10.4.1. When instruments are found out of calibration or damaged, the QC Inspector
tags the item with a “NOT CALIBRATED” label, removes it from the work
area and arranges for calibration or replacement.
10.4.2. If a Code item is checked using discrepant instruments, a Nonconformance
Report shall be issued and dealt with as described in Sec. 6 of this Manual.
Traceability of the instruments used is established from the inspection
reports / test reports.
10.4.3. The identification of measuring equipment in fulfillment of Code requirements
shall be entered in relevant reports for traceability.
10.4.4. Care shall be taken during critical measurements such as use of multiple
pressure gauges during pressure test and use of instruments with higher
accuracy for critical dimensions to avoid possibility of error in
measurements.
