ESci 112 – Calculus for Engineers I

Topic: Analytic Proofs

In exercises 1 to 4, the points 𝐴, 𝐵, 𝐶, and 𝐷 are vertices of a quadrilateral. In each case, determine whether the
quadrilateral is a trapezoid (T), a parallelogram (P), a rhombus (Rh), a rectangle (Re), a square (S), on none of
these (N).
1. 𝐴(1, 3), 𝐵(2, 5), 𝐶(6, 17), 𝐷(5, 15) ans. T, P
2. 𝐴(3, −1), 𝐵(2, −6), 𝐶(1, 7), 𝐷(0, −8) ans. N
3. 𝐴(2, 3), 𝐵(4, 1), 𝐶(0, −8), 𝐷(−5, −3) ans. T
4. 𝐴(3, 0), 𝐵(3, 5), 𝐶(0,9), 𝐷(0, 4) ans. P, T, Rh
Prove analytically each of the following.
5. The midpoint of the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equidistant from the three vertices.
6. The line segments joining the midpoints of opposite sides of a quadrilateral bisect each other.
7. The diagonals of a rhombus are perpendicular.
8. If the diagonals of a parallelogram are congruent, the parallelogram is a rectangle.
9. The diagonals of a rectangle are congruent.
10. If the diagonals of a trapezoid bisect each other, the trapezoid is a parallelogram.
11. The line segments which join the midpoints of adjacent sides of any quadrilateral form a parallelogram.
