SHEET METAL Ahmad zrng A1

Sheet metal is simply metal formed into thin and flat pieces. It is one of the fundamental forms
used in metalworking, it can be cut and bent into a variety of different shapes. Countless
everyday objects are constructed of the material. Thicknesses can vary significantly,

Required equipment :

• Sheets of metal
• Straight ruler : used to draw lines and make certain measurements
• Snipes : which is similar to a scissor used to cut the sheets
• Pliers : a tool with handles at one end and, flat, metal part at the other end
• Scraper : is a tool that has a small handle at one end and a blade at the other
end and can be used for scraping a particular surface
• Divider : consisting of two straight adjustable legs hinged together and ending in
sharp points. Used for measuring and transferring certain distances
• Tape rule : a flexible ruler used to measure size or distance
• drill : a tool with a sharp point and cutting edges for making holes in hard
materials
• Throatless Shears :The throatless shears feature a heavy steel frame These
tools allow you to cut effortlessly, its top blade that is arched
• Bracket Makers : The 90° tools and radius tools of this equipment are very
helpful in bracket formation
• metal roller benders: can create a wide array of arcs, bends, cylinders and
circular objects
• anvil: a heavy iron block with a flat top and concave sides, on which metal can
be hammered and shaped
• Vice: device consisting of two parallel jaws for holding a workpiece
• rivet gun: type of tool used to drive rivets
Exercise number 1
Making scoop
Objective: making a scoop out of metal sheets
In this exercise we will be talking about how to make a scoop by metal sheeting
Step 1: we start by drawing on the metal sheet a dimension of 240mm *220mm .
Step 2: we cut along the lines by using the Throatless Shears .
Step 3: we draw a horizontal line 60 mm below the top
Then another horizontal line 40mm below the 60mm line
Then another horizontal line 10mm below the 40mm line
Then another horizontal line 60mm below the 10mm line
Then another horizontal line 45mm below the 60mm line.
Then another horizontal line 5mm below the 45mm line
Step 4: we draw a vertical line 60mm from the right
Then draw a vertical line 120mm from the vertical 60mm line
Then draw a vertical line 60mm from the vertical 120mm line .
Step 5: we draw a semicircle in the top middle box by using the compass and putting it on the
top middle of the second horizontal line at an angle of 60.
Step 6: we draw 0.25of a circle by putting the compass on the edge of the sheet from the right
and 110mm above the bottom at an at angle of 60
Then we draw 0.25of a circle by putting the compass on the edge of the sheet from the left and
110mm above the bottom at angle of 60
After that draw two vertical lines 5mm away from one the right and the other on the left of the
bottom box.
Step 7: start cutting along the drawn 0.25of a circles and the hemisphere
Then cut the top three boxes ( one below the other ) from the right and left of the sheet.
Step 8: cut the bottom box using the snipes vertically to the 5th drawn horizontal line.
Step 9: bring another metal sheet and cut it to a dimension of 100mm by 100mm
Then use the ruler to draw a large x that reachs out from each corner
Then use the draw a circle using the compass by putting it on the middle of the x at an angle of
40mm
Then use the draw another circle using the compass by putting it on the middle of the x at an
angle of 45mm
then draw a vertical line 50mm above the bottom of the square
from the middle of the square along the vertical line draw a point 20mm to the right of the
middle point
from the middle of the square along the vertical line draw a point 20mm to the left of the
middle point
then use the drill to cut the drawn points
then using the snipes cut along the 90mm diameter circle
then make small vertical cuts the smaller the better to the 80mm diameter circle
then bend the cut vertical lines inwards using the pliers.
step 10: bring another sheet of metal and cut it to a dimension of 220mm by 20mm
then draw two square boxes one on the top of the rectangle and the other on the bottom with
a dimension of 20mm by 20mm
then draw two large x (one on each box ) along the box’s extent
then use the drill to cut two holes (one on each box ) on the middle of the x
then bend the two boxes inwards using the pliers
then bend the metal sheet using hands to a semicircle shape.
step 11: we pass the largest piece through the metal roller bender to be bent to a cylindrical
shape.
we bring the largest piece and hold it on the vice along the 5mm drawn line on the bottom box
and bend it .We do this procedure for both of the lines (right and left).
then hold it on the concave part of the anvil and bend the two bent parts together
then bend the cut vertical lines outwards using the pliers.
step 12: bring the cylindrical shaped piece and put it in the circular cut sheet of metal
and bend their vertical cuts together.
step 13: bring the semicircular shaped piece and put its two holes along the two holes of
the circular shaped piece and use the rivet gun to insert a rivet into the hole by
compressing the gun three times.
During this project you might face certain common errors for me it was bending the lines
incorrectly by not bending it on the line which causes the cylinder not to close properly
and open during the procedure but if this happens I recommend straightening the bend
and doing it properly along the lines again .
