THIRD TERM EXAMINATION 2020/2021 ACADEMIC SESSION

CLASS: SS 2 SUBJECT: PHYSICS PRACTICAL [ PAPER 3] DURATION: 1½ HOURS
[25 marks]
INSTRUCTIONS:
i. Do not not touch the apparatus until you must have read through this paper.
ii. You are required to record your measurement as soon as they are read.
iii. Write boldly and legibly in ink (preferably blue or black) and state your answers precisely.
iv. Use pencil (e.g 2B) to plot your graph.

ILLUMINATED OBJECT
LENS SCREEN
RAY BOX "

You are provided with metre rule, lens, screen, ray box and other necessary apparatus.
(i) Set up the experiment as shown in the diagram above. Measure and record the diameter a 0 of
the illuminated object.
(ii) Place the object at a distance x=25 cm from the lens. Adjust the screen until a sharp image is
obtained on the screen.
(iii) Measure and record the diameter , of the image.
(iv) Measure and record the distance v between the lens and the screen.

(v) Evaluate y= , P= and T =x +v
a0 y
(vi) Repeat the procedure for x=30 cm , 35 cm, 40 cm and 45 cm. In each case, determine the
corresponding values of a , v , y , P and T .
(vii) Tabulate your results.
(viii) Plot a graph of P on the vertical axis against T on the horizontal axis starting both axes from the
origin (0, 0).
(ix) Determine the slope, S, of the graph and the intercept, C , on the horizontal axis.
C
(x) Evaluate k =
2
(xi) State two precautions taken to ensure accurate results. [21 marks]

(b) (i) State Snell’s law of refraction of light. [2 marks]

(ii) An object is placed at a distance x from a converging lens of focal length 20 cm . If the
magnification of the real image formed by the lens is 5, calculate the value of x . [2 marks]
