GENERAL MATHEMATICS:
Exponential Functions
Week 2
MELCs:
At the end of the session, you must be able to:
M11GM-If-2 represents an exponential function through its:
(a) table of values, (b) graph, and (c) equation.
M11GM-If-3 finds the domain and range of an exponential
function.
M11GM-If-4 determines the intercepts, zeroes, and
asymptotes of an exponential function.
Then, plot the values on a Cartesian plane. You may use paper
and pencil or any applicable graphing apps such as MS Excel,
GeoGebra, or Desmos.

Representations of
Exponential Functions
Now, observe that
there is a set of values that can
be found in x (t as used in the
preceding problem) which
corresponds to a certain value
in f(x). In the case of the
exponential function, the
values of f(x) curves rapidly on
a given value of x.
This is the characteristic of an
exponential function that
differentiates it from other
functions.
Graph of Exponential Functions
𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥
Substitute the values of x to the function to get f(x).

PROPERTIES OF EXPONENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
𝒇 𝒙 = 𝟑𝒙 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝒈 𝒙 = 𝟒𝒙
x -2 -1 0 1
x -2 -1 0 1
f(x) 1/9 1/3 1 3 For both functions:
g(x) 1/16 1/4 1 4
x -2 -1 0 1
f(x) 1/9 1/3 1 3
g(x) 1/16 1/4 1 4 The two graphs have the same
domain, range, y – intercept,
and horizontal asymptote.
However, the graph of g(x)
rises faster than does f(x), and
is closer to the x-axis if x < 0.
Example 2:

𝒈 𝒙 = 𝟒−𝒙 or 𝒈 𝒙 = ( )𝒙

x -2 -1 0 1 2
x -2 -1 0 1 2
