Subject: Encoder Discontinued by Manufacturer

Product Model: TDS-8SA and TDS-1000 Top Drive Drilling Systems

Effectivity: All Product Models with Encoder, Incremental (P/N 30122725-HE)

Affected Assemblies: Motor Housing Assembly (Multiple Part Nos.)

Objective
To inform customers that the encoder used on the TDS-8SA and TDS-1000 top drives has been
discontinued by the manufacturer and to provide suggestions regarding replacement if spares are
required.

Issue
The manufacturer has discontinued Encoder, Digital EEX (P/N 30122725-HE). An alternative
replacement encoder has been identified by the manufacturer, Encoder, Digital, SPR-10
ATEX/IECEX/CSA/EAC (P/N 18388048-001), but it is equipped with a smaller housing and requires
different mounting features. See figures 1 through 3 below.

The replacement encoder was shipped to NOV from the manufacturer under the old part number.
Customers may have received these and had issues with installation due to the issues described above.

An easy way to identify which encoder the customer possesses is to look for the model number on the
label. The label on the new encoders specifies manufacturer model number “SPR-10”, whereas the label
on the old encoder specifies model number “HSP1014”.

Solution
NOV has developed the Kit, Encoder Replacement (P/N 18425640-001) that provides the new encoder
and all additional parts and instructions to replace the existing encoder. The replacement encoder is
electrically identical to the old encoder. No cabling or software changes are required.

Customers that have encoder P/N 30122725-HE and need a replacement have two options.

1. The encoder P/N 30122725-HE can be ordered until the NOV stock is exhausted.
2. The Encoder Replacement Kit 18425640-001 can be ordered to replace the 30122725-HE
encoder with the 18388048-001 encoder, and the Kit provides all required components and
assembly instructions.

Customers that have previously ordered the 30122725-HE encoder and received a 18388048-001
encoder can order kit 17766633-003. This kit supplies all components and instruction needed to install
the 18388048-001 encoder, but does not include the encoder.

Economic Impact
All parts and installation are at Customer cost for equipment outside of Warranty period. Parts
will be supplied by NOV, delivered FCA, NOV facility, (Incoterms 2010), for all equipment
defined by NOV to be affected by the above described issue. If the equipment is still under
warranty, Please contact National Oilwell Varco (NOV) Aftermarket at RA-AM@nov.com with
reference to PB# 1000064384-POB, where cases will be handled on an individual basis in
accordance with contractual obligations.
