TECHNICAL REPORT

(A GIS Based Technical Analysis of the daily energy

consumption at Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel, Kavre)

Suman Raj Poudel

MPPOES 2022-24
Introduction:

Kathmandu University is the third oldest university in Nepal, located in Dhulikhel

of Kavrepalanchok District, about 30 km (19 mi) east of Kathmandu. It
was established in 1991 with the motto "Quality Education for
Leadership." KU operates through its seven schools, and campuses in Dhulikhel,
Patan, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur. The university offers undergraduate, graduate and
postgraduate courses in a variety of fields.

Data Used:
Our base data is a satellite image taken from the internet of Kathmandu University. The vector
data is then digitized and used for spatial analysis.

Methodology:
In this section, we define how we generate maps and use different specifications to define the
suitability. Technical procedures for the analysis are shortly described step-by-step as follows.

1.Planning and Setting:

Firstly, we make sure the hardware and software part
of the system (computer and software) is sufficient to
achieve our target. Total area of our study will be
1km*1km. Along with we confirm the projection
system (Transverse Mercator) and coordination
system (Everest_Adj_Transverse_Mercator) for this
task. The softwares used for processing are ArcMap
10.5 & ArcCatalog 10.5.
2.Data Acquisition:
For the mapping purpose we take (crop) an image from the satellite image covering whole study
area.
3.Georefrencing:

After the image is added to

ArcMap, they are georeferenced
using the georeferencing tool. The
image is georeferenced using four
coordinates of control points taken
from withing the boundary of KU.
The RMS error in this georeferencing was obtained 0.828(forward).

4.Creating Shapefiles:

We are now ready to generate vector data. We have to create various shape files according to the
requirement of our analysis. We use ArcCatalog for this purpose. We create 5 shapefiles as
shown in the table below.
SN Shape file Feature Type

1 Overall boundary Polygon

2 Internal Boundary Polygon

3 Individual Buildings Polygon

4 Roads Polyline

5 Parking Spaces Polygon

5.Digitization:

In this step, we start to generate vector layers. Vector data of each shape file is manually
digitized. Editor tool is used to generate these vectors. In the attribute table a separate field is
added to distinguish the polygon vectors based on the name of buildings and categorized area.

Analysis:
Here, we need to work on the Shapefile containing individual buildings. We open the attribute
table, add new field and start editing. We add the daily energy demand value manually to the
table. We save the edit, and stop editing. We then open properties, and we open Symbology.
Under the sub-section quantities, we selected graduated colors, in the field, we choose the field
in which we have the energy value, in our case it is in the field range. We choose 10 classes, and
select the option of having class ranges according to feature value.
Output
6. Land Use Map:

As an output of the multiple steps defined above, we are now ready with our map. We have
different layers(vector) of roads, buildings and the categorized area of KU. We have used our
collected energy data to represent it on the map under Symbology.

7.Map Layout:

After generating all the features, we use different tools of map layout to make it clear and
understandable. The map is prepared in A4 size paper format. We use cartographic tools to make
the map look complete and attractive. Attribute features of various Shape files are displayed in
the layout as Legend. Additionally, a title, a north arrow, scale bar, scale, coordinate system and
authors name are added. The final map with effective layout is finalized which looks like:
