ALL ABOUTNEWS CASTING

AECS 2015

PREFACE
News Casting is a competition where the participants will deliver news as professional
anchors on television. This competition has 3 rounds with different content on each round (News
and Weather Forecast in Preliminary Round, Live Report in Semi Final Round, and talkshow in
Final Round). Maximum duration of each participant performance is 8 minutes for Preliminary
Round and 7 minutes for Semi Final and 10 minutesfor Final round (includes opening and closing
sentence).

PARTICIPANTS
1. The participants consist of 40 high school students.
2. The competition is opened for senior high school students in Java and invited schools of
Sumatera and Bali.

COMPETITION SEQUENCES
This competition has 3 rounds with different content on each round.
1. Preliminary Round
 News Reading & Weather Forecast
2. Semi Final Round
 Live Report
3. Final Round
 Talkshow

Note:
1. 10 participants with the highest score in the Preliminary Round will proceed to the Semi-
Final Round.
2. 5 participants with the highest score in the Semi-Final Round will proceed to the Final
Round.
3. The winners will be the 1st and the 2nd

GENERAL RULES
1. Every participant in this competition must be a high school student.
2. The participants compete individually.
3. Every participant is required to re-register before the competition starts.
4. Every participant should be present punctually (at least 15 minutes before the competition
starts). We don’t compromise with all of the lateness. The name of each participant will be
called three times. If the participant is not present, the participant will perform in the last
turn. If the participant is still not present in the last turn, the participant is declared to be
disqualified and the registration fee cannot be taken back.
5. There will be a reduction as much as 10 points for the participants who come late.
6. Every participant should obey the strict rules of clothing especially made for this
competition (for details, see specific rules), failure to act accordingly will lead to
disqualification.
7. Every participant/representative has to attend the Technical Meeting (see specific rules).
8. Maximum duration of each participant performance is 8 minutes for preliminary round, 7
minutes for semi-final and 10 minutes for final round (include opening and closing
sentence). Incompliance to the duration of the preparation and the performance will
decrease the point. If the participant exceeds the specified time limit, the points will be
decreased 10 points per minute.
The cues of the competition are:
a. The green sign is the signal for the participant to start;
b. The yellow sign indicates 2 minute left for the remaining time; and
c. The red sign indicates that the time for reading the news is running out and the
participant must stop performing.

The participant should not make a mistake when they perform because the duration will
keep running, we do not compromise to start all over again.

9. All participants should respect and appreciate every judgment from the adjudicators.
10. The registration fee for the participant who is disqualified or resigns is not refundable.
SPECIFIC RULES
TECHNICAL MEETING
1. The technical meeting will be held on September, 18th 2015.

2. Each participant/representative has to attend the technical meeting; one must confirm to the
committee if he/she cannot attend the technical meeting. For participant or representative
who does not attend the technical meeting, they will be disqualified.

3. Participant substitution or change of name of participant is only allowed before and during
the technical meeting.
4. Each participant has to submit the text of preliminary round both soft file and hard file to
the committee. For the soft file, please submit on 17 September 2015, at 11:59 p.m. (for
the latest time) to ajengmeidinaf@gmail.com (title: Newscasting_Name_School).
Meanwhile, for the hard file, please submit 3 hard copies of the news text in the technical
meeting. Submit the text punctually, otherwise there will be the decreasing point as much
as 10 points forlateness.

Note: the text is only submitted for preliminary round.

Preliminary Round, Semi-final Round, & Final Round


Any person should not enter or leave the competition room when a participant is performing
because it may cause a distraction toward the participant.

PRELIMINARY ROUND
1. Materials of the Competition
The materials for the competition on this round consist of news and weather forecast
a. News
Each participant has to perform 1 (one) news topic from a specific theme chosen and prepared
by him/herself in accordance with the theme. The themes for preliminary round are:
1) Economy: Indonesia in facing AEC (ASEAN Economic Community) 2015.
2) International issue: America’s Bill on Same-Sex Marriage.
3) Crime: Killings and Oppressions on African American Communities.
The maximum time that will be given is 5 minutes. The committee will give a sign to start the
performance (green flag), the last 2 minutes (yellow flag), and at the end of the duration (red
flag). If the participant exceeds the specified time limit, the points will be decreased 10 points
per minute.

b. Weather Forecast
1) Each participant has to perform 1 (one) weather forecast topic. The picture can be
downloaded in AECS website.
2) The maximum time that will be given is 3 minutes. The committee will give a sign to start
the performance (green flag), the last 1 minute (yellow flag), and at the end of the duration
(red flag). If the participant exceeds the specified time limit, the points will be decreased
10 points per minute.
2. Physical Appearance
 Every participant must keep his/her appearance neat and clean; this includes hair neatness.
 A minimal use of the cosmetics is allowed for the participants.
 Every participant that disobey the physical appearance rules will be disqualified

a. Tops
1) Every participant has to wear a formal shirt. Participants are not allowed to wear a t-shirt
2) Every participant has to wear a blazer and not allowed to wear any form of jacket; that
includes school jacket.
b. Skirt or trouser
1) Male participants have to wear a formal trouser.
2) Female participants are allowed to wear a formal trouser or a formal skirt.
3) Every participant is not allowed to wear jeans.

c. Shoes
1) Male participants have to wear loafer shoes.
2) Female participants are allowed to wear loafer shoes or pump heels.
3) Every participant is not allowed to wear any forms of sandals and sneakers.
SEMI FINAL ROUND
1. Materials of the Competition
The materials for the competition on this round consist of live report.
a. Live Report
1) All the participants will get a short video from the projector. And the participants must
give reports about the phenomenon from the video to the judges.
2) The theme of the phenomenon will be given on the preliminary announcement.
3) The maximum time that will be given is 7 minutes. The committee will give a sign to start
the performance (green flag), the last 2 minutes (yellow flag), and at the end of the
duration (red flag). If the participant exceeds the specified time limit, the points will be
decreased 10 points per minute.

2. Physical Appearance
 Every participant must keep his/her appearance neat and clean; this includes hair neatness.

FINAL ROUND
1. Materials of the Competition
The materials for the competition on this round consist of talk show.
a. Talk show
1) There will be a talk show for the final. The participants have to interview a special guest
and discuss about a certain issue.
2) A short explanation about the special guest and the issue will also be given to the
participants of the final round after the announcement.
3) The maximum time that will be given is 10 minutes. The committee will give a sign to
start the performance (green flag), the last 2 minutes (yellow flag), and at the end of the
duration (red flag). If the participant exceeds the specified time limit, the points will be
decreased 10 points per minute.

2. Physical Appearance

SCORING ASPECTS
1. Assessment based on six criteria, which are accuracy, fluency, performance, intonation,
expression, and pronunciation.
2. Maximum score is 100 for each assessment criterion.
