8.1 IN SITU BORED PILE

8.1.1 Preparation of Bed
Activities of bored cast-in-situ piles shall be carried out on approximately leveled ground to facilitate
movement of the piling equipment. Bed shall be prepared by cutting or filling of land depending on
site conditions. The level of the bed shall be maintained at least 2.0 m above the ground water
level.Mud tank shall be made at construction site for collection and subsequently disposal of bored
soils.
8.1.2 Setting out
location of the piles shall be set out with respect to reference points, bench mark etc. established and
confirmed by the engineer before execution of works. Reference points and benchmarks will be
constructed and secured in such a way that they are not disturbed during execution of work. Location
of the piles shall be fixed by driving suitable length of peg (re-bar) into the soil. Top portion of re-bar
(approximately 150 mm) shall be surrounded by concrete protruding top of re-bar above concrete
level for easy identification. The peg shall be removed immediately before start of boring.
8.1.3 Boring
The boring shall be done by Percussion Drilling/ rotary drilling method. Piles through water and soft
upper soil layers shall be provided with permanent steel casing, if shown in the Drawings or as
directed by the Engineer. Temporary steel casing shall be used in the upper portion of boring piles as
a guide at the top of hole, where permanent casing is not shown in the drawing. Temporary casings
shall be free from significant distortion & shall have uniform cross-section throughout each
continuous length. Actual length of temporary casing pipe required to be used shall be determined
from the bore log or from the record of actual soil strata encountered during execution of boring
work. If necessary casing pipe shall be used ahead of the bore for preventing base heave and to
stabilize the side. Depending on soil conditions common drilling clay or Bentonite suspension shall
be used to stabilize bore hole. Bore shall be always filled in with water or drilling fluid up to the
ground level or at least 2m above water table to provide adequate hydrostatic head for the stability of
borehole. The suspension carrying bore cuttings shall be collected and shall be processed for
descending through sedimentation tank and drilling fluid shall be reused or disposed off depending on
degree of contamination. In the event of rapid loss of water or bentonite suspension from the pile
excavation the excavation shall be immediately backfilled with out delay and the engineer shall be
informed for his instruction.

Boring Record: During the boring of piles samples shall be collected and compared with the bore log
provided with the design. In case abnormal variation in respect to depth and type of soil is
encountered, the engineer shall be informed for his decision.
8.1.4 Drilling Fluid and uphole velocity
When a particle falls through a liquid, its fall is resisted by the shearing strength (viscosity) of the
liquid. Falling velocity of a particle through a liquid is inversely proportional to the viscosity,
therefore, importance of viscosity in governing the velocity is very clear.
The function of drilling fluid is essentially to remove the cutting from the bottom of the bore. Thus
the uphole velocity has to be somewhat greater than the falling velocity and increasing viscosity has
the effect of reducing the uphole velocity required to lift the particle. Depending on the particle size,
viscosity of fluid and uphole velocity will vary. We can achieve the viscosity of the fluid by mixing
different types of clays or betonite at different concentrations which may be measured at site by
Marsh cone.
8.1.5 Disposal of Bored Soil
Bore cutting materials shall be regularly removed from the sedimentation tank and disposed off to
suitable places out side the project area. Sediments collected at the bottom of sedimentation tank shall
be mixed with water and pumped in a truck mounted steel tank having a 4” dia outlet pipe at bottom
of the tank with gate valve to control the opening. Mud shall be disposed off in such a way that it
does not create any adverse impact on environmental issues or close natural waterways.
8.1.6 Cleaning Bottom of Excavation
The time gap between final excavation & bottom cleaning and start of concreting shall be kept as
minimum as possible. All arrangements for cleaning, lowering of reinforcement & concreting shall be
made ready before excavation of final 2m depth. Bore hole & bottom of excavation shall be cleaned
of mud & sedimentation & other soft materials by continuous washing or using bailer of suitable size
(at least 1.5” less than the casing). Sample of fluid shall be collected from the bottom of bore hole by
special device and sedimentation test shall be carried out. Specific gravity of suspension shall be kept
below 1.2 to ensure displacement of fluid and to avoid contamination of concrete during pouring of
concrete.
During boring of piles disturbed samples of soil from different strata shall be collected and a boring
log indicating depths and types of the various soil layers encountered shall be prepared for the
inspection of the Engineer.

If any unexpected ground conditions different from the test boring log is encountered, it shall be
immediately reported to the Engineer. Depth of boring shall be measured from the length of drilling
rod.
8.1.7 Placing of Reinforcement
Reinforcement shall be fabricated and installed in position as per the approved drawing.
Reinforcement will be fabricated in the form of a rigid cage with vertical main reinforcement at
periphery inside widely spaced helical ties. In addition to binding the vertical re-bars with ties by GI
wire, spot welding will be used. The cages will be fabricated in ± 12 meter length to facilitate
handling of the same. While lowering a piece of a reinforcement cage in the bore hole it will be held
against casing pipe with a portion the reinforcing cage protruding above casing for splicing with the
upper cage. Spacing of the cage shall be done by continuous welding of vertical reinforcement.
Immediately after cleaning of bore hole reinforcement shall be lowered carefully up to level shown in
the approved drawing in the form of rigid cage. Splicing of reinforcement shall be done by welding.
Sufficient support & arrangement shall be made to keep reinforcement in vertical position.

Fig: Installation of rebar cage by Crawler crane

8.1.8 Placing Of Concrete
The concrete used in the pile base and shaft shall be easily workable with a slump of 100-150mm.
Such a mix is self-compacting and does not require ramming or vibrating. Mix proportion shall be
such as to ensure compliance with the requirements regarding strength and minimum cement content
mentioned in the specification. Prior to commencement of piling works, mix design of concrete shall
be done which will not prone to segregation based on target strength which will be calculated by
adding approved margin to characteristic design strength mentioned in the specification. After placing
of reinforcement concrete shall be poured into bore hole using tremie pipe with hopper placed
centrally over the pile. The tremie pipe shall be lowered on the bottom of pile with arrangement of
suitable plug placed inside tremie at suspension level. Concrete shall be discharged into tremie
hopper until full and plug reaches the bottom. The tremie shall then lifted off the bottom slightly (50
– 100mm) allowing the concrete flow out of the pipe and full up the bore by displacing the
fluid/Bentonite suspension upwards. Concrete shall be poured directly from the transit mixer truck.
Pouring shall be done continuously. Bottom of the tremie pipe shall always be kept embedded in the

Project.

concrete to sufficient depth. To ensure this before removing a section of tremie pipe height of
concrete inside bore hole shall be measured by lowering suitable measuring device in the bore hole.
Pouring of concreting shall continue for some time after concrete reaches approximately 1 meter
above the pile cutoff level to allow displacement of sediments or contaminated concrete completely
and good concrete appears. During progress of concreting work temporary caging & tremie pipe shall
be gradually withdrawn carefully without damaging green concrete.

Fig: Pouring concrete by Transit mixer truck

8.1.9 Quality Control
Piling work shall be carried out using methods, tools and equipment suitable for the work by skilled
manpower under direct supervision of experienced supervisor.
Quality of materials shall be controlled by frequent field and laboratory test.
The casing shall be handled and stored in a manner that shall prevent buckling and other deformation
as well as accumulation of dirt, oil and paint.

The outside surface of the permanent casing of piles to river piers, for the depth indicated on the
Drawings from the underside of the pile cap shall receive two coats of anticorrosion tar type paint.
Before use of bentonite a certificate from the manufacturer shall be obtained showing the properties
of the consignment delivered to the site and approval of the same shall be taken from the Engineer.

Position of piles shall be checked with the reference points installed near the working area prior to
execution.
Verticality of bore holes shall be checked & controlled.
During boring with drilling fluid viscosity of the suspension shall be checked time to time using
Marsh Cone.
Density of the fluid inside borehole shall be checked and kept within limits to ensure displacement of
fluid and to avoid contamination of concrete during pouring of concrete.
Hydrostatic stability of the bore hole shall always be maintained.

Several types of defects are associated with the extraction of temporary casing. The problems are
mainly related to the workability and head of concrete placed within the steel casing prior to their
extraction. If low slump concrete is used or where the period of time between mixing the concrete
and extracting the casing is in excess of one to two hours when hardening of concrete may occur.
Frictional drag force between the casing and low slump concrete during extraction may of such
magnitude that concrete and reinforcement cage may be lifted and shaft separation may occur near
the bottom of the casing. If the reinforcement cage is securely embedded in the lower portion of the
concrete shaft, only concrete outside the cage is lifted. We shall take care of this problem by cleaning
the tubes before they are lowered down the hole and use of high workability concrete.
Piles shall not be bored close to recently concreted pile to avoid damage of the pile.

Fig: Slump test of concrete for checking workability

8.1.10 Unexpected Ground Conditions

We shall keep record of all activities for each pile in an approved record form. Recording of the soil
strata in the pile boreholes is an essential check on the site investigation data. Separate sheet shall be
used for individual piles. In the record sheet pile number, drilling time, obstruction encountered
during boring, pile reinforcement detail, concrete pouring time, depth of borehole, depth of casing,
depth of water table etc. shall be recorded and submitted for review of the Engineer.

8.1 11 Pile Load Test

In the specification document-maintained load (ML) test for compressive loading on working piles
has been recommended. In the maintained load test, the load is increased in stages to some multiple,
say 1.5 times or twice the working load with the time settlement curve recorded at each stage of
loading and unloading. The ML test may also be taken to failure by progressively increasing the load
in stages.

Construction of Kadamrasul bridge over the river Shitalakhya near Mir Akhter Hossain Ltd.
5No. Gudaraghat of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCCKB)
Project.

The load at each stage is held until the rate of settlement has decreased to less than 0.25mm/hour and
is still decreasing.
We shall conduct the ML test as per the pile load increments for loading as furnished in the
specification.
A square cap is cast on to the head of the concrete test pile with its underside clear of the ground
surface. We shall apply load to the pile by a hydraulic jack using Kentledge as reaction.
An arrangement for compressive test on pile using Kentledge has been shown in fig below.

Fig: Pile Static Load Test

The clearances between the pile and the reaction support systems shall be kept minimum 1.3 meter to
avoid the induced horizontal pressures from the supports.
The combined weight of the kentledge and reaction girder shall be at least 20% greater than the
Jacking force.
The hydraulic jack shall have a nominal capacity which exceeds by 20% or more the maximum test
load to be applied to the pile. This in necessary in order to avoid heavy manual pumping effort when
nearing maximum load and to minimize the risk of any leakage of oil through the seals. The ram of
the jack shall have a long travel to avoid the necessity of releasing oil pressure and repacking with
steel plates above the ramp as the pile is pushed into the ground. The kentledge stack shall be
arranged in such a way that it will topple over due to buckling of the reaction girders.

The jacking force on the pile shall be measured by a load cell or pressure capsule since the pressure
gauge fitted to most jacks is not sufficiently accurate, particularly when working towards the
maximum capacity of jack. The pumping unit shall have a calibrated pressure gauge mounted on it to
read in terms of the force of the ram.

The settlement of the pile head shall be measured by dial gauge set on each of four reference points
on the pile head. The dial gauges will be clamped to a datum frame securely mounted well clear of
the ground around the pile or the reaction support system. The gauges will be calibrated to read to
0.1mm. Level of the datum frames shall be taken before and after loading test to check that the
frame has not been displaced during the test.

5No. Gudaraghat of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCCKB)
Project.

All field load test data shall be recorded in an approved form. From the field data a load-time-
settlement curve shall be drawn on a graph paper and the report shall be prepared and submitted for
review of the Engineer.

8.1.12 Pile Driving Analyzer ( PDA ) Test

For bridges having more than one span , at least two ( 2 ) numbers of Dynamic Test ( PDA ) shall be
carried out using by a drop hammer of certain capacity in accordance with the instruction of the
Engineer. The test results shall verify the capacities for designed working load of the bored piles.

The Loading test shall be conducted with ASTM D4945-00 ( 1994). Detail method statement shall be
submitted to the Engineer for approval at least 45 days before testing. The method statement shall
include pile head preparation, cushion layer, type and capacity ( weight ) of hammer, method of
hammering ( drop from certain height ), equipment for installation ( rising and drop ) of hammer ( 45
ton capacity crawler crane ), digital apparatus for dynamic monitoring with calibration records etc.
A full comprehensive written report shall be submitted to the Engineer within 10 working days for
his approval. After the completion of loading test, all equipment and hammer used shall be removed
from the site.

8.1.13 Non destructive Pile Test

Before carrying out destructive pile static load test and dynamic test non destructive pile test like a )
Ultrasonic test and b ) Pile Integrity test ( PIT ) shall be performed as per instruction of the Engineer.

Each completed piles shall be subjected to non destructive testing to determine the extent of any
defects that may be present in the pile. PIT shall not be performed until the concrete has cured for a
minimum of seven days unless otherwise approved by the Engineer

10 Construction Procedure for The Construction of Precast Prestressed Girders

Depending on the site conditions PC girders shall be constructed either on a prepared bed on ground
at PC yard to be constructed at suitable place of available areas or close to the working place or in
situ on an elevated stage with in the span of the girders. In case of casting of PC girders at PC yard
the same shall be transported to the site by trailer and lifted and placed on bearing plates in its final
position. In case of casting of PC girder on stages the same shall be installed in its final position from
casting bed by side shifting. Before shifting of girders from the casting bed, post tensioning of
girders, patch concreting and grouting shall be completed. Detail procedure for construction of PC
girders shall be as follows.

10.1 Bed preparation

a) Construction of PC girder ( normally < 20.00 m length ) on ground level shall be done on a
casting bed made of bricks and cement concrete prepared on a level ground. During
construction of casting bed provision shall be kept to fix the bottom shutter with the bed by
spot welding with the anchors. The space between the beds shall be kept equal to minimum
height of girder plus 600mm for movement of workers. A typical plan and sketch of casting
bed arrangement has been shown in fig attached at the end of this method statement.

b) In case of construction of girders ( normally length > 20.00 m ) final height within span, a
rigid working platform on pipe scaffolding using joists, steel platform timbers etc. shall be
constructed at a level close to. At least two numbers of bed shall be constructed on each
platform. Width of platform for 30 meter girders shall be approximately 7.8 meter for two
beds. Alignment of the casting beds will be selected at center of final positions of two girders
to facilitate stressing of girders. The pipe supports will be properly braced and made safe
against anticipated loads. Re-bar placing & binding, cleaning & fixing of form work,
installation of pre-stressing materials, casting of girder, pre-stressing and operation for
shifting of girder shall be carried out on the platform.

Fig: Staging & platform for PC Girder

10.2 Form work

Steel form fabricated according to dimension of the girder shall be used for concreting of PC
girders. Steel form shall be fabricated using 3.0mm thick ms plate, ms angle frame and sufficient nos.
of flat bar stiffener to attain good surface finishing in length of maximum 2.4 meter for easy handling.
The inner face of the end shutters will be fabricated in such a way that the anchorage assembly sits
properly with the end shutter and remain aligned with the direction of the axes of the tendons at the
point of attachment. Two to three sets of bottom shutter & one set of side shutter will be used with in
one span for casting of PC girders. Provision for fixing of form vibrator shall be kept in the side
forms at certain intervals. Bottom shutter shall be fixed with the steel joist by spot welding to avoid
displacement of girder form work during concrete casting. Joints between the different shutter pieces
shall be made leak proof by using gasket between the joints. Two ends of the bottom shutter
( abutment portion) shall be fabricated with separate piece of approximately 600mm width. This
portion will be supported by wooden wedges to facilitate removal of the same before stressing of
girder. The form work shall be supported with required number of adjustable supports and tie rod
from one side, while the other side shall be kept free for easy movement of working people as shown
in the attached sketch.

10.3 Placing of Pre-stressing Materials

After placing & binding of girder reinforcements, end shutters and one side shutter shall be erected
and ducts shall be placed in position according to alignment and cable profile shown in the approved
drawing. The ducts shall be secured in position by binding the same with girder reinforcement and
suspenders at close intervals. Joint of ducts shall be made using couplers of minimum 150mm length
made of 3mm higher diameter sheathing pipe . Anchorage will be positioned and secured in such a
way, so that the centre line of the ducts passes axially through the anchorage assembly duct.
Anchorage will be fitted with the end shutter by J hooks. Care shall be taken to ensure water tight
joints between anchorage and duct and joints of ducts. Required end block reinforcement shall be
placed on each side of the tendon at the anchorage to take care of the tensioning bursting force as per
detail shown on shop drawing. Cables shall be threaded into the sheathing pipe before pouring of
concrete. During threading of cable through the sheathing a blunted cap shall be fitted on the head of
thread as a precaution against damage of sheathing pipe wall by the sharp end of strands. Cables shall
be extended beyond both ends of the girder up to required distance for gripping of the same by
tensioning Jack. To facilitate lifting and sheathing of girders after stressing, provision shall be kept
for fixing lifting attachment near the supporting point of the girder during form work. After
inspection and approval of girder reinforcement, placement of sheathing pipes, anchorage, etc., the
side shutter of the other side will be placed and completed. Form release agent shall be applied on the

inside of the steel forms to prevent bond between the form and the concrete cast in it. Sufficient side
supports will be provided to keep the formwork aligned during concrete pouring.

Fig: Placing duct pipe & formwork of PC Girder

10.4 Concreting
Mix proportion of different concrete ingredients shall be determined through mix design and trail
mixes to achieve required strength and workability. Slump of concrete shall be maintained at
approximately 100mm. Mix design shall be done considering use of plasticizers to minimize water
cement ratio and achieving desired workability.
During pouring of concrete both form Vibrator and immersion type Vibrator will be used. Special
care shall be taken to ensure proper compaction and elimination of void/accumulation of air bubble
near end block and just behind anchorages. Care shall be taken to avoid damage and displacement of
duct during pouring of concrete. Tendons inside the duct shall be pulled to and fro during pouring of
concrete and for several hours after concrete casting and also in the next day of pouring of concrete to
keep the tendons free and unbonded in the duct from accidental ingress of mortar inside the sheathing
and to prevent setting of ingressed mortar, if any. 6-9 nos. of concrete cylinder shall be prepared as
representative sample of each girder concrete.
When pre-stressing operations will be planned to be carried out within the spans with abutment at one
end or both ends, concreting of the abutment wall above girder support level shall be completed after
completion of prestressing operations.

10.5 Post-Tensioning
All post tensioning steel shall be tensioned by means of hydraulic jacks so that the force of the
prestressing steel shall not be less than the value shown on the approved installation drawings. Before
post tensioning operation approval of the tensioning methods, calculations for required applied force,

expected elongations, sequence of stressing of tendons etc. will be taken. The maximum temporary
tensile stress ( jacking stress) in prestressing steel shall not exceed 80% of the minimum ultimate
tensile strength of the prestressing steel. The prestressing steel shall be anchored in a way that will
result in the ultimate retention of permanent forces, not less than those shown on the approved
installation drawings, but in no case shall the initial stress at the anchors, after anchor set, exceed 70
percent of the specified minimum ultimate tensile strength of the prestressing steel. Permanent force
and permanent stress will be considered as the force and stress remaining in the prestressing steel
after all losses, including creep and shrinkage of concrete, elastic shortening of concrete, relaxation of
steel, losses in post-tensioned prestressing steel due to sequence of stressing, friction and anchorage
slippage.
Each jack used to stress tendons shall be equipped with a pressure gauge for determining the jack
pressure or jack force.

Fig: Post Tensioning Arrangement

10.6 Calibration
Prior to use for stressing on the project, each jack and its gauge shall be calibrated as a unit by a
testing laboratory approved by the Engineer. Certified calibration calculations and a calibration chart
shall be furnished to the Engineer/inspector for each jack. Recalibration of each jack shall be done at
six-month intervals and at other times requested by the Engineer/Inspector
After curing for at least 7 days, when the girder shall attain minimum cylinder strength of 4000 psi.
which will be confirmed by crushing of test specimen taken during pouring of concrete, the pre-
stressing tendons shall be tensioned.
Straight cables shall be tensioned from one end while curved cables shall be tensioned from both the
ends as per technical specification. The tendon force measured by gauge pressure shall agree within
5% of the theoretical elongation or the entire operation shall be checked and source of error shall be
determined and remedied to the satisfaction of the Engineer/Inspector before proceeding the work.
Elongation shall be measured to the nearest millimeter. If the elongation is less than the anticipated
elongation over 3% of the anticipated elongation, the cables shall be stressed by slight force to
overcome additional friction force.
In the event of more than 2% of the individual strand wires in a tendon break during the tensioning
operation, the strand (strands) shall be removed and replaced

Project.

The cables shall be stressed in sequences listed to minimize the eccentric stressing and to avoid
bending of girder under eccentric load.
Following tools/equipment will be used for post tensioning of girders :-
1. Multiple pre-stressing Jack = 2 nos.
2. Electrically operated Hydraulic Power Pack = 2 nos.
3. Pressure gauge = 2 nos.
4. Chain pulley = 2 sets

10.7 Recording elongation

The cables shall be initially pulled by 50 KN force to eliminate slag, if any. Then chalk mark shall be
given on the cable at a distance of say 200mm at both ends measured from the face of the girder.
Measurement of elongation shall be taken from both ends for every 50KN increment of Jacking force.
In case of two ends stressing of cable, both ends shall be pulled with equal force. In case of stressing
cable from one end, the cable on the opposite end of the jacking end shall be blocked by pushing the
wedges in the bearing plates/anchorage cones. Elongation of cable at every increment of 50KN force
shall be recorded and plotted in a graph paper. From the extension of plotted line corrected elongation
of cable due to initial 50KN force shall be calculated. Measurement of anchorage losses shall be
taken accurately to determine the losses due to anchorage slippage.

10.8 Grouting
After post-tensioning and anchoring has been completed and accepted, the duct shall be grouted as
per specification. In the interval between post-tensioning and grouting operations , the prestressing
steel shall be protected. After stressing of cables the girder shall be left undisturbed for one day. In
the following day the reference point shall be measured. If no appreciable change in slippage of
tendon is noticed the extended portion of the tendons shall be cut and patch concreting of the end
shall be done.
Grouting shall be carried out on the following day of patch concrete. Before grouting cable shall be
cleaned by flash water through the duct under pressure. Grout shall be prepared by mixing following
materials in the proportion recommended by the manufacturer by grout agitator.
1. Ordinary Portland Cement
2. Potable water
3. Expanding grout admixture.
The grout shall be forced inside the duct from one end using grout pump. Grout shall be pumped
through the holes of anchorage assembly . When thick grout starts to come through the centre holes
of anchorage on the other end the hole on the other end shall be plugged and Grouting shall continue
until sufficient grout pressure is developed inside the duct and the grouting end shall be plugged.
Following tools/equipment will be used for grouting of girders :-
1. Grout pump
2. Grout agitator.

10.9 Lifting and Shifting of Girders

After 24 hours of grouting work, the girder shall be side shifted to its final position with the help of
Hydraulic jack, shifting channel, shifting bracket etc as has been detailed in the attached sheet and
shall be placed on the elastomeric bearing already placed in position. At first the girder shall be lifted
from one end with the help of a pair of hydraulic jack of adequate capacity and the shifting channel
shall be placed under the girder. The girder then shall be lowered on a wooden block placed inside the
channel. Similarly the other end of the girder shall be lifted and placed on the wooden block. Inside
face of the channel and wooden blocks will be greased prior to placing of the same in position. Next
the shifting brackets will be fitted with the shifting channel and the girder shall be pushed gently
from each end simultaneously by hydraulic jacks. The girder will move together with the wooden
block inside the channel. When the inner shaft of the jack is fully opened the jacks shall be removed
and the shifting brackets will be fixed with the new hole position closer to the girder. Next the jacks
will be placed in between girder and shifting bracket and the girder be will pushed similarly from
both ends. When the girder will reach to its final position, the girder shall be lifted from one end by
hydraulic jack and the bottom channel shall be removed. Next the bearing pad shall be placed in
position and the girder shall be lowered on the bearing pad. Following tools shall be used for lifting
and shifting of girders:-
MS channel of required length. = 2 nos.
Hydraulic Jack for lifting and shifting of girder = 2 nos.
( minimum 20 ton capacity)
Shifting Bracket = 2 nos.
Lifting Bracket = 2 nos.
After placing all the girder in its final position the diaphragm beams , deck slab, railing etc shall be
completed.

10.10 Construction Method RC deck Slab

Method of construction of concrete shall conform to S5.03.(1 ) of the Specification. Formwork for
deck slab shall be fastened with the PC girder by providing angle the girder top side fixed with bolt to
the previous inserted nuts for the purpose of the same. Special suspended scaffold arrangement shall
be required at cantilever portion that also would be fastened with the outer side PC girder.
Concrete shall be handled, placed and consolidated by methods that will not cause segregation of the
mix and will result in a dense homogeneous concrete which is free of voids and rock pocket.
During and after placement of concrete, care shall be taken not to injure the concrete or break the
bond with reinforcing steel. Workmen shall not walk in fresh concrete . Platforms for workmen and
equipment shall not be supported directly on any reinforcing steel. Once the concrete is set , forces
shall not be applied to the forms or to reinforcing bars , which project from the concrete, until the
concrete is of sufficient strength to resist damage.
Construction joints and expansion joint shall conform to the requirements of S5.03.(1) of the
specification.
All bridge decks, approach slab and other concrete surfaces for use by traffic shall be finished to a
smooth skid- resistant surface.

10.11 Concrete slope protection

Slope shall be shaped to allow the full thickness of the specified slope protection and any bedding or
filter gravel, where required.

Prior to excavation or filling in slopes, the existing slope surface either above or under water level
shall be surveyed and checked. The slope surface shall be leveled and compacted by using plate
compactor.
Filter fabric non oven geo-textile shall be spread uniformly over the prepared slope or surface.
Minimum 12” filter fabric lap in each direction should be provided.
Riprap with concrete precast block shall be placed over the filter.
Toe wall shall be provided by concrete block to resist sliding of riprap block on the slope surface.

10.12 Scouring Protection at Pier Base

Revetment works near pier surround shall consist of laying cast-in-situ CC blocks at least 200 mm
below river bed level within segmental formwork so that no revetment works shall be exposed to
river water. Plan area of each segment is 1000 mm x 1000 mm. Total revetment area shall be clearly
indicated on the shop drawing.
