QUESTION 1_SEPT 2015

Figure Q1 shows a simply supported S275 steel beam, section UKB 406 x 140 x 39 kg/m that is
subjected to unfactored uniformly distributed load,UDL of gk=8kN/m and qk=6kN/m along the
span. Meanwhile, a point load acting at the middle of the beam with Gk=5kN and Qk=4kN. The
beam is classified as class 1 and adequate to moment resistance.

a) Define laterally restrained beam.

b) Determine the shear resistance of beam. Check the adequacy of the provided beam
section.

QUESTION 2_OCT 2016

Figure Q2 shows a floor plan of a building. The floor has to resist a permanent (including self
weight ) and variable action of 9 and 5 kN/m2 respectively. The proposed section for beam A-B/1
is UKB 254X146X37. The beam is pin supported at one end and roller supported at the other
end. Assume that the steel beam is fully laterally restrained and from class 1, determine the
suitability of the beam to resist bending moment and shear force.

QUESTION 3_MAR 2016

A 356 x 127 x 39 UKB grade S275 are supported by two columns which provide a clear span of
6 m. 200mm bearings are placed between the members as shown in Figure Q3. Determine
whether the beam can sustain the 15 kN/m design action against web buckling.

QUESTION 4_MAR 2017

A hot rolled I- beam section is fully restrained along its length of 8m. This beam of section 457 x
152 x 52 UKB grade S275 steel is loaded with uniformly distributed permanent action (including
beam self weight) and variable action of 10kN/m and 5kN/m respectively. The beam is classified
to be Class 1 section.

a) Determine the adequacy of shear resistance and moment resistance of the beam.

b) Due to amendments made in architectural drawing, a secondary beam needs to be placed
at the center of the beam length. The factored reaction from the secondary beam is
77.5kN. Evaluate the deflection of the beam with presence of the new load.
