Machine Controls
Parking Brake

Parking Brake - Raising this lever engages the parking brake which will prevent the machine
from rolling forward or backward. Always stop the engine and engage the parking brake before
leaving the machine.

Parking Brake Engaged - Move the lever up to engage the parking brake and prevent machine
movement. Parking brake indicator light on front dash will come on with start key on and parking
brake engaged.

Parking Brake Released - Move the lever down to release the parking brake. Raise lever slightly
and push button in before releasing the parking brake. The machine can now roll freely if
transmission is in neutral.

Brake Pedals

Personal injury or death can result if brake pedal lock bar is not
engaged when recommended.

Machine can swerve out of control if only one brake is applied for a
quick stop.

Follow the recommendations below for proper braking. When roading,

have the brake pedal lock bar engaged.

Brake Pedals - Push down on both pedals to slow or stop the machine. Use the brakes on a
downgrade to keep the engine from overspeeding.

Rear stop lights should come on when applying brakes. Repair if not functioning before operating
machine.

Connect the left and right pedals together as shown above by moving the lock bar between both
pedals. Connect the lock bar when using the machine in second (2), third (3) or fourth (4) gear
speeds.

If pedal travel increases, pedal efforts decrease or stopping distance increases, do not operate the
machine until the cause has been corrected.

NOTE: Some noise while braking is normal. If excessive after 100 hours of brake operation, drain
the axle fluid. Refill with approved axle fluid and 251403 Ford additive. Refer to the topic Rear
Axle, under the heading "Every 1000 Service Hours or 6 Months", in the Maintenance Interval
section of this manual for the correct procedure to change the fluid.

Disengage the lock bar as shown above for first (1) speed only. Use the left or right pedal to aid in
maneuvering in tight quarters.

Use the pedals along with the steering wheel to make sharp turns. Push the left pedal to help make
a sharp left turn. Push the right pedal to help make a sharp right turn.

Speed Controls

Accelerator Pedal - Push down on the pedal to change the engine speed. Release the pedal and
the engine speed will return to the low idle accelerator lever setting.

Use the pedal to reduce engine rpm when making directional shifts when using loader.

Typical example

Accelerator Lever - Controls the engine speed for backhoe operation.

Operate machine in the green operating range on tachometer.

High Engine Speed - Move the lever to this position (1) for faster engine rpm.

Low Idle Speed - Move the lever to this position (2) for slower engine rpm.

For roading or loader operation, keep lever in low idle position. Use accelerator pedal to change
engine speed.

Transmission Controls

Transmission Speed Shift Lever - Move the lever (1) to one of the four desired travel speeds
after pushing neutral button (2). Shifts between any gear speed can be made while machine is
moving.

Move transmission speed lever as per shift pattern on the machine.

Speed changes while moving and at full engine speed are possible. However, for operator comfort
and maximum service life of power train components, decelerating and/or braking, when changing
speeds is recommended.

Neutral Control Button - Push the button (2) in when changing speed ranges. This will
disengage the transmission from the driving wheels.

Push the button when all available engine power is desired for the loader hydraulics.

Forward, Neutral, Reverse Directional Control Lever - Move the lever to the desired direction.
Move the lever to position (1) to travel forward and position (3) to travel in reverse. Move the
lever to position (2) for neutral.

Forward-Reverse directional changes while moving is possible. However, for operator comfort
and maximum service life of power train components, reducing engine and machine ground speed
and/or braking, when changing directions is recommended.

Machine should be stopped with a raised load to avoid having unstable machine.

Transmission Neutral Lock - Move the directional control lever to NEUTRAL (2). Install the
neutral lock (4) over the lever. This prevents the lever from being moved out of NEUTRAL.

NOTE: When leaving the machine install the transmission neutral lock over the transmission
lever to lock the lever into the neutral position.

Engage the parking brake to prevent machine movement when the transmission is in neutral.

Differential Lock

Differential Lock Pedal - Push the pedal down to engage the differential lock. This will help
prevent wheel slippage. Use it when moving on soft or wet ground. Apply when wheel is slipping
to ensure positive engagement. Reduce engine speed to idle before engaging to minimize shock
loads on rear axle.

The differential will automatically disengage when torque allows.

Use the differential lock to prevent one wheel from slipping. If the wheels continue to slip in soft
material, reduce the engine speed.

When differential pedal is depressed, the differential is locked and both rear wheels turn at the
same speed.

NOTE: AWS Machines are not equipped with differential lock.

Front Powered Drive Wheels

Front Powered Drive Wheels 4-WD - Move the switch forward to engage wheels. Move switch
back to disengage.

All Wheel Steer Modes (Attachment)

The all wheel steer (AWS) attachment has two steering modes and a rear wheel positioning mode.
When operating the machine for the first time, become familiar with the three modes by trying
each one. This should be done in an area clear of personnel and obstructions.

Personal injury or death can result if the machine is roaded in any

mode other than front wheel steer.

Always road the machine with rear wheels centered and the machine in
the front wheel steer mode.

Steering Mode Switch (1).

Rear Wheel Position Gauge (2).

Before changing from one steering mode to another, always center

both the front and rear wheels.

Roading and Normal Driving Mode - Place the steering mode toggle switch in the center
position (3). In this mode, the steering will function in the normal manner. Turn the steering wheel
in the direction that you want to go.

Circle Steer Mode - This mode is used when a tighter turning radius is desired. Set the front
wheels and rear in their straight position, then pull up on the steering mode toggle switch and push
to the left position (4). The machine will turn in the direction that the steering wheel is turned.

Positioning Mode - This mode is used when working in confined areas or performing grading or
filling operations. With the steering mode toggle switch in the front wheel steer position (3) and
the steering turned straight ahead, pull up on the steering mode toggle switch up and push to the
right position (5). In this mode the rear wheels can be positioned independently of the front.

The rear wheels are positioned by the rear wheel position switch (6) located on the loader control.

Pull the wheel position switch (6) to the right and the wheels will move the back of the machine to
the left, when the machine is moving in a forward direction.

the right, when the machine is moving in a forward direction.

Positioning the front and back wheels in opposite directions, a very tight corner can be
maneuvered.

Positioning the front and back wheels in the same direction, the machine will crab steer.

Before returning to front wheel steer mode or circle steer mode, the front and rear wheels must be
centered. The rear wheels are centered by using the rear wheel position switch (6) and watching
the rear wheel position gauge (2) on the dash until the zero position is obtained. Then move the
steering mode selector switch to the desired mode.
