1.5 HUMANS AND POLLUTION
POLLUTION IS THE ADDITION OF A
SUBSTANCE OR AN AGENT TO
THE ENVIRONMENT BY HUMAN
ACTIVITY, AT A RATE GREATER
THAN THAT AT WHICH IT CAN BE
RENDERED HARMLESS BY THE
ENVIRONMENT AND WHICH HAS
AN APPRICIABLE EFFECT ON THE
ORGANISMS WITHIN IT
POLLUTANTS

-The substances released into the environment due to natural or human


activity which adversely affects the environment are called pollutants.
-In simple words we can say that a pollutant is a material that causes
pollution.
-Pollutants may be in the form of organic/ inorganic substances, light, sound
or heat energy, or biological agents.

-FOR EXAMPLE -
Carbon monoxide (CO)
Sulphur dioxide (SO2)
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
