Electric Current and its Effects: Magnetic

Effect

Topic: Questions discussed in class

1. When the current is switched on through a wire, a compass needle kept nearby
gets deflected from its north-south position. Explain.
When an electric current passes through a conductor, it behaves like a magnet.

When a compass needle, which is a tiny bar magnet, is kept close to the wire,
both the compass and the current-carrying wire (magnet) interact with one
another, and the compass needle gets deflected.

2. If the direction of electric current is reversed, then the deflection of the

magnetic needle:

A. Remains unchanged

B. Is reversed

C. Increases in same direction

D. Decreases in same direction

If the direction of the current is reversed, the deflection of the
compass needle is also reversed.

3. Do you think an electromagnet can be used for separating plastic bags from a
garbage heap? Explain.
No, an electromagnet cannot be used for separating plastic bags from a
garbage heap.

This is because an electromagnet would only attract magnetic materials

(materials which are attracted by a magnet), and plastic bags are non-magnetic
materials.

4. Which of the following conditions will reverse the poles of the electromagnet?

A. Adding one more cell

B. Removing one cell

C. Removing both cells

D. Changing the direction of the current in the coil.
The poles of an electromagnet can be changed by reversing the
flow of electricity.
