Word Processing

 used “word processing” as a more precised term for typing
 IBM redefined it “to describe electronic ways of handling a standard set of office activities –
composing, revising, printing, and filing written documents”

Word Processor

 Software application used to produce, create, edit and format a document and store it
electronically on a disk, display it on a screen, modify it by entering commands and characters
from the keyboard, and print it on a printer.
 Used for writing letters, memos, reports, creating letterheads, mail merging.

Functions of Word Processors

 Creating, editing, saving, and printing documents.


 Copying, pasting, moving, and deleting text within a document.
 Formatting text, such as font type, bolding, underlining, or italicizing.
 Creating, editing tables

View Shortcuts

 Allow you to change the way you view your document on the screen.

Task Bar

 Shows open programs

Zoom Slide

 Allows you to increase/decrease the amount of the document you see on the screen

View Ruler Button

 Allow you to view/hide rulers

Screen Split Button

 Lets you split your screen in two when double-clicked

Scroll Bars

 Allows you to view entire workbook by moving it up, down, left, right

Right Indent

 Slide this triangle to the left of the margin to limit the right side of a paragraph to that point.
Move the triangle to the right of the margin to allow the right side of the paragraph to extend.

Group

 Command buttons with a common purpose are clustered together.

Quick Launch Bar/Dialogue Box Launcher

 Arrow in the bottom right hand corner of some groups


 Will bring up a dialog box where additional options/changes can be entered

Title Bar

 Shows name of program and open document


 Contains minimize, maximize, close buttons

Quick Access to Toolbar

 Allows you to add frequently used commands

Tab

 Broken down into 7 tabs


 Each tab has a common purpose and consists of several groups

First Line Indent

 Controls where the first line of the paragraph begins

Hanging Indent

 Opposite of the first line indent
