Average Velocity and Instantaneous Velocity

Dear students
 Read and solve activity 3 page 36.
 Read and solve activity 4 page 36.

Conclusion: The table shows the comparison between average

velocity (speed) and
instantaneous velocity (speed).
Remark: At this level (for grade 8), speed stands for velocity. (The direction is not
considered)
Average Speed Instantaneous Speed
The average speed of a moving body is The instantaneous speed is the speed of a

unit of time.
Example: In order to find at what speed a Example: At each instant of the trip, the
runner covers a given distance, the car has a different speed.
average speed should be calculated.
Zero at the beginning of the trip and it
increases as it goes along.
Average speed is calculated by the The instantaneous speed is measured by

Units

Units of speed
 The (SI) unit of distance (d) is the meter (m).
 The (SI) unit of duration (t) is the second (s).
Then:
 The (SI) unit of speed (v) is (m/s).
 If the distance is expressed in (km) and the duration in hour (h), then
the unit of speed is km/h.
Note: 1 km = 1000 m (m: meter) (km: kilometer)

÷ 3.6
km/h m/s

Exercises

Solved Exercise 1 :
A swimming pool is 25m long. A swimmer covers it to and from in 50 seconds.
Calculate the average speed of the swimmer.
Solution: the distance (d) = 25m the duration (t) = 50 s velocity (v) = ?
𝑑 25𝑚
Apply v = = = 0.5m/s
𝑡 50 𝑠

Solved Exercise 2:
A turtle takes 13 minutes 20 seconds to cover a distance of 200 m from place A to
place B.
1- Calculate in m/s the average speed of the turtle.
2- Suppose that the turtle started to move from point A at 3:27:12 PM.
At what instant does it reach place B?

Solution:
3
1- t = 13 min + 20 s = (13×60) s + 20 s = 800 s distance d = 200m v = ?
𝑑 200 𝑚
v= = = 0.25 m/s
𝑡 800 𝑠
2- The turtle reaches place B at the instant : 3:27:12 + 13min 20s = 3:40:32 PM.

Solved Exercise 3:
A bullet is ejected from a pistol at an average speed of 800 m/s.
1- Calculate the distance covered by the bullet during 1.5 seconds.
2- Calculate the time elapsed between ejecting the bullet and hitting a wall which
is 500 m away from the pistol.
Solution:
Velocity v = 800 m/s duration (t) = 1.5 s d = ?
1- Apply d = v × t = 800 m/s × 1.5 s = 1200 m.
2- Now distance (d) = 500m and t = ?
𝑑 𝟓𝟎𝟎 𝒎
Apply t = = = 0.625 s
𝑣 𝟖𝟎𝟎 𝒎/𝒔
