Year and Section: __________________________ Date: ______________
Solve the following: Express your answers to three decimal places.

1. How much is the change in the internal energy of a system if 6,000 BTU of heat is
added to the system and 4,600 BTU of work is done on the system?

2. How much is the change in the internal energy of a system if 3,500 J of heat leaves
the system while 2,400 J of work is done on the system?

3. A gas initially 0.12 m3 is compressed to 0.08 m3 at a constant pressure of 2.4 atm.

The internal energy of the gas decreases by 1.3 atm. Find the work done by the gas.
Find the value of heat Q of the heat flow into or out of the gas.

4. A gas exerts a steady pressure of 385 KPa on the top of a piston as the piston
moves through a stroke of 8 cm. If the diameter of the piston is 5 cm, how much work
is done by the gas?

5. In a closed system, the absolute pressure of a gas remains constant at 50 KPa while
its volume changed from 20 cm3 to 50 cm3. Compute for the work. Was the work done
by the system or on the system?
