ea INTRODUCTION this cost-effective general purpose diagnostic generator is especially suited for use in clinics, private offices and smaller hospitals - anywhere compact, yet comprehensive design and versatile operation are called for. Compatible vith 2 variety of x-ray tube units, this generator is certified to comply with DH=W regulations! DESCRIPTION This generator is comprised of two units: @ Control Console and @ High Tension Transforner Control Console The free-standing Control Console contains the x-ray power control and all operator controls, eluded in the power control are the high ten- sion prinary power supply, filament power supply, nA load compensator, stator supply, exposure timer and control circuitry, primary contacting system, and overload protection. The primary power supply includes a power line circuit breaker which controls incoming line power and responds to primary and secondary overload conditions. A single rotary switch on the operator control panel provides for KV selec- tion and line compensation; a HI/LO range switch doubles the number of KV positions available to the operator. The Filament power supply includes a magnetic-type constant voltage stabilizer, indi- vidual adjustments for each mA station on large and small "master" resistors, and independent space charge adjustment for each mA station. The stator supply includes a contactor controlled by @ rotor boost time delay, an oil-filled phase shifting capacitor, and current sensing relays in each leg. The time delay is adjustable at instal- lation Co accommodate different anode weights. The exposure timer features solid state impulse ciming from 1/120 to 6 seconds. An electronic ‘memory circuit determines the proper polarity of the starting pulse for an exposure based on TECHNICAL MANUAL the polarity of the previously terminated expo- sure. SCR contacting is employed for applying primary power to the High Tension Transforner. Unlike mechanical contactors, SCR's provide transient-free switching. Werload protection 1s provided by te circuit breaker that responds to excessive curr in the x-ray tube or the power line, Power © Ei reise erenafoalircens toca tien or high tension cables ALL operator controls and indicators are located fon the sloped control panel at the top of the Control Console. Variable controls are provided for the operator selection of mi, TIME, and KV, while pushbuttons control the PREP and EXPOSURE functions. A MODE switch is also provided for Selection of one of two Buckys. A large scale MA meter indicates actual tube current during the exposure, and a pre-reading KV meter provides en indication of selected KV. The renovable rear panel of the Control Console permits easy access to all components, The SCR contactor assembly is a readily replaceable module. To facilitate servicing, connection points to all components are easily accessible, High Tension Transformer The heavy duty of1-filled transformer assembly is in two sections, The lover section contains the 600 mA capacity high tension transformer, @ com- pact, shell type unit with a stepped core and mul~ tiple coil pancake primary design. The upper sec- tion of the transformer assembly contains four silleon diode assenblies rated at 150 kVp which provide s full-wave rectified output, separate high capacity filament transformers for large and small focal spots and Federal Standards high volt- age terminals, Connection of the upper and lover sections is made by spring contacts at the top of the high voltage coils. INSTALLATION 1 Preliminary Considerations In planning an efficient room layout, considera tion must be given to several factors: ‘¢ location and space requirements of generator components; @ location of auxiliary equipment (x-ray tal tubestand, upright Bucky stand, cassette holders, etc.); # source and location of input powers © power line capacit; @ wiring and conduits necessary for specific system configuration, including accessories; @ floor loading of major components; @ heat dissipation; @ state and local codes concerning radiation shielding requirenents; @ renoval of panels and covers for service. In some installations it may be possible to rount the High Tension Transformer inside the table base, Refer to OUTLINE DATA for dimensions. En- sure that such an installation will not lead to difficulties in routing required cables, including high voltage cables. 2-2 Power Requirements This unit will be operable requirements when © power line regulation maximum load. (300 mA © unloaded line voltage is within 10% of the value set at the tine of calibration. If circumstances require operation outside these Limits, the unit may, in many instences, function satisfactorily; however, it is the assenbler's responsibility to ensure that such operation does not result in non-compliance. in compliance with DHEW 4s 10% or better at and 125 kVp) Note: Following completion of the entire cali bration procedure, the generator techni- que factors will be within specified accuracies 1f line regulation is 10% or better. If line regulation ie worse than 8%, operation of the filament cir- cuit may be more stable if C2 is changed from 2 uF (Machlett Part No. P=754783-2; to 3 uF (P-754783-1) 2-3 Pre-Installation Wiring (refer to CABLING DATA) Line Power Refer to the power line specifications in Table 1. The line wires from the disconnect box to the Control Console should be of suffi~ cient size (awg) for the length of the run; use stranded copper wire. Ensure that the ewLtch and fuse rating in the disconnect box are of the appropriate rating for the intended naxiaun load. Control Console The wires provided for interconnection between the Control Console and HT Transformer are 35 €t [10.7 m] in length. If it is necessary to further separate the two units, conventional primary and ground wires should be used (#8 avg minimum); use #16 avg stator wire for the fila~ ment-stator leads, if codes permit. High Tension Transformer Cables from the HT Transformer to the x-ray tube include the high voltage anode and cath ode cables, and the stator (or stator/thermo- stat) cable. Normally these cables are draped on the tubestand then run directly to the HT ‘Transformer. Ensure that the cables are pro tected from mechanical abuse. Tf the 300 mA KV error in step 7 ie positive, resistor R52 must be increased by 1.7 kM per KV of error. Simtlarly, if the kV error is a negative, R52 must be decreased by 1.7 kN per kV of error. In the example shown in Figure 2-6 (b), the 300 mA kV error is 6.4 - 1.4 kV = 4 5.0 kV. Therefore, R52 must be increased by 8.5 ki (5.0 kV x 1.7 KORY), 9. To provide kV Calibration for the renaining MA stetions, it is necessary to make expo- sures at the five kV levels used previously, determine the kV error at each kV, and plot these points as before, Once RI has been adjusted in step 6, no further adjustment of this resistor should be required. Work- sheets and blank graphs are provided for the b. rensining mA stations. Adjust R52 thru R56 as required using the procedure described in steps 7 and 8. Additional checkout The following tests should be performed to con Firm compliance with DHEW regulations !: 1, Verify that EXPOSURE lamp lights during exposure. (Lamp may not light to full bright- ness on 1/120 and 1/60 second exposures.) 2. Verify that audible exposure elerm func- tions during exposure. (Sound may be inaudible on 1/120 and 1/60 second exposures. ) 3. Verify thet exposure terminates if EXPOSURE awiteh is released prior to end of selected exposure tine. 4, Verify that WARNING lebel is visible and readable on operator control panel. 5. Verify that CAUTION label 1s visibie and readable on top of RT Transformer. The assembler must complete the compliance check list attached. 15 2-8 Statement of Maximum Deviation Maximum Deviation from Control Settings Tt ts the intent of the manufacturer to cali- brate the generator as close as practice! to the indiceted settings displayed on the Con~ trol Console. CHARGE COMPENSATION ED-992207 4-1 FUNCTIONAL BLOCK DIAGRAM (See Figure 4-1) When the "Power" switch/circuit breaker (CB101) is thrown, line voltage is applied to the auto transformer, TR1. A portion of the secondary voltage ts tapped off through a awitch which selects either the full secondary voltage (for high kVp range operation) or the secondary, voltage minus 104 volts (for low kVp range operation). A second tap provides 120 volts for the constant voltage transformer, TR2, and the Bucky selector switches, $105 and $106, while another paix of taps supplies stator start and run voltages which are routed through the rotor control circuit, ‘The KV selector switch, S101, selects taps on tne autotransformer ranging from 177 VAC to 275 VAC (Zor operation in the high range; for low range operation the voltage reaching the primary of the High Tension transformer varies between 73 and 171 vac.) The voltage selected is applied to the filament compensation circuit, the primary SCR contactor Cireuit and the kVp calfbration circuit. The filanent primary circuit consists of the space charge conpensation transformer (TR3), the mA select switch, a space charge compensation resistor, R2, a filament boost resistor, R4, and “aster” resistors, R3 and R5, for both large and small filaments, The output of the constant voltage transforner, TR2, is applied to this circuit. The primary SCR contactor circuit consists of two SCRs (201 and 202), which control the ex- posure duration, a resistor, RI, which limits the current in the event of a high voltage arc, and a back-up contactor, K5, which provides a positive mechanical means to block exposures fn the event of an SCR breakdevn, ‘The kVp calibration circuit consists of another trans- former, TR104, and load regulation compensa~ tion potentioneters for calibration of the kVp meter at each mA station. The high tension transformer assembly contains the high-voltage components such as the transformer itself, filament isolation transformer, and recti- fers. ‘The exposure timer circuit consists of a line volt~ age phase anplifier/differentiator, phase memory, and an RC (resistance-capacitance) variable tine constant tiner with its associated tine select switch. An alarm is triggered by this circuit to give an audible indication that the exposure is in progress. The rotor control circu‘t receives commands fron the "expose" and "prep" buttons, then signals the exposure tiner circuit to begin the exposure after bringing the anode rotor up to speed. F ANENT POWER SUPPLY The output of TR2, the constant voltage trans former, is connected to a tap on R4, the fila nent boost resistor, anc through the "Prep" relay, to another tap. Since the constant voltage transformer procuces an output relative ly independent of input voltage and line load, the output of the filament circuit is relatively independent of seasonal and load induced line Fluctuations, The energizing of 11") serves to short out a greater portion of R4, thereby pro- viding filaweat boost velLaye during exposures. The output of R4 is fed to R2, the space charze compensation resistor, Connected across R2 is the secondary winding of TR3, the kV compensa— tion transformer, which receives a voltage that varies with the kV selected at the front panel. The operation of this circuit is such, that as the kVp increases, the drop across R2 increases, and more voltage is subtracted, thereby decreas ing the filanent voltage. This provides a dynam ic space charge compensation characteristic which ie combined with the compensation charac~ teristic provided by the adjustable taps on R2 for each mA station, R3 is provided to allow adjustment of the large focal spot voltages at 300,200 and 150 mA, while RS is provided for small focal spot voltages at 100 and at 50 mA. KVP CALIBRATION CIRCUIT (mA COMPENSATION) TRIO4, the mA Compensation Transformer, conpen- sates for those losses within the generator that are proportional to mA, At each mA station Fixed voltages are’ subtracted (through the appropriate tap) from the selected primary voltage, Since the current through the kV meter Ls proportional to kV and pover (at a particula mA station), potentiometers "5? through 56 can be set to drop voltages proportional to the AC line voltage drop. Thus when the potentioneters are cali- brated to reflect the pover line load regulation, the kV reading is accurate even when the pover Line voltage drops significantly with increasing ROTOR CONTROL CIRCUIT When the generator is turned on, +24 volts is routed through a norsally closed contact of “7%, the delay relay. Upon initiation of the "PREP" or "EXPOSE" functions, the backup contactor, K5, is energized, along with K6, which supplies the tube stator with 230 volts, and “2%, the "PREP" relay. When 0) energizes, R4, the filament boost resistor, is par tially shorted out, allowing a filament boost volt- age to be applied to the tube. 207 also applies 424 volts to the "PREP" and "EXPOSE" switch, latch- ing itself, KS, and K6, and, in addition, applies +24 volts to the normally open contacts of "201, the main stator winding current sense relay, and a contact on K2! When the current sense relays both energize ("21/1 and'°"2), indicating continuity through the stator, 424 volts is applied to 27%%, beginning a tined se~ quence. When 229% charges to a proper value, energizes, routing +24 volts to the normally closed contacts of K201 and :202so that K204 latches it- self vhen the stator voltage falis to the "run" value. K7 energizes, routing 45 VAC to the stator (through #21 and ‘202) and voltage is routed through the interlock chain (Bucky, collimator and tube thermostat) to provide power to the "EXPOSE" switch. ‘then the "EXPOSE" button is depressed, 24 VAC is applied to start the SCR timer through the key- switch (Lf used) and the exposure relay, K7. This energizes K208, which latches itself on’ through the "EXPOSE" switch so that no interruption at the collimator or Bucky interlocks can retrigger the exposure circuit, When the button(s) are released, the time delay capacitor, (205. discharges through the normally closed contacts of "204, OVERLOAD CIRCUIT ‘The "low" side of one of the secondary windings of the anode-cathode transformer is returned to ground through the "ma" meter, 106, shunted across the coil of the magnetic circuit breaker, (BIOL, is selected to allow at least 600 mis (or 300 ma for 2 seconds.) When the tube cur- rent-tine product substantially exceeds this value, the circuit breaker trips, disconnecting the generator from the line, EXPOSURE TIMER CIRCUIT TR205, the exposure timer power supply transforner, is energized vhen AC power is turned on. The sec- ondaries are connected to the SCR Contactor Board, which contains the 24 VDC supply for the control circuitry, the multi-voltage power supply for the SOR Timer Board, and the phase amplifier/different- fator. ‘The phase anplifier/differentiator circuit condi- tions the line frequency to develop two complimen- tary pulses that occur each 16,7 milliseconds. The 60 Hz sine wave entering at pins 15 and 16 is squared by Ql and Q3 for one leg, and Q2 and Qé for the other. ‘These signals proceed to a differentiating network composed of RII-Cl-R14 for one side, and R12-C2- R16 for the other. The resultant waveforms that appear at the collectors of Q5 and Q6 are both positive-going. These waveforms are applied to Q9 and QLO which form a set-reset flip-flop. On alternate cycles, G@uring an exposure) when pin 10 (the inhibit line) is High, Q9 and QLO toggle to produce a clean square wave at the line frequency. During exposures, the resultant output from Q14 is applied to one leg of the pulse trans~ former (TR1) primary. The other flip-flop output is inverted by Q11-Q13, resulting in a positive-going pulse appearing at TR every 16.7 seconds, and a negative-going pulse also appearing at the same point every 16.7 seconds, but shifted by 180°, ‘This signal is now used to induce voltages in tne secondary windings which fire SCR201 and $CR202 on alternate half cycles. The energizing of relay K208 completes the circuit between pins 21 and 24 on the SCR Timer board. This in turn energizes the mercury wetted relay K2 which applies an integrated signal to Ql, which turns off Q2. This unclanps CR2. Tf the Q9-a10 flip-flop on the SCR Contactor Board is outputting pulses to pins 2 and 4, as it does at the beginning Of the exposure (since its inhibit line is high), another differentiated pulse (by vay of C3 and Cé) is "OR" gated through CR6 and CR7. This turns on QU5, which turns off Q16, conditioning the flip- flop formed by Q17 and Qi8. When Q17 goes lov, CRS is unclanped. This signals a "start of count" to the timing capacitor, C2. C2 now charges in a Linear slope due to the constant current source formed by Q3 and the timing resistor selected at the front panel, This capacitor charges to approx!- mately #15 volts, established by CR3. Q6, an FET source-follower, acts as an unleaded output, and transistors Q5 and Q6 act as a trigger to turn on Qi? to signal an "end of count". The trigger is Set at approximately 8 volts of charge on the timing cavacitor. At the "end of count" time, the low signal produced by Ql? is routed back to pin 10 of the SCR Contactor board, leaving the Q9-Ql0 £1ip-flop in the last logic state. This stops the gate pulses at the primary of TR2, and ends the exposure, The flip-flop formed by Q7 and QB is slaved to the line frequency. The outputs are used to condition the equivalent 3~input NOR gate forned by Q9 and Q10. Depending on the logic state of the Q9-Q10 flip-flop on the SCR contactor board, Q9 and Q10 (timer board) either both go low, indicating that the current polarity is the same polarity as the last exposure or Q9 goes high and QUO goes low (if it 1s different.) If both are Jow, Ql1 is on, turning off Q12 (this prevents the Q9-Q10 £1ip-flop from toggling, preventing the exposure.) Since the Q7-08 flip-flop is al- ways changing state, the Q9 and Q1O NOR gates go to opposite states. This lifts the inhibit line and permite the next exposure at the opposite polarity. MAINTENANCE 5-1 Routine Inspection Control Console Turn OFF power at the wall disconnect box, remove rear panel and perform the following meintenance checks: 1. These procedures assune that the original instal- lation and calibration of the generator have been made according to the instructions in this manual. The Following checks should be made at the inter- vals indicated in the Maintenance Schedule below: © confirm that pover line is adequate @ check timer calibration @ check mA calibration © confirm safety circuits are functional 2 Note: Power line test ~ follow procedure described in paragraph 2-7 d of this manual. ‘Tiner test - follow procedure described in paragraph 2-7 a of this manual. mA calibration ~ follov procedure described in paragraph 2-7 ¢ of this manual. The filament omission characteristics of an x-ray tube go through a change which is re~ lated to the total wat:-hours of filament ON time, and the peak temeratures used. The initial evaporation rate is generally high, making the filament change more rapidly dur- ing the first hours of use. The normal change is in the direction of an increase in enission characteristics, After several thousand PREP cycles the rate of change levels off, requiring filament correction at less frequent’ intervals. Safety circuits - verify the following: 1, MA and pre-reading KV Meters operate properly. 2, Exposure lamp ligh:s during exposure. 3, Audible signal functions during exposure. 41 Exposure terminates if EXPOSURE pushbutton is released ("dead man" operation). Warning legend on operator control panel is visible and readable. 6, Caution legend on top of HT Transformer ts legible. Maintenance Schedule First calibration: 30 days after installation or after first 2500 expo- sures, whichever occurs first. Second calibration: 90 days after installation or after first 7500 expo sures, whichever occurs first. Third and thereafter: every 180 days. ‘A maintenance log sheet {s provided to record that this maintenance has been accomplished. If the x-ray tube unit 1s replaced, a complete generator calibration should be performed as described in section 2~7 of this manual. ‘This manual (IM-1030014) covers all generators starting with serial number and all subsequent units. 325R X-ray For purposes of comonent location, components are prefixed as shown below: no prefix console, contactor & timer p.c. boards 100 series fron: panel 200 series contactor-timer assenbly REF DES PART # DESCRIPTION c-990902 control console, tested panpmns-1 front panel, stikscreened ML ——«-P-990914-1 meter, kV select M2 -990915-1 meter, mA select $101 P-754785 switch, power tap, kV select $102 P-754786 switch, selector, mi select $103 F-990918 switch assembly, time select P-754576-52 resistor, 499-9, 1/4 M P-754576-60 resistor, 1K, 1/4 Wy i PA754576-68 resistor, 1.5 K, 1/4 ¥, uw P-754576-73 resistor, 2K, 1/4 Wy uw P-754576-78 resistor, 2.49 K, 1/4 W, uw P-754576-83 resistor, 3.01 K, 1/4 W, iu P-754576-88 resistor, 4.02 K, 1/4 W, aw P-754576-97 resistor, 6.04 K, 1/4 W, uw P-754765-8 resistor, 7.5K, 1/4 Wy um P-754576-8 resistor, 9.09 K, 1/4 W, uw P-754765-7 resistor, 12.1 K, 1/4 W, ct] P-754765-3_ resistor, 15K, 1/4 W, 1% P-754765-10 resistor, 18.2°K, 1/4 W, cr] P-754765-11 resistor, 24.3 K, 1/4 W, uw PA754765-12 resistor, 30.1 K, 1/4 W, Mm P-754765-13 resistor, 36.5 K, 1/4 W, 53 POTSK76S-14 resistor, 48.7 K, 1/4 W, 1% P-756765-15 resistor, 60.4 K, 1/4 W, az P-754765-16 resistor, 90.9 K, 1/4 W, 53 P-754765-17 resistor, 121 K, 1/4 W, az P-754765-21 resistor, 178 K, 1/4 W, 53 P-756765-22 resistor, 237 K, 1/4 W, uw P-754765-23 resistor, 357K, 1/4 W, 53 K10—-P-754806-2 Hi-Lo KV Changeover S105, P+754790-1 switch, Bucky ON/OFF, (2) 8106 107 $108 $109 01 cBi01 K5,K6 TRL Te ‘TR1O4 ™3 FL 2 3 4, F7 F5 F6 TEL 132 R2 3 6 BS a 2 P-754790-2 +754790-3 P-754797=1, P-754790-90 B-754788 P-754726-4 -754726-5 -754726-6 B-754726-7 B754726-8 P-754726-9 P+754726-10 -990920-1 P-754793-2 PA754794-2 P-990926 P-990927 P-990928 P-990929, P-756717-16 PA754717-17 P-754659-22 2-754659-26 P-754659-33 P-754800~32 -990921-4 -990921-10 P-990919-22 B-754796-1 P-754795-1 P-754795-2 P-754795~3 P-754795-4 P-754783-3 P-754783-2 switch, PREP switch, EXPOSURE switch, key S.P.S.T. indicator, line circuit breaker resistor, 220 9, resistor, 240 9, resistor, 270 9, resistor, 300 9, resistor, 330 9, resistor, 360 9, resistor, 390 9, selected knob, (3) relay, 24 V-DPST (30A) relay, 24 V-DPST (30A) autotransformer transformer, filament stabilization transformer, KV compen— sation transformer, mA compen— sation 15 Amp 20 Amp 1.25 Amp, slowblow 2 Amp, slow-blow fuse, 5 Amp, slow-blow fuse, 10 Amp, slowblow terninal block, 4-position terminal block, 10-position terminal block, 22-positton resistor, wire wound, .2 0, 300 W resistor, wire wound, 25 0, 175.0 resistor, wire wound, 50 0, 1750 resistor, wire wound, 175. GVAIWY, AOLYaANAD See TUBE PROTECTION CIRCUIT A Tube Protection Circuit (TPC) protects the x-ray tube target fron instantaneous overloads. Indepen- dent adjustents are provided for long and short term power ratings for both large and small focal spots. This circuit coordinates kV, mA and Time selections so that whenever a conbination of factors exceed the tube rating, a pulsating alarn sounds. Similarly, the PREP and Expose functions are disabled. CALIBRATION Tine-Power Product Adjustment There are three means of adjusting the shape of the time-power product curve based on x-ray tube rating curves. Figure 3 {llustrates the principle of che time power curve generator. A voltage divider is set up by R49 and 51 to adjust the upper power Limit for the small and large focal spots. esis! ors R48 and 50 set the pover limits that would be obtained with a 6 second exposure for the snall and large focal spots. Using the rating chart for an x-ray tube, (e.g. Machlett Dynamax 40 1-2 ma) one can find that the short term power rating for the small spot is 22 KWP, and for the 2mm large spot, 45 KWP. A scale Factor has been determined based on the available power rating of the generator and the voltage available at the limit potentiometers, Ré8-R515 this figure is 0.23 volts/ktlowact. Using the same rating chart one would find 8 KHP and 20 KWP, respectively, at 6 seconds, the maximun exposure tine. This information would indicate that the resistors controlling the long term power ratings (R48 and 50 for 8 x 0.23 = 1.84 volts, and 20 x 0.23 = 4.6 volts, respectively) should be ad= justed. The procedure outlined assumes that either high power or low power x-ray tubes are used with this generator. There are two inputs to the heat comparator. ©" The actual KWP into the target. The assumed rating, as a function of exposure time. ‘The generator can only yield 45 KWP, while x-ray tube types exist with ratings in excess of 100 KNP at short exposure times. Adjust the power computer resistors. To do this set the generator controls for 100 kVp and 300 mA. With a DVM connected at the base of Ql (TPL), adjust R43 to obtain 6.9 volts. Adjust the generator for 125 kVp at 200 mA. Set R44 for 5.75 volts. Adjust the generator for 125 kV at 150 mA. Set. R45 for 4.3 volt Adjust the generator for 125 kV at 100 mA. Set RUb for 2.9 volts. Adjust the generator for 125 kV at 50 mAs Set RG for 1.43 volts. Consult the tube rating chart. Appended, for illustrative purposes, 1s the rating chart for the Dynanax 40, 42, HD4O and 59. Select the 50 mA station. This will activate the Small Spot controls. 45 Supplementary Information 325R Generator Tube Protection Circuit a, Look up the maxinuus power alowed for the snall spot (i.e. 100 kV, 1/120 of a second for the shortest time on the chart. Determine the mA value at this intersection, approxi~ mately 220 mA for the DX40. Connect volt meter to the emitter of Q6 (TP2), adjust R49 for 22 kW x 0.23 V/kW = 5.06 volts. b. Repeat above for large spot. Adjust mA switch for 200 mA. For DX40 1.0, 2.0 large spot ytelds 480 mA at 100 kV. Therefore, adjust R51 for 11.04 volts. c+ Look up the allowed current for the small spot at 6 seconds, 100 kVp. Determine the power. For the Di40, the intersection is 80 mA which yields 8 kW. Cornect a DVM to TP3 (Junction of R42 and R36). Adjust RGB for 8 x 0.23 = 1.84 volts. Turn the mA switch to the 50 mA station. Set the tine switch to 6 seconds. 4. For the large spot the pover fs 15 kW. Turn the mA switch to 200 mA, adjust the time switch to 6 seconds. Adjust R50 for 15 x 0.23 = 3.45 volt: 3. Set the time switch to 1 second. Determine for the large spot the maximum power allowed at 1 second, which for this example is 27 kW. At 300 mA this is 90 kV. Adjust the generator for these paraneters. Adjust Ré2 so that the alarm will sound. Turn the time switch to shorter exposure times; the alarm should not sound. caution ‘THE TPC CIRCUIT MUST BE ADJUSTED TO ENSURE SAFE OPERATION OF THE X-RAY TUBE. NOTE THAT THE CIR~ UIT TRACKS THE RATING CURVE WITHIN 202. NOTE There is no need to make expesures during this procedure. OPERATION To prevent operational difficulties, the operator should not change any technique factors when the generator {s in PREP or EXPOSE. When the pulsating alarm sounds, the time-power product should be reduced. THEORY OF OPERATION Power Signal A voltage proportional to kV is isolated by Tl, rec~ tified by DIL, and filtered by R25-Cl. An attenuator network, which is selected by the mA switch, provides 2 DC voltage proportional to the ¥V=mA product. R43 sets the proportionality for 300 mA, while R44, 45, 46 and 47 set the division ratios for 200, 150, 100 and 50 mA, respectively. The maximum DC voltage is 20 VDC. For 100 kV at 300 mA the voltage is set to be 6.9 volts = 0.23 volts per kilowatt. Time Switch The resistor network in the tine switch is used for two purposes: timing and tube protection. Relay K2 switches the tine deck from tube protection when de~energized to timing when energized. IE the techniques selected are within the preset Limits, relay Kl will be energized by Q4, the con parator output stage. When PREP {s energized the signal on Pl-1 will energize relay K2, transferring the timing resistor to the SCR timer circuit. Relay Kl will be latched by the PREP circuit via diode D6, so that transient conditions do not cause further state changes. If the technique factors are not valid, Qé will hold relay KI low, #25 volts will be fed to the astable nultivibrator 98, With relay Kl de~energized, the Prep-Expose signal will not initiate the exposure sequence.
