Argentinian Unwritten Rules

A culture shows the way of life of a particular group of people, regarding not only their behavior

and habits, but also their moral norms. These norms are the unwritten rules of a society that

establish what is an acceptable behavior, and those people who do not follow them may suffer

disapproval. In the case of Argentinian culture, greeting with a kiss, preparing mate when there

are visitors at home, and being respectful to the fans of the opposing football teams are

examples of unwritten rules.

First of all, Argentines are very warm and extrovert, so they are accustomed to greeting others

with a kiss on their cheeks. When they meet with a group of friends, relatives or another group

of acquaintances, Argentines always greet everyone with a kiss on the cheeks, even though

there are some people that are strangers in those groups. Greeting in this way conveys

courtesy and a show of affection, so while standing a couple of meters away and waving shows

coldness, and impoliteness in Argentina.

Secondly, it is extremely common for Argentines to put the kettle on and prepare some mates

when there are visitors at home. At any time in the morning or afternoon, even if it is hot or cold,

going to the home of a family member or friend and preparing mates to have a pleasant

conversation is the most appreciated thing in the world in Argentina. Because sharing a mate –

or even a cup of tea – is not just a simple infusion; and it means sharing with others and being

respectful, it is important to take it into account when it comes to receiving visitors in our

houses.

Finally, it is a crucial and fundamental rule to be respectful to the fans of the opposing football

teams in Argentina. To be a fan of a football team is one of the great passion of Argentines; nine

out of ten inhabitants is fan of a team. This means that they are fiercely competitive when it

comes to supporting their teams, so when someone is being disrespectful with them, there

might be negative consequences. Some basic rules so as not to avoid being disrespectful are:
not celebrating in front of the fans of the opposing team or wearing the shirt of your favourite

team in the territory of the opposing team.

In conclusion, as culture means “how people really do things in their country or society”, there

are many unwritten rules in each culture that characterize its people and establish what is an

acceptable behavior among them. Greeting everyone with a kiss, preparing mate to share

beautiful moments with visitors at home, and respecting the fans of the opposing football teams

are definitely good examples of unwritten rules in Argentina.
