How Trends and Risk Management Shape the Tourism on Hospitality Industry

On December 11, 2023, at Brgy's Millhouse GastroPub in Baliwag Bulacan, a lecture featuring Ms. Ma,
program director Crisanta R. Enriquez, and Academic Dean Mr. Jayson Villafuerte unfolded. Guest
speakers Mr. Jojo Villamin and Mr. Nolie Jay Ope shared insights.

Mr. Villamin discussed challenges in the tourism sector, emphasizing collaborative efforts with DOT and
UNWTO. He highlighted "revenge spending" trends, indicating a surge in domestic tourism in 2023.
Despite optimism, he cautioned about recovery delays due to pricing considerations.

Strategic initiatives for recovery include infrastructure investments, diversification of tourism offerings,
and a focus on eco-tourism and adventure tourism, projecting an overall recovery in 2024.

Innovative programs like Tourist Rest Areas and eArrival Pass Integration were introduced, showcasing a
forward-looking approach to enhance the tourist experience and address contemporary challenges.

Mr. Villamin's presentation offered a strategic vision for the future of Philippine tourism, emphasizing
innovation and sustainability in response to the COVID-19 pandemic's impact. Collaborative initiatives by
the DOT were outlined to initiate the recovery process.

Here are a few topics he talked about during the seminar:

The initiative focuses on enhancing tourism governance through collaboration between national and local
stakeholders, aiming to create a resilient and sustainable tourism framework. The goal is to coordinate
efforts in developing policies and practices that positively impact the entire tourism sector.

Beyond overseeing attractions, the initiative aims to improve accommodation, transportation, cultural
encounters, and infrastructure for a seamless and memorable tourist journey. The overarching objective is
to present a destination as an all-encompassing and enriching travel experience.

Investing in tourism infrastructure, including airports and roads, is essential for making the Philippines
more attractive to tourists. The emphasis on refining airport services underscores the need to address
current shortcomings. Prioritizing sustainability through waste reduction, energy conservation, and
responsible tourism practices is crucial.
Digital tools play a vital role in broadening outreach and enhancing the tourist experience. This includes
user-friendly online booking systems, real-time travel updates, and social media for effective promotional
activities. Collaborative partnerships with government entities, the private sector, and local communities
are emphasized for a sustainable and inclusive tourism industry.

Mr. Villamin highlighted ethical considerations in AI utilization, emphasizing data privacy, robust security
measures, and addressing biases in algorithms. He acknowledged the indispensable role of human
oversight, judgment, empathy, and ethical discernment in critical decision-making alongside AI. Mr.
Villamin urged a balanced and responsible approach, citing specific advantages of AI, such as chatbots for
inquiries and predictive data analysis for tailored services, while emphasizing responsible usage.

Mr. Ope, the second speaker, covered current trends and challenges in risk management. He emphasized
adaptability and strategic foresight in the complex business world, where standards can be both catalysts
for progress and sources of risks.

Key points included risk tolerance, compliance in business operations, financial or economic risks, and
discussions on supply chain risk, compliance risk, AI, machine learning, and collective risk management.

The seminar provided practical insights for businesses to thrive through adaptability and proactive risk
management. It offered actionable lessons for students and professionals in tourism, emphasizing
continuous learning and readiness for industry changes. Mr. Villamin's question, "Are you prepared?"
prompted reflection on personal and professional readiness in the evolving tourism landscape.
