FOREIGN AFFAIRS

DURING THE NEW

ORDER ERA

BACKGROUND
At the start the New Order, Indonesia was experiencing a crisis
due to the failure of the G30S/PKI rebellion, confrontation with
Malaysia, withdrawal from the UN, and the cold war between
the Western and Eastern blocs. The crisis caused social
upheaval, political instability, poverty, hunger, inflation, and
increased foreign debt. To overcome this crisis, the New Order
government led by Suharto carried out various reform steps in
the political, economic, social and cultural fields. One of these
steps is to improve relations with the international world.

CONCLUSION
During the New Order period, Indonesia
sought to fix the international relations that
were cut off or broken in the old order
period, in order to amass support for
indonesia internationally. By promoting free-
active politics, the New Order implemented
a low-profile, pragmatic and pro-Western
foreign policy.
