CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Welding requires different levels of capability from learners. It is important that

learners’ knowhow to operate equipment related to Shielded Metal Arc Welding

(SMAW). Before or at the start of the practice, one has to know all of the equipment

and how to handle the welding machine efficiently and effectively. individuals for

industrial assignments as punctually as possible for various levels of skill

requirement. The challenge arises in high schools, universities, and technical

institutions to adequately recruit and prepare younger talent.

Welding is a technique for combining metals that involves melting a portion of

the base metal with a filler metal to create a continuous connection. Training in

SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) seeks to improve the welding abilities of

community members. For this reason, researchers will investigate the development

of training programs in the form of modules that can be utilized in teaching and

learning SMAW welding practice topics (Mallisza 2022).

The enactment of RA 10533 or the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013

added two years to basic education. One of the rationales offered by proponents of

the law is that Senior High School (SHS) graduates can work or engage in

entrepreneurial activities if they choose to do so. This study assesses the likelihood

of achieving the employment and entrepreneurship objectives of the program by

examining the experience of grade 12 graduating students and the views of firms

about the labor market prospects of the SHS graduates (Orbeta, 2018).
This study aims to: 1.) Describe the mastery level of employability; and 2.)

Find out the order of mastery of the employability skills of vocational senior high

school (VHS) students. This study was a survey-research with quantitative approach.

The research was conducted at a vocational high school in Madiun Regency with A

accreditation. Data collection instrument was a questionnaire that had been tested

for content validity by the experts (Janata, 2022).

Statement of the Problem

The overall purpose of the study is to contribute to the welding industry by

assessing and improving the employability skills of shielded metal arc welders,

ultimately benefiting both job seekers and employers in the field.

Theoretical Framework

Fundamentals of this long-used and versatile process are explained In shielded

metal arc welding (SMAW), an arc between a covered electrode and a weld pool is

used to accomplish a weld. As the welder steadily feeds the covered electrode into

the weld pool, the decomposition of the covering evolves into gases that shield the

pool. The process is used without application of pressure and with filler metal from

the covered electrode. The sound weld metal deposited by the process is used for

both joining and for applying a functional surface to metal products. Because of the

many possible variations in the composition of the electrode covering and the large

selection of core wire chemistry, the process can produce an extensive range of weld

metal deposits with desirable mechanical and physical properties, while providing for

a smooth arc, uniform metal transfer characteristics, and ease of operation.

Conceptual Framework of the Study

Significance of the Study

School Administrator. The study would be able to give inputs as to how

these learners are grasping the needed skills for them to be competent in welding.

Relevant empirical data would also provide a looking glass on how well the course is

being taught to the Senior High School learners.

Teachers. The information that they would get from the study would give them

proper attention to their students about SMAW, so that teachers could also help in

increasing the academic performance of their students not just by teaching them

lessons on the subjects they handled

Students. A better understanding on possessing good welding skills can

make them be more cognizant about welding skills and to improve student’s ability to

produce higher quality welds. They could wise the results of the study to enrich their

researches on welding.

Parents. This may give support and be aware of the possible benefits and

effect of being a welder student, parents might give their child extra allowance for

expenses.

Future Researchers. This study may be use as reference on the welding

skills of students, and for other researchers who might as well conduct the same

study in a different context.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study will aim to know the employability of SMAW students. The SMAW

students enrolled at Santa Cruz National High School Senior High School Campus

during the academic year 2023-2024 will be the respondents of the study.

Specifically, this study looked at their age and gender. A descriptive survey

questionnaire was administered to gather specific data about their welding skills and

their knowledge.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Ability to Follow Directions.

Carefully follows written and/or verbal directions. Asks for clarification, if necessary.

Adheres to safety guidelines. Requires minimal supervision beyond initial

explanation

Age.

The length of time that a person has lived or a thing has existed.

Applications of Safety Practices.

Safety practices not only improve working conditions but also positively influence

employees’ attitudes and behaviors with regard to safety, thereby reducing accidents

in workplace.

Evaluation.

It is the main purpose of a program evaluation that can be determined the quality of

a program by formulating a judgment “MartheHurteau, Sylvain Halve, Stephanie

Monbiot (2009). In this study, evaluation refers to the Grade 12 SMAW learners and

they are the ones who have welding as specialization.

Gender.

The state of being male or female or LGBT

Implication.

Contextualizing the findings within the research that helps readers to grasp the

significanceof the research.

Learners.

It is someone who is learning about a particular subject or how to do something. In

this study, alearner refers to the Grade 12 SMAW learners and they are the ones

who have welding as specialization.

Level of Assistance.

Outline of levels of assistance clients may require when performing physical tasks.

Skills.

It is ability and capacity acquired through deliberate, systematic, and sustained

effort to smoothlyand adaptively carryout complex activities or job functions involving

ideas (cognitive skills), things(technical skills), and/or people (interpersonal skills).

learners and they are the ones who have welding as specialization.

Welding.

It is a fabrication or sculptural process that joins materials, usually metals or

thermoplastics, bycausing fusion, which is distinct from lower temperature metal-

joining techniques such as brazing andsoldering, which do not melt the base metal.

(wikipedia.org). in this study, welders refer to the Grade 12SMAW learners and they

are the ones who have welding as specialization.

Tool Return.

All other cutting tools that are not stored in the tool carts, i.e., drill bits counter bores

andcounter sinks must be wiped clean before returning them into their storage bins

Hypothesis
