Answer all the questions and show your working clearly. Give non-exact numerical
answers correct to 3 significant figures, or 1 decimal place in the case of angles in
degrees, unless a different level of accuracy is specified in the question. The use of an
electronic calculator is expected, where appropriate.

1. a. Express 4𝑥 ! − 12𝑥 + 3 in the form (𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏)! + 𝑐, where 𝑎, 𝑏 and 𝑐 are constants

and 𝑎 > 0. [3]

b. Hence, find the coordinates of the turning point of the curve 𝑦 = 4𝑥 ! − 12𝑥 + 3. [2]
c. Sketch the graph 𝑦 = 4𝑥 ! − 12𝑥 + 3, showing the coordinates of the point where your
graph intersects the 𝑦-axis. [2]
d. Given that 𝑓(𝑥) = 4𝑥 ! − 12𝑥 + 3, write down the range of f. [2]

2. Find the set of values of 𝑚 for which the line 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 2 does not meet the curve
𝑦 = 𝑥 ! − 5𝑥 + 18. [5]

3. Functions f and g are defined, for 𝑥 ∈ ℝ, by

f(𝑥)= 3 − 𝑥,

g(𝑥)="#!, where 𝑥 ≠ −2.

a. Find g-1(x). [2]

b. Find fg(𝑥). [2]
