1 Aim
The aim of this procedure is to establish, implement and maintain an effective waste management
system.
To give effect to conditions of the Waste Management Licenses as issued to Mototolo: Lebowa and
Borwa Shaft as issued by the DEA
To outline systematic approach on all waste including; elimination, reduction, re-use, recycle and safe
disposal of waste.
2 Scope
This procedure is applicable to all mining related activities at Mototolo Mine, including all
sections on surface and underground.
3 Definitions
Term Definition
Combustible
Materials Means materials that can be burnt safely such as: wood, plastic, clothes material,
etc.

Enablon requirements. This document relates only to the ‘metrics’ – the S&SD data reporting
module. Capture of SHE data in this module is a mandatory Group requirement.
Waste that does not pose an immediate hazard or threat to health or to the
environment and it includes:
General Waste Domestic waste
Building rubble and demolition waste
Business and commercial waste and
Hazardous Any waste that contains organic or inorganic elements or compounds that may, owing
Waste to their inherent physical, chemical or toxicological characteristics of that waste, have
detrimental impact on public health and environment.
Hydrocarbon Any waste material that either contains or is polluted with hydrocarbon material. This
contaminated includes hydrocarbon waste that is mixed with water, liquids and any other solid
material: materials.
Old/Empty
Explosive Bags
and boxes Explosive bags and boxes which are empty yet once contained explosive material.
A rotable is critical in enabling the productive equipment it is fitted to, to perform its
intended production function to the desired level of performance.
Salvage Yard The area to which appropriate materials could be sent for sorting and storage of
waste.
Scrap This includes all scrap iron, which is non-salvageable and can be sold as scrap to a
dealer.

a) Mototolo Mine has appointed a contractor to manage and control all waste scrap metal generated by the
site excluding tyres.
b) The collection of waste will be done on a regular basis to ensure that the Salvage Yard stays in
a neat and tidy condition.
c) The Salvage Yard Coordinator must keep a detailed register for all the waste by commodity that
leaves the salvage yard. A printout of the register will be supplied at the end of each month to
the Environmental Coordinator .
d) A waste register of all waste generated at Mototolo Mine is to be kept up to date by the
Environmental Coordinator
e) The appointed waste management contractor Site Supervisor is responsible to inspect each bin
daily to ensure waste is disposed of into the correct bins or skips.

9 Procedure
9.1 Storage
b) Colour coded bins will be placed at strategic points and once full the bins will be transported to
the Salvage yard, where the contractor will sort the waste into the respective storage bins.
9.2 Sorting
Sorting of waste will take place at especially at the workshops and Salvage Yard the through the colour
coding system of the bins. All Mototolo employees to adhere to it.
Waste management contractor to ensure that the bins are emptied and cleaned on a daily basis.
All waste generated on site shall be emptied from the wheelie bins into an appropriate collection
medium and transported to the salvage yard.
Empty explosives bags and boxes will be transported from Lebowa's designated storage area
to Borwa burning bay.
From Borwa shaft all empty explosives boxes and bags to be transport to the burning bay.
a) The waste transporting vehicle must be weighed at Mototolo Concentrator Weight Bridge to
show the empty mass at all times.
b) After loading the commodity of waste, it is the responsibility of the waste management
contractor Site supervisor to sign waste register at the Salvage Yard and collect the
explosive free certificate.
c) All waste removed from Lebowa shaft will have an internal waybill to Borwa and external
waybill from Borwa shaft.
d) All waste that is to be removed off-site for landfilling or recycling will be dispatched only at
Borwa shaft.
e) The transportation vehicle must be weighed at Mototolo Concentrator Weight Bridge, copies
of the weight bridge tickets must be submitted beginning of the next shift to the Salvage Yard
coordinator and the Environmental Coordinator.
The waste shall be taken to a designated landfill site for disposal as per contract.
Copies of safe disposal certificates shall be submitted to the Environmental Coordinator
on a monthly basis
9.5 Batteries
All old/ failed batteries will be stored in a bunded, lockable area until removed from site and disposed
of as per OEM specifications.
Explosives boxes and used accessories are burned on site on a periodic basis as stipulated in the
Explosive procedure (MOTM-SHE-EXO-PRO-0001) and as stipulated in the Explosives Act 26/1956
Chapter 8.10.2
Old explosives boxes must be available at the salvage yard which must be plotted on the surface plan
of the applicable miner as per the explosives procedure. (MOTM-SHE-EXO-PRO-0001)
All old/redundant tyres are transported to each sites stores area and placed in a tyre rack.
The waste management contractor does not handle or dispose of tyres. Old / redundant tyres will be
removed by the contracted tyre supplier.
9.10 Reporting
Waste management figures are reported on a monthly basis through Enablon and Monthly Management
Meetings.
A detailed list of all waste removed per month is kept in the Environmental Coordinator’s Office.

The Salvage Yard Supervisor must identify the items and goods that have no further use to the
Mine. Those items that could be useful to other mine employees can be sold to mine employees.
Small quantities of non-hazardous scrap, such as wood, metal off-cuts, binding wire, etc.
can be sold at the same price per kilogram as recovered from the appointed, contracted
scrap dealer as per approved list with the respective cost per kg.
Usable items, such as petrol engines, non-standard tyres, canopies, old sanitary ware, etc.
can be sold on a tender basis
