give work expcrienee industry to students as preparation before enter the industry in real and as a
requirement to complete the Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Mechanical Engineering. The main
objective of the internship in simple term is to get practical experience of the theoretical knowledge
gained during the classroom session. The main task is to get along into the organization and do
tasks as required by the organization as well as the course of study. AB Mauri Malaysia Sdn Bhd
offered me as intern in engineering department supervise by Mr Siva Kumarasan, which is Plant
engineer in this company. Engineering department divided into three parts, which are maintenance,
process and project. It was a 12 weeks long internship program. In engineering department, all the
team members had to work almost whole week and sometimes overtime if needed. Like the team
members, I also had to work almost 5 days a week. In this company, I also responsible to complete
all tasks given by my supervisor by applying knowledge and skills learned theoretically in
classroom into practical by striving to improves my communication skills and improvi ng my
knowledge since I need to communicate with new people such as contractors awhile my supervisor
not around. Besides that, I also need to make sure every documentation arc keep updated to the

department of Engineering and safety under supervisor of Mr Siva Kumarasan who is the person
in charge as Plant Engineer. Our daily activities includes monitoring, patrolling and enforcing 5S
within the plant and also in the production area.

Engineering team will working together with maintenance team. Each issue that being
found during our daily activities and also issue that found by other department will be review by
engineering team and solution will be discuss. All of the solution will be excuted by the
maintenance team. Since my position as internship, my job scope not only with engineering team,
also with the maintenance team.

As my job scope not only revolve around Engineering department only, I have been given
oppurtunity to gain as much experience and knowloedge knowledge that we want hence sometimes
we just go and follow up along with other department like Quality Control (QC) Department and
Production Department. I also involve with the production team to oversee the process and the
works they do in the production line to make the final product. This process includes the process
such as mixing, satching, barcode, packaging and etc. Ad hocks tasks as well were given from
time to time to fill up the time that i had. Other than that, I also took an initiative to follow certain
individuals in maintenance team to carry out ther assign task by the Engeineering department.

issue in the plant they assign. This job request will be received by the engineering team.
Engineernig team will be review the problem. In reviewing the issue, maintenance team
will be be assigned to go to the site and monitor the problem. Person in charge who also
issue the problem also will be discuss with engineering team to consider if the problem are
high or low priority. High priority problem can be defined as a problem that can affect the
production line. Maintenance team will be discuss with engineering team to come up with
solution, after discussion and solution had been made up, maintenance team will excuting
the solution. After the issue had been solved, the job request form will be sign by the
maintenace team and the form will be store in file for further audit.

them.

3.3 Plant Drawing Project

Introduction:

In this project, 2 dimensional drawing of the plant should be made using the AutoCAD
software. In this drawing, 2 main plant should be made which is plant 1 (Margarine,
NDWT, Wet & dry) and plant 2 (Yeast & Mauripan). This plant drawing will be usefull in
further project incase if there are any changing of the layout for each the plant. Efficiancy
for each of the machine in the plant easily estimated.

Objective :

- Draw a 2D plant using AutoCAD software

- To expose on how the plant operate.

Methodology:

To complete this task, a draft should be made first before transferring to the AutoCAD
software. Site visit should be made to know of each the item that have in the plant. Person
in charge for each of the plant should be involve in this project to make sure for of the item
in the plant are included in the draft.

22
Conclusion:

Conclusion that can be made from this task, all of the objective had been archieved. By
doing this task, I was able to implement and practice the knowledge which I had been
learned during the class. More specifically, the subject of Computer Aided Design. From
my perspective, all of the knowledge and skilld which I had been learned are realy
important in achieving to complte this task.

3.4 Inventory Checklist Project

Introduction:

Inventory checklist can be defined as a task to calculate the total of each the mechanical
item in workshop. By doing this task, it will easier to know which of the component that
had a high priority in maintenance process. Lower value of the mechanical components in
workshop, means that component are usually used in maintenance and vice versa. Cost in
buying mechanical parts also can be optimized by focusing only the important mechnical
part. In this task, some modification of the original file had been done by myself to improve
and optimize this file for further planning.

Objective :

i. Expose to a variety of mechanical components.

ii. To ensure the smoothness in maintenance incase of breakdown.
iii. Key in the value of the mechanical components to the microsoft excel.

Methodology:

Most efficient method in completing this task was more going to the site (workshop). 5S
technique can be implement in doing this particular task. First step is to arrange all of the
mechanical part into a few different category. For each of the category, the different will
be the sizes.

23
Result:

All of the data (value of mechnical components) are shown in the figure below:

Figure 2.7: Data for the mechanical item.in workshop.

Conclusion;

As the conclusion, objective for this task had been archeived. From this task, I gain a new
knowledge about new mechnical components. By knowing this emchannical components,
it will be easier for me to propse a proper solution incase something breakdown.

24
3.5 Sachet Machine Project

This sachet machine was located at the plant 2. The purpose of this machine to excute the process
of packaging the yeast without using any human effort, which is semi-automated machine. In this
task, I had been assigned to the case study of this machine, monitor the machine if there are any
room for improvement of the efficiency and doing some routine work with maintenance team.

3.5.1 Case study of sachet machine

Introduction:

In food industry, packaging machinery had been used throughout all packaging operations
which is involving primary packages to distribution packs. In packaging amchinery, there are feew
process that usually involves which is : filling, sealing, vacuum, combining and cutting, labelling
and palletizing. There some case in industry where packaging operations cannot be accomplished
without packaging machine. For example, many packages include heat seals to prepare or seal a
package. Heat sealers are needed, even in slow labor-intensive operations.

Packaging operations can be designed for variable package sizes and forms or for handling
only uniform packages, where the machinery or packaging line is adjustable between production
runs. Certainly slow manual operations allow workers to be flexible to package variation but also
some automated lines can handle significant random variation. Moving from manual operations,
through semi-automatic operations to fully automated packaging lines offers advantages to some
packagers. Other than the obvious control of labor costs, quality can be more consistent, and
throughput can be optimized. Efforts at packaging line automation increasingly use programmable
logic controllers [3] and robotics. Large fully automatic packaging lines can involve several pieces
of major equipment from different manufactures as well as conveyors and ancillary equipment.
Integrating such systems can be a challenge. Often consultants or external engineering firms are
used to coordinate large projects.

25
Sachet machine at the location:

Figure 2.8: Sachet machine.

Type of machinery:

Packaging machinery usually can be known into few type, which is:

i. Accumulating and collating machines.

ii. Blister packs, skin packs and vacuum packaging machines.
iii. Bottle caps equipment, over-capping, lidding, closing, seaming and sealing machines.
iv. Box, case, tray, and carrier forming, packing, unpacking, closing, and sealing
machines.
v. Cartoning machines.

26
vi. Cleaning, sterilizing, cooling and drying machines.
vii. Coding, printing, marking, stamping, and imprinting machines.

General function of pakaging machinery:

i. Improve labor productivity. Sliding blister sealing machine packaging machinery is

much faster than manual packaging. One good example of this is the candy packing
machine. Here, hundreds to thousands of candies can be wrapped in minutes.
ii. Ensure packaging quality. Mechanical packaging is particularly important for
exported goods to achieve consistent packaging.
iii. Handle specialized requirements, such as vacuum packaging, inflatable packaging,
skin packaging and pressure filling.
iv. Reduce labor and improve working conditions for bulky/heavy products.
v. Protect workers from health effects brought by dust, toxic/hazardous products and
prevent environmental contamination.
vi. Reliably ensure product hygiene by eliminating hand contact with food and
medicines.

3.5.2 Improvement of sachet machine

Introduction:

By monitoring and observing the sachet machine, there are some of the problem that can affect the
efficiency of the machine. In this task, by observing the sachet machine, I need to suggest the
solution that usually came up and discuss with the maintenance team on how to improve the
efficiency the machine (reduce wastage)

Objective :

i. To study the machine.

ii. To record any findings from the point of view of mechanical.
iii. Record any issue and propose a possible solution.

27
Methodology:

i. Doing a discussion and site visit with maintenance.

ii. Observing and monitoring the machine.
iii. Split the problem into different category.
iv. Propose a possible solution to counter the problem.
v. The design are done in Solidwork software.

Result: *all units used in the drawing are mm.

Excess plastic from the sachet sometime can snap
into two due to the heat during the process of sealing
the sachet. This plastic will be hard to pull out if snap
into two since the other strip will stick to the hot
sealing rotors.

Figure 2.9: Inside of sachet machine.

Solution:

Dealing with the hot object, a holder for the plastic strip should be design to ease the accessibility
to pull out the plastic strip if snap into two. Possible design for the housing is shown in figure
below: The design had be draw using the Solidwork software. Type of material can be used in
fabrication is Stainless steel which have high durability against corrosion.

CHAPTER 4

CONCLUSION

4.1 Summary

In conclusion, all of the objective for this internship had been archieved. Thanks to the
supervisor, Mr Siva Kumarasan which had given too much oppurtunity to involve in this industry.
Almost all of the knowledge and experience with working maintenance team are very related from
I had been learned during the class. This internship has been a very useful experience for me. I can
safely say that my understanding of the job environment has increased greatly. However, I do think
that there are some aspects of the job that I could have done better and that I need to work on. I
need to build more confidence in applying accounting principles. I realized that I could have
completed the work earlier than I did. Also, the technical parts of the job were a bit flawed and I
was asked multiple times to correct it. The two main things that I learned after my experience in
this company are the importance of time management and being self-motivated.

I throughly enjoyed my time as doing internship at AB Mauri Malaysia Sdn Bhd. All of
the experience allows me to gain more exposure on manufacturing industry and allow me to
identify my potentials and see how an industry are doing my things. Through the connections I
have made and all the working relationship have shaped me into who I am today. Not only that, I
actually manage to identify any theoretical solutions and remedy over practical situations that we
can see in the factory. This is one of the exciting things that can be gained through the experience.
I wish someday I would be given a chance to be in this industry and might as well start a career
here upon my graduation.

CHAPTER 5

RECOMMENDATION

It would be very much helpful if these recommendations can be considered and include into
company’spolicy which I believe that will elevate this company towards developing local youths
and provide evenbetter practical education for all. All the suggestion and improvements are listed
below:

i. More hands-on work (unless deemed not suitable due to health concern)
ii. A syllabus or a framework to allow interns to train with.
iii. Should continue with internship program, this is because it helps to prepare the
students for their careers in future and also enable the students to practice the
theoretical knowledge obtained during class be exercised practically. It also helps
to develop students understanding of work ethics, employment demands,
responsibilities and opportunities.
iv. Change the internship period, The University should at least adjust on the period
students go for internship especially for the engineering students since some of the
engineering project in company will goes almost 4 to 5 months.
