CRIME PREVENTION

DEFINITION; These are steps taken by a society or community to prevent criminal acts and behaviours
from happening.

Through crime prevention data concerning those that commit criminal acts and the crimes they
commit is well taken care of. In addition to this crime prevention evaluates laws and regulations in
order to prevent all criminal acts.

The community has come with strategies that help prevent criminal acts and behaviors.
The three major strategies are;-
- Situational crime prevention-this strategy tries to reduce opportunities to commit
crimes and make it more difficult to break the law ) Its main focus is to reduce
opportunities for committing crime. Examples of this strategy are; implementing
barriers such as doors and window locks anti –climb paint , security personnel , cctvs ,
designing spikes ,barbed wire , all in prevention of criminals who can take advantage of
certain situtions to commit crimes .
A landscape architect makes several recommendations in relation to the
development of a new housing estate. Some of these recommendations include the
planting of low growing vegetation at the front of all homes and the installation of a
garden bed along the front of the fences. Is this a crime prevention measure? This is a
situational crime prevention because barriers have been placed to prevent all
opportunities that could result to criminal acts .

-Communitity crime prevention ( involves collaboration with the local community. This includes
bringing together individuals who are more likely to commit crimes and intervening in some form.) Real
life examples include , the troubled families programme in the UK.

a) A home visit by an early health nurse to all new parents is provided to check on how
they are managing the demands of parenthood. Is this a crime prevention measure?
In this scenario there are parents who may refuse to take responisibility of their children
in ways like not taking their kids to school which is against s. 127 of the Childrens’ Act
and therefore intervention of the nurse will aid in crime prevention by the parents.

-Environmental crime prevention ( this emphasizes on role of an environment in


encouraging crime) examples are; zero tolerance policing which involves the police
strictly enforcing every facet of the law, curfews, street drinking bans dispersal orders
and many more.
