EXERCISE 1: INFORMATION TRANSFER

Travelling on a Bicycle
At a young age, Matthew Cheong had two interests; travelling and cycling. He hoped to go on a cycling
holiday because he longed to experience the freedom of cycling through town and countryside without
following fixed tours. He finally was able to fulfil his wish when he turned 25.
Matthew took several months to plan his first holiday which was a three-month cycling tour across
four countries. Matthew started his holiday in Bangkok, Thailand. During the following weeks, he explored
several towns and cities in Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos.
Matthew visited many famous attractions, talked to locals and got suggestions to visit lesser known
but authentic local places, ate local cuisine and took plenty of photos and travel videos.
For the last 12 months, Matthew has been busy; training and planning for his next cycling adventure
because it will be four times longer than his first trip. In about six months, Matthew will begin his 28,000 km
trip across ten countries.
Matthew plans to do more activities along the way. Besides taking short videos and photos, he is
going to shoot blogs and post the videos on the popular video streaming channel.
Though Matthew has saved a lot of money for the trip, he plans to do odd jobs along the way. Besides
earning some extra money for emergencies, he wants to meet new people.

EXERCISE 2: SHORT ANSWER

Read the text and answer questions 1 to 8.

Your parents do their part to keep you safe and healthy. But there are many things you can do to maintain
good health. The following are simple but effective tips to stay healthy.

One thing you can do is eat your meals at the dining table and not in front of the television. Your
metabolism slows down when you sit in front of the television. Did you know that you burn eight to ten calories
when you sit on a chair doing nothing. Therefore, have your meals at the dining table.

Another tip is to eat when you are actually hungry. Sometimes, people eat when they are bored. If
you are hungry and want to eat between meals, choose a healthy snack. Have fruit, some nuts or yogurt
instead of fatty or sweet food. Many times we mistake thirst for hunger. Try drinking some water first before
reaching for some snacks. And learn to recognise the true signs of hunger before eating.

One more tip is to drink more water. Stay away from juices and soft drinks as they may contain
artificial sweeteners or added sugar. Importantly, all that extra sugar is extra calories and not good for your
body.

The fourth tip is to stay away from unhealthy food. The best is not to have unhealthy and junk food
in your house so you won’t be tempted to eat them especially when you are hungry. Don’t have too much
food at home either. You are more likely to overeat when there is extra food in the house.

Finally, resist the urge to buy snacks, soft drinks and junk food when you go grocery shopping with
your parents. Make sure you don’t go grocery shopping when you are hungry. Eat a small healthy snack – if
you are hungry – before you go shopping. You are likely to buy more or make poor food choices, when you
go grocery shopping on an empty stomach.
