Differences:Stone is natural, hard substance formed from minerals and earth material which are

present in rocks. Rock is the portion of the earth's crust having no definite shape and structure.

Generally used as blocks that are furthermore used for slavs, facing structures, windows and other
purposes. Can also be used for decoration.

Uses of stones:Foundation and wall items, Facing and architectural items, Building items, Road
construction items, Underground structures and bridges, Heat and chemicallly resistant items.

Characteristics of good stone:Appearance, Structure, Strength, Weight, Hardness, Toughness,


Porosity and absorption, Weathering, Workability, Fire resistance, Specific gravity.

Deterioration of stone:Rain, Frost, Wind, Temprature changes, Vegitable growth, Mutual decay,
Chemical agents.

Artificial stone is made with cement and natural aggregates of the crushed stone and sand.

For structural purposes, Granite, gnelss, trap, sandstone, limestone, marble, quartzite and slate are
mostly used.
