their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your
story.

Number Soup

From the moment I remember first tasting it to now, I have always loved alphabet soup. Though
the taste is comforting and flavorful, my favorite part is the ability to play and spell whatever you
want through the noodles. From that soup, I could quickly pick up the alphabet and race through
any class discussion regarding spelling and vocabulary. However, my alphabet soup didn’t warn
me about the difficulty of mathematics. I could never fully grasp the concept of numbers, and it
became increasingly frustrating when I discovered the art of music. Over time, I found out that this
frustration was due to Dyscalculia. Even through my passions, my brain had always set me one
step behind everybody else.

I first joined band in the sixth grade. It was not by choice; my mother had forced me to take it, but I
was in no mood to complain because I was curious about the program. I had played piano for
years before, but I did not take it seriously, so the concepts of time signatures and “steps” in music
were very limited in my head. I joined a beginner class, so it was less of a worry about the timing
and more about being able to produce an actual sound. I was not the best, but my willingness to
learn had given me the opportunity to shine. However, this advantage did not last long, as I was
still struggling with the concept of counting while we were quickly diving into more complicated
pieces.

This gap in skill became even more apparent when I moved back to Arizona. Beforehand, I was
living in rural Nevada, where they put little emphasis on their music programs. I thought I was
average, but then moving back to Arizona, it was apparent how behind I was. Not only were my
playing abilities subpar, but I was struggling with a basic ¾ time signature. To combat this
frustration, I asked my parents about signing me up for music lessons. Though struggling with
money, they understood my perspective and allowed me to take the lessons to improve upon
playing flute. I was never able to process the counts whilst I was playing, so I put all of my time
into my expression and tone. If I could not ever get my timing right, I wanted to be able to play with
a rich tone. This plan would both give me numerous new opportunities, as well as sabotage me in
the process.

I was given the opportunity to perform a well-written and expressive solo piece for my school’s
marching band program. The Desert Vista Thunder Marching Band is known for being the top in
the state. With nine state championship titles in eleven years to their name, I joined one of the
most competitive programs in the nation. Due to my ability to be expressive, I was chosen to play
the melodic piece. However, the quick tempo changes would catch me, and I was belittled by staff
and my peers.

I constantly felt like I was ruining our ability to place as we had been before. It wasn’t until a group
of underclassmen had come up to me and told me that I “sounded beautiful” and was doing “just
enough”, that I was able to combat my frustration from all of these years and overcome my
learning disorder.

Though numbers will never come easily to me, I found that by acknowledging your weaknesses,
you are able to value your strengths. Whether it is from the words that I write or the music that I
play, I find joy in allowing myself to be free with my talents. Math is so restricting; though it has
infinite possibilities, there are only so many correct ways to find the answer. With words and
music, similar to my alphabet soup, there is no incorrect answer to how you express yourself.

Throughout the time I have spent in my life surrounded by others, I find collaboration to be the
most impactful. I have done marching band for all four years of my high school career, and that
activity is dependent on the strength and foundation of collaboration. Whether it comes from
blending the sound of our different instruments, marching in time so we don’t fall like dominoes, or

boosting the morale of the group, collaboration is what leads my school’s marching band program
to be the best in the state. Our staff always had the saying, “Bend but don’t break." I understood
the concept but did not see the true meaning until our band was tested with other groups
attempting to beat us. When our morale would fall and drama was high, that is when other bands
would catch up and beat us, but when we worked as one and allowed for growth, we were able to
maintain our position in the state. I am so thankful to have the opportunity to be a part of such a
big band with a strong reputation because if I had not been given that opportunity, I don’t think I
would value the idea of dedication and teamwork as much as I do now. Marching band has had a
huge impact on my life, and that is also why I strongly resonate with the idea of collaboration.

Essay #2

I have always valued the idea of creating a safe and inclusive environment for the communities I
am surrounded by. When I was first diagnosed with Depression, the specialists I saw
recommended that I go to a therapist so I could improve my mental health. That plan had not
worked out; none of the therapists in my area wanted to take me in because I was “too young”, so I
was left alone to figure out the workings of my mind. From that, I was able to find my passion in
journaling, so for any moment I was stressed or wanted to rant about my worries, I could relax and
relieve myself by putting pen to paper. However, this made me realize that others could be in the
same position as I was, so from then forward, I made it my life goal to lend a hand to others when
they’re going through their struggles. In my school’s marching band program, we have a tradition
called “Friendship Mail.” Friendship mail is little notes that you write to anybody in the band.
They’re put into a bag and they can be read during halftime during the football game. I always
make sure to let those that I write to that I am always available when they need to talk, and that
little message had let me save a life.
