How English Affects My Life

Everything has a first step, and so do I with English. It started when I was
in elementary school. in almost every examination, I got perfect scores in English
subject. Then, when I was in sixth grade, my English teacher finally selected me to
participate in a storytelling and speech contest. I had never won either of those
contests. Nevertheless, my English skills had improved and it really helped me to
pass the Bilingual Class Programme in junior high school.
When I was in junior high school, I was quietly prominent because of my
English skills. It was one of the reasons that once led me again become a delegate
from my school to competed. Still, I failed; I feel like I had never had a chance to
win. Even so, my teacher still had faith in me. Then, in the fourth competition, I
ultimately achieved victory; two victories ahead on west java scale.
The victories led me to succeed in gaining high school admission through
an achievement-based way. On the other hand, that attainment trapped me into what
people called the Dunning-Krugger effect; I became stuck because of me
overestimated my own abilities. Consequently, I felt very challenging to answer
question on the college entrance exam. The result of that exam is conceivably
worse.
I made up my mind to take a gap year after receiving those results. Then, I
was determined to rectify my English skills by starting from the basic and
immersing myself in media that using the English language. I watched movies and
series, read news, Googled everything, and listened to podcasts, all in English.
Unexpectedly, those efforts resulted in a 'kill two birds with one stone'
effect. Not only did I learn the language, but I also became more open-minded. I
received knowledge about medical, politics, philosophy, psychology, financial. As
one of the results, I began to exercise regularly, became selective about what I eat,
and established a consistent bedtime. therefore, I ultimately got excellent score on
my second collage entrance exam and got accepted to Universitas Pendidikan
Indonesia.
Indeed, it is not an easy thing to do for me after all. However, learning
English has shaped me into a person with patience; acquiring English requires a
considerable amount of time, resilience; the faith that i had to hold onto even when
i felt acquire English was impossible, insatiability; always felt that i needed to keep
learning, because language is something that continually grows.
