• Put students in pairs and give each pair a set of picture


cards and a set of phrase cards. Ask them not to look
at the cards, but to lay them out face down in front
of them, keeping the two sets separate. Note: the
numbers and letters on the cards should be ignored.
These are for checking the answers at the end of the
activity.
• The first player turns up a picture card. This player has
to say the shopping phrase that they think is illustrated
on that card.
• The same player then turns up a phrase card. If the
two cards match, this player keeps the pair of cards,
and they can also have another turn. Note: if the player
didn’t say the exact phrase on the card, they must turn
the cards face down and try again next time.
• If the cards don’t match, they turn them face down
again in the same place and it’s their partner’s turn.
• Students continue taking turns until all the cards have
been matched. The winner is the person with the most
pairs of cards.
