Assignment: Open Ended Lab Weightage 15%
CLO3 Ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for
engineering practice.

Problem Statement:
To analyze Rankine Heat Engine Cycle, and optimize the cycle efficiency with respect to
maximum and minimum working pressures.

Objectives:
Optimization is maximizing output within certain operating constraints. Rankine Heat Engine
cycle is mainly composed of two adiabatic and two isothermal processes, the following figure
shows The Ts diagram of an ideal Rankine Heat Engine Cycle. You need to analyze the cycle for
a range of boiler and condenser pressures with a constant degree of superheating and sub-cooling,
to get the characteristic curves and to find the conditions where efficiency of the cycle becomes
maximum within the given constraints. You can use either Engineering Equation Solver (EES) or
MATLAB for analysis and for plotting Ts and Ph diagrams.
Characteristic curves will be Wout vs Pump Inlet Pressure, Wout vs Boiler Inlet Pressure, Back Ratio
vs Pump Inlet pressure, Back Ratio vs Boiler Inlet Pressure, Cycle Efficiency Vs Pump and Boiler
Inlet Pressures.

Specifications:
Working fluid will be water.
Boiler Pressure will range from BP_1 bar to BP_2 bar in ten increments.
Condenser Pressure will range from CP_1 bar to CP_2 bar in ten increments.
Constant degree of subcooling and superheating will be taken at T K.
Mass Flowrate of water to boiler to be taken m_f kg/s.
BP_1 = 3.6 + 0.2(x)
BP_2 = 5.8 + 0.1(x)
CP_1 = 1.0 + 0.4(x)
CP_2 = 0.5 + 0.5(x)
T = 3 + 0.1(x)
m_f = 0.3 + 0.15(x)
where x is remainder after summing Last Digit of Registration numbers of all three members and
dividing by 3.
For example, CMS IDs of three members are 367823 389076 377768, x will be remainder of
(3+6+8)/ 3 = 17/3, nearest number divided 3 is 15 so x will be 17 – 15 = 2.
Deliverables:
Group Report in Word Format in both soft and hard form.
Submission Guidelines:
Students are required to submit the deliverables of Open Ended Lab till 30th April 2023, 11:59
pm. Soft form submission will be on MS teams, for that, assignment will be created in due course.
Title of the report should be your group number. Moreover, reports will be collected in hard form
as well till the mentioned date. Late submissions will not be allowed.
Note: Maximum allowed similarity index is 30% with any internet source. After 30%, each percent
will result in deduction of 0.5 mark (e.g., if a student has similarity index of 32 %, 1 mark will be
deducted from overall obtained marks).
Students are not allowed to copy other students’ work, students involved in plagiarism will be
marked 0.
Suggestion:
You will be provided with sample solution for single set of condenser and boiler pressures.
Follow the template and rubrics mentioned below to score maximum marks.
