Topic : Chemical Kinetics & Alcohols, Phenols, Ethers

Std.: 12th Marks: 25 Time: 1.5 hour

1) A first order reaction A→B requires activation energy of 70 kJ/mol when 20% solution of
A was kept at 25oC for 20 min. 25% of decomposition took place. What will be the
percentage decomposition of 30% solution at 40 oC in the same time. Assume activation
energy remains constant in the range of temperature. [2]
2) The time required for 10% completion of a first order reaction at 298 K is equal to that
required for its 25% completion at 308 K. If the value of A is 4 x 10 10 s-1, calculate k at
318 K and Ea. [2]
3) During a nuclear explosion, one of the product is 90Sr with half life of 28.1 years. If 1
microgram of 90Sr was absorbed in the bones of a newly born baby instead of calcium
how much of it will remain after 10 years and 60 years if it is not lost metabolically? [2]
4) Write the rate law expression for the reaction A + B + C → D + E, if the order of the
reaction is first, second, and zero with respect to A, B and C. How many times the rate
of reaction will increase if the concentration of A, B and C are doubled in the equation
given above? [2]
5) Give reasons: [3]
a. Phenol is more acidic than alcohols.
b. Ethyl alcohol and dimethyl ether have same molecular formulae, yet the boiling
point of ethyl alcohol is more than dimethyl ether.
c. Ethanol gives iodoform reaction while methanol does not gives iodoform reaction.
6) Name two organic compounds which have the same molecular formula C2H6O. Will they
react with PCl5? If they react, what are the products formed? [2]
7) Mention the balanced chemical equations of the following: [10]
a. Acetaldehyde is treated with methyl magnesium bromide.
b. Ethyl amine is treated with nitrous acid.
c. Isopropyl alcohol is treated with Cu tube at 573 K
d. Phenol is treated with acetyl chloride.
e. Phenol is treated with bromine water
f. Phenol is treated with conc.HNO3 in presence of conc.H2SO4

g. Phenol is treated with benzene diazonium chloride.
h. Diethyl ether is treated with chlorine in dark.
i. Ethyl methyl ether is treated with cold HI.
j. Ethyl methyl ether is heated with hot HI.

a. Ethanol to formaldehyde
b. Methanol to acetaldehyde
