HANDLING, STORAGE AND PRESERVATION OF PIPES & FITTINGS
Date: 01ST May 2023 Document No: SP 01 Revision Number 01

Scope:
This procedure provides guidance for the
Preservation, Storage and Handling of Glass
Reinforced Plastic (GRP) pipes and Fittings.
Handling:
• Package Load:
Pipes 1400mm and smaller in diameter are
packaged as a unit. Packages may be handled using
a pair of slings as shown in (figure 2.1) Figure 2.3 (Lifting Pipe at Two Support Points)
• Handling Nested Pipes:
Nested group pipes refer to a method of
organizing and packing pipes in which smaller
pipes are placed inside larger once. Nested group
pipes are typically sorted and grouped based on
their size, with smaller pipes nested inside larger
ones to form groups. These pipes generally have
special packing and it require mutually
agreement between supplier and customer.
Figure 2.1(Lifting Pipe Package) Regardless the following general procedure
• Single Pipes: should always be followed.

Single pipes must be loaded and handled separately

(one at a time). Use pliable straps, Slings, or ropes to
lift single pipes. Do not use steel cables or chains to
lift or transport the pipe. Pipe sections can be lifted
with only one support point (Figure 2.2) although
two support points placed as in (Figure 2.3) make the
pipe easier to control. Do not lift pipe by passing a
rope through the section end to end.
Figure 2.6 (Double Support Point)
• Fitting Load:
Fitting should be supported along their entire
length during transportation, Storage, and
handling. Blocking or wood should be used to
prevent fitting from rolling or moving during
transportation.
Fitting should be properly secured to prevent
movement during transportation. Strapping or
binding with appropriate material such as nylon

webbing may be used.
