Block Masonary
Works
1.0 AIM

The objective of this method statement is to define the inspection activities and execution works
related to Block Mansonry Works.

2.0 SCOPE

This method statement covers working methodology, inspection and quality monitoring of
masonery works under the scope of project specification.

3.0 SPECIFICATIONS, CODES & STANDARDS

Works will be in accordance with approved proposed drawings and Construction Standards and
applicable codes and standards.

4.0 RESPONSIBILITY

Project Manager shall be responsible for the execution of this procedure and to ensure that works
are undertaken in a safe manner, to the requisite quality and to the agreed timescale.

QA / QC Manager shall be responsible for the implementation of this procedure. He shall assign
a competent QA/QC Inspector to perform / supervise any inspections and tests required.

HSE Manager shall be responsible for the implementation of safety procedures on site. He shall
assign a Safety Officer to ensure that the works proceed in accordance with procedures and that
works are undertaken in a safe and proper manner and are compliant with good working practices.

Equipment Supervisor shall be responsible for the maintenance of plant, equipment and tools and
that they are correctly certified and fit for use.

5.0 EXECUTION METHODOLOGY FOR BLOCK MASONRY WOKRS.

 All construction activities for block Masonrycan be summarized as following:

5.1 UNLOADING OF BLOCKS

 Upon arrival of materials to site, a storage area will be provided, a space in which it will not create
obstruction to any other working equipment nearby.
 Put in place a resting timber below before piling the blocks.
 Unloading shall be carried out using forklift or manually.
 From the delivery truck, Workers will transfer the block or,forklift will carry the timber box slowly to
designated storage area.
 Continue until blocks are completely unloaded.

5.2 MATERIAL HANDLING AND STORAGE

 Blocks shall be stored on pallets and be on firm level ground away from areas of high traffic or
where mud splashes may occur to prevent contamination and to keep blocks clean. If pallets are
not used then blocks shall be stored on planks free from contact with the ground within a level
area.
 Blocks to be stored as near as possible to the place of work, keeping rehandling to a minimum.
 Clean sand shall be stockpiled on sheeting and covered with the same material or polythene
sheeting so that inclusion of foreign materials is prevented.
 Cement bag to be O.P.C. bagged and kept dry prior to use.

5.3 SETTING OUT

 Before Setting, check/Verify location of opening as per latest revised drawing.

 Check vertical and horizontal gauging with dry run or gauge staff.
 Care must be taken to ensure accuracy of initial setting out and it is important to maintain uniformity
of joint thickness and alignment of vertical joints.
 When setting out masonry, care should be taken to reduce the cutting of masonry units to a
minimum and to avoid irregular or broken bond, particularly at openings or piers.

5.4 MORTOR

 Mortar must have sufficient strength, be durable, resist rain penetration as much as possible and
yet be flexible enough to accommodate slight movement within the wall.
 Mortar should be “buttery” rather than a fluid texture with just sufficient water added to provide
workability.
 One part of Ordinary Portland Cement and three parts of Washed Sand or as required by engineer.
 One bag mix will be adopted with measuring box for sand to ensure compliance with the mix
design.
 Mortar to be covered to prevent excessive evaporation.

5.5 LAYING CUTING AND JOINTING

 Concrete surface that will receive block work shall be scrabbled/roughened to remove laitance and
be clean prior to the laying of mortar and blocks.
 Blocks to be adequately wetted with water before they are laid in place. Tops of walls left off from
the previous day’s work are to be wetted before the new work commences.
 Only undamaged blocks are to be used.
 All bed and vertical joints are to be spread with mortar to ensure complete and solid bedding
through the full thickness of the wall.
 Mortar extending into the cavities of hollow blocks which are to be reinforced and filled shall be
removed
 Each block is to be adjusted to its final position in the wall whilst the mortar is still plastic. Any block
which is moved after the mortar has stiffened shall be removed and re-laid with fresh mortar.
 Half blocks and cutting of blocks is permitted where necessary to achieve correct bond.
 Cutting of CMU’s to be with table saw with wet cutting disk or other approved method to prevent
damage to blocks.
 All perpends, quoins and joints are to be kept true and square, other angles are to be plumbed and
bed joints leveled as the works proceed.
 Work to be carried out course by course not leaving any part more than 800mm lower than the
other. Work which is left at different levels is to be racked back.
 Care to be taken to avoid mortar smearing or staining of any sort.
 Ensure sufficient labor and materials are available to ensure that the application is continuous.
 All joints to be tooled where possible as this compacts the joint, increasing the weather resistance
and reducing mortar shrinkage.

5.6 OPENINGS, REINFORCEMENT, CONTROL JOINTS & FITTINGS

 Openings for doors, windows, louvers to be square and the jambs vertical and formed with uncut
faces of the block.
 Sills and lintels shall be provided as shown on the construction drawings.
 Reinforcement of sills, lintels and jambs to be provided as shown on the construction drawings.
 Vertical reinforcement to be provided as shown on the construction drawings.
 Any grouting to hollow blocks as shown on the construction drawings shall be with an approved
concrete design mix.
 Masonry walls or partitions are to be bonded together or tied to one another at junctions, unless
movement joints are specified, all as detailed on the construction drawings.
 All connections between masonry walls or partitions to concrete or steel columns are to be
reinforced as shown on the construction drawings.
 Reinforced masonry walls are to fully extend to the underside of slabs.
 Non load bearing masonry walls shall be built up to leave a 20mm joint between the top of the wall
and to the underside of a slab, which will be filled with an approved expansion board.
 Bond beams or bed joint reinforcement as specified on the construction drawings are used to
control stresses and shrinkage induced in masonry walls. Bed joint reinforcement is to be placed
every 3 courses of blockwork, care being taken to ensure that the reinforcement is fully bedded in
mortar to ensure adhesion between blocks is maintained.
 Movement control joints shall be provided as shown on the construction drawings.
 Where fixing blocks, anchors, accessories, wall ties etc. are specified, these to be built into the
walls or partitions and solidly bedded in mortar Fixings not built in are to be drilled or shot fired
(hilti-gun also refer to manufacturers manual) to the blockwork. Expanded bolt fixings are to be
drilled into the solid blocks or blocks having their cavities filled solid.

5.7 CURING AND CLEANING DOWN

 All newly or partially built walls are to be protected against drying out too rapidly by covering with
hessian or other approved material which is to be kept wet for a minimum period of 3 days.
 All excess or hardened mortar and chips of blocks shall be collected and disposed off on a daily
basis.
 Tools and equipment shall be cleaned and arranged properly after a days work.
 If any general dirt or grime exists on the blockwork then the use of an approved mild detergent will
be used.

6.0 TOOLS AND EQUIPMENTS

 Mobile Crane (for shifting of Blocks)

 Forklift (Unloading of blocks)
 Material Basket
 One bag mortar mixer
 Wheel barrow
 Measuring box for sand
 Shovels
 Hand tools
 Hilti gun
