Chapter 1
Introduction
Study habit is an action such as reading, taking notes, holding study groups which the students
perform regularly and habitually in order to accomplish the task of learning. Study habits can be
described as effective or ineffective depending upon whether or not they serve the students well.
Study habits are generally critical to success in schools and considered vital for obtaining good
grades. A good study habit can increase the confidence and self-esteem of students.
According to Loveless, (2017) the key to becoming an effective student is learning how to study.
Study habits, help students to study effectively and make studying easier to understand. Academic
performance is one of the main yardstick used to evaluate the quality of education in any institution.
It generally refers to how well a student is accomplishing his or her academic tasks and studies.
However, quite a few factors determine the level and quality of accomplishment. Sometimes, a
student may spend a lot of time in studying, but he/she may not be successful in attaining desired
effects or good results. This may be due to the poor development of study skills or other factors.
Academic performance are linked to difference in intelligence and personality, but students who
succeed in school have a study technique that had worked out for them. This study will occur in
Camp Vicente Lim Integrated School to determine the relationship of study habits and academic
performances of grade 10 students. The aim of this study is to know the level of study habits of
grade 10 students and how it relates on their academic performances. Previous studies have shown
that good study habit including maximizing the efficiency at which students learn new information by
listening during a lecture or reading through coursework the following study habits can be
recommended: Studying without background noise, regular revisions, turning off the TV, radio, and
Thus, it means there are the right and wrong forms of study. This includes being punctual to
class, finishing your assignment as wells as homework, getting to the lessons earlier, participating in
class, spending extra minutes at home working out things, seeking teacher’s counsel. Therefore, the
researchers made an intervention in this research to address the current high rates of departures of

student away from good studying habits. The condition is such that the greater number of students
fail to make serious efforts at any level, which could be considered as reasonable in a career
perspective. This study would shed light on the probable effects of diverse study strategies on the
students. Somehow, these kinds of children would fail to learn proper reading skills simply because
their parents, by chance, are uninterested in the child’s education, are not able, and do not bother
about teaching the child. Their parents are viewed as having a poor reading culture hence they
themselves become lazy learners. Children are said to imitate and learn by observing.
Theoretical Framework
This study is based on social cognitive theory propounded by Albert Bandura as early as in
the 1960s.
Social cognitive theory strongly lays emphasis on one's cognition. It suggests that the mind
is an active force that constructs one's reality selectively, encodes information, performs behavior on
the basis of values and expectations and impose structure on its own actions. It is through an
understanding of the processes involved in one's construction of reality that enables human
behavior to be understood, predicted and changed. In view of the theory, the student's academic

Study habits have always been a part of a student’s day-to-day experiences in studying.
They are practices that could allow a learner to somehow gain interest while studying without having
to feel pressured or bothered. Study habits are one of the most important determinants of a
On the other hand, the student’s academic performance serves as another variable to
determine a student’s overall achievements, grades, or academic progress across different courses.
Academic performance refers to how poorly or satisfactorily a student performs in the respective
courses that they are enrolled in. Thus, academic performance is the primary indicator of a quality
learning experience in every school setting, particularly in higher institutions (Magulod, 2019).
Study habits are termed as the methods of study of students. Study habits are student’s
ways of studying whether systematic, efficient or inefficient (Ayodele & Adebiyi, 2013) implying that
efficient study habits produces positive academic performance while inefficient study habits leads to
academic failure.
The concept of study habits focuses on the student's performance in school. It is the
students' hard work and effort to achieve better academic performance in their studies. Study habits
are part of a student's everyday life in school. It contributes significantly to the development of
knowledge and perceptual capacities. Study habits tell a person how much he will learn, how far he
wants to go, and how much he wants to earn. These all could be decided with one's study habits
academic achievement of students. The main objective of the study was to assess the self-concept,
study habits and their relationship to performance outcomes. The results of the study showed
a significant correlation between self-concept, study habits and academic achievement of students.

internet, television, cellphones, and even friends are especially prevalent in this generation.
In a study conducted by Cuaresma, Bautista, and Santos (2023) on senior high school
students amidst blended learning, it was found that study habits significantly impact academic
performance. The researchers recommended holding seminars about forming good study habits or
administering diagnostic tests to help students determine what study habits are effective for them.
According to Dano (2017), entering the world of work is through a college education. Fitting
education to nursing students' learning style and study habits would help master students and
Tus (2020) highlighted that students are still improving their learning attitudes and study

Related Studies
A great deal of research has provided evidence that good study habits improve academic
performance of students (Cerna, et. al, 2015). A study by Cerna et al, used a self-reported study
Shanghai. It was a qualitative study. Study habit indicators employed in the study were; reading
materials, class content and feedback on assignments, note-taking, study times and preparing for
examinations. Among the aspects, the findings revealed that high performing students practice
punctuality and regularity to classes, submit homework and assignment on time, take notes and
Further, Yazdani and Godbole (2014) investigated the role of study habits and motivation in
improving students’ academic performance with 400 students from Hyderabad. The study adopted
the study inventory by Palsane for data collection. Study habit indicators used include; budget time

Furthermore, Siahi and Maiyo (2015) investigated the relationship between study habits and
academic achievement of Spicer higher school students in India. A survey research design was
employed for the study. Study habits inventory developed by Palsane was used in the collection of
data. Study habit indicators used include; budget time allocation for studying, physical condition for
studying, reading ability, note –taking and preparing for examinations. Students’ examination
records was used to measure academic performance. Data was analysed using Pearson product
moment correlation coefficient. The findings of the study revealed a positive relationship between
study habits and academic achievement. Finally, Jafari et al. (2019) carried out a cross-sectional
study using 380 medical science students from Kermanshah University in Iran to investigate the
relationship between study habits and academic achievement of medical sciences students. A study
habit inventory developed by Palsane and Sharma was used to collect data. Data was analysed
using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that there was a direct relationship
between study habits and students’ academic performance. Although the studies reviewed were
conducted at different context with different groups of students, the findings revealed that, study
habits significantly impact academic performance of students. Based on the literature reviewed, the
statistically significant relationship between study habits and academic performance of pupils.
Further, the studies reviewed showed that, all the samples were drawn from universities and
secondary schools. This study used samples from the junior high school to fill the gap. Again, most
of studies adopted the Palsane study habit inventory, but this study adopted a local study inventory
developed by Essuman in 2006. Besides, there was relatively nothing on implications for
educational practice to effectively engage counsellors and teachers on how to assist pupils to
SYNTHESIS
The combined insights from diverse international and local studies underscore the pivotal role of
study habits in determining students' academic success. Across various educational contexts,
studies consistently demonstrate a strong correlation between effective study habits and improved
academic performance. Emphasizing factors like regularity in class attendance, timely submission of
assignments, note-taking, time allocation, and motivation, these habits significantly impact student
achievement. Additionally, research highlights the direct relationship between study habits and
academic success, irrespective of gender. While most studies have primarily focused on higher
education settings, recent inquiries are extending these investigations to encompass junior high
Notably, the studies advocate for the integration of study habit skills in educational practices and
propose the involvement of counselors and teachers in guiding and supporting students to cultivate
effective study habits, thereby enhancing their academic performance and learning outcomes
