Connected Discourse
It is also known as ‘Connected Speech’, is spoken language that is used in
continuous sequence of sounds, just like a normal conversation. As observed, there is
often a significant difference between the way words are pronounced in isolation and the
way they are pronounced in the context of connected speech (grammar.about.com.)
- relatively long and integrated unit of language, such as a written argument or spoken
conversation. (APA Dictionary of Psychology)
1
Written text is formed from spontaneous discreteness that predetermined its
connectedness.
A text is a connected discourse, which means that all ideas in the text must be related
in the sense that they would express only one main idea, or that the text must have unity by
combining all ideas to emphasize central idea.
One of the characteristics of connected speech is the deletion or clipping of sounds that
occurs when words run together. For example, “want to” can become “wanna”, “going to”
can become “gonna”, “rock and roll’ can become “em” or “dem” in connected speech.
MISSION 1

your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

Proverbs 15:1. A soft answer turneth away wrath but grievous words stir up
anger.
What is a Text?
“Text in general are self-contained, well-formed, hang together (cohesive), make
sense (coherent) have a clear communicative purpose, recognizable text types,
appropriate to their contexts of use.” (2)
What is a Discourse?
– Originally the word “Discourse” comes from Latin word “Discursus” Which denoted
conversation argument or speech.
– It is a text with distinct features and purpose
– It is a formal and often lengthy discussion of a topic where concepts and insights are
arranged in an organized and logical manner
– A discourse is an extended expression of thoughts or ideas.

henceforth, language contains a linear sequence. The linear progression of text creates a
context of meaning- e “with” the text.
Surface Text – It refers to the set of expressions actually used to make some knowledge
explicit. Also, these are the exact words that people see or hear.
Deep text – It occurs during processing, leaving other knowledge implicit. A deep structure of
sentence is an abstract representation that allows the native speaker of a language to know
what the sentence means.
Texture – It is the basis of unity and semantic interdependence within a text, according to
Crane (1994). He also added, that any written text that lacks texture would simply be a bunch
of isolated sentences that have no relationship to each other
Transformation functions as a link between deep structure of sentences and their surface
structures. For example
Surface structure:
1. Visiting doctors can be nuisance.
2. “I bought colourful clothes”.
This is a surface structure representing a more detailed and elaborates experience.
Deep Structure:
2. “My spouse’s parents treat my children differently because they are handicapped”
“Treat my children” is a vague expression that could mean different things. It could mean:
Also the actual action that is being termed as “different treatment” can represent different
deep structures.
Example:
Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain but a woman feareth the LORD she shall be
praised. Proverbs 31:30
The sample text gives as idea that a woman who feareth the LORD shall be
praised. This idea is considered a discourse. However, In the line “Favour is deceitful” and
“Beauty is vain” are contradictory to a woman who feareth the LORD shall be praised but
then, these ideas relate or connected to one another that makes it more understandable.
