Global Practice
The United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) was founded on December 12, 1974, and
has a long history. It was the outcome of the union of two important Philippine Institute of
Architects (PIA) and League of Philippine Architects (LPA) organizations. A more cohesive
professional body that could better meet the requirements of Filipino architects was the main
goal of this merger.
The UAP has been instrumental in advancing the professional regulation of architecture
in the Philippines ever since its founding. It actively participates in the creation and application
of laws and rules governing the architectural industry, assuring high ethical and professional
standards. When standards are made so as integrating values are important. These values are the
foundation of creating a long-lasting community that foster the growth of every individual
architects here in the Philippines.
As the next generation of architects, we should reflect on these values and incorporate
them into our professional journey. By upholding professionalism, striving for excellence,
embracing collaboration, fostering innovation, advocating for the profession, valuing cultural
preservation, and committing to lifelong learning, we can contribute to the growth and
development of the architectural field. These values not only shape our individual practices but
also shape the collective impact we can have on the built environment and society as a whole.
Through these values, we can continue the legacy of the UAP and pave the way for a bright
future for architecture.
Architectural education encompasses a range of values that shape the next generation of
architects. Design thinking and creativity are highly emphasized, encouraging students to explore
innovative solutions and challenge conventional practices. This nurtures their ability to think
critically and solve complex problems, enabling them to create spaces that are both functional
and meaningful.
Another key value in architectural education is sustainability and environmental
stewardship. Students are taught to consider the environmental impact of their design decisions
and are encouraged to integrate principles of energy efficiency, resource conservation, and the
use of sustainable materials. This focus on sustainability aims to minimize the ecological
footprint of buildings and contribute to a more sustainable future.
Architectural education also recognizes the social responsibility of architects as agents of
change and community builders. Students are encouraged to engage with communities,
understand their needs, and design spaces that are inclusive, accessible, and responsive to social,
cultural, and economic contexts. By promoting social responsibility, architectural education
instills an ethical mindset and emphasizes the role of architecture in promoting social equity.
These values are interconnected and mutually reinforcing. Design thinking and creativity
enable architects to find innovative solutions that incorporate sustainability and address social
needs. Sustainability, in turn, supports the long-term viability of designs and contributes to the
well-being of both the environment and communities. Social responsibility ensures that
architects consider the broader impact of their work and actively engage with communities to
create spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also serve the needs of diverse
populations.
Together, these values form the foundation of architectural education, shaping the next
generation of architects who will approach their profession with a holistic understanding of
design, sustainability, and social responsibility.
