This type of printmaking started in China and was adapted in
Japan in 1600s. First, the pattern is carved on a wood block. The
cut areas will show "white" (the color of the paper). The areas left
untouched will show "black" (or any color) at the original surface
level.
4. Origami and Kirigami
Origami is the art of paper folding. The goal is to transform a flat
sheet of square paper into a finished sculpture through folding
techniques. Kirigami, on the other hand, is a variation of origami. It
includes not only folding, but also cutting paper.

5. Dolls
There are various types of traditional dolls, some representing
babies, warriors, fairy tale characters, etc. They are made for the
shrines, for gift giving, and for festival celebrations.
6. Manga and Anime
Manga (Japanese comics) and anime (Japanese animation) are known worldwide. They
originated in the mid- 1990s and their popularity has led to the
establishment of many related attractions, For example, Manga
cafes can be found at major city centers and the world's largest
comic events are held annually in Tokyo. Anime and Manga are

considered to be among the famous art forms in the 21st century. These art forms are
known for their dynamic plots and remarkable characters. Both of these art forms have
gained immense fan base worldwide.

7. Masks
Masks are part of Japanese culture. They have existed over the
centuries to celebrate ancient gods and now are used in theatre for
entertainment, especially in Noh drama.

8. Bamboo Craft
Works of woven bamboo are among the important traditional
crafts of Japan. They are made into everyday objects such as
baskets, lamps, cages, chimes, etc.

9. Lacquerware
Japanese lacquerware is used from Buddha statues to Bento boxes
for food. This craft has been introduced from China but later has
become distinctly Japanese because of the unique designs and the
development of technology.

What are the Accessories and Body Ornaments of Japan?

Ancient Japanese culture favored simplicity. They did not
wear lots of jewelry nor did they wear complicated makeup.
However, they allowed certain body ornaments for display. Like
the Chinese, the Japanese women wore long black hair as a means
of expressing their style. For instance, they used hair accessories
such as stickpins, combs, bands made of ivory, tortoise shell,
wood, silver, etc. Flowers were also worn to contrast with their black hair.
Like the Chinese, they valued clean, pale faces. They wore
thick white makeup, plucked and shaped their eyebrows, and used
red lip paint to make their mouth look small. Geishas (female

entertainers) were especially concerned about makeup. Makeup also played an important
part in theater. Many of these traditions continue today.

What is the Architecture of Japan?

The Japanese style of architecture is similar to Chinese architecture and easy to
spot, it is typified by a tiled or thatch roof that curves upward at the ends. The roof is the
dominant feature often occupying one half of the building.

A traditional h

size of the rooms to change and making them multifunctional. Tatami mats (rice straw
mats) cover the floors. Bamboo is used for decorative and functional purposes: for blinds,
ceilings, rafters, and ikebana (flower arrangement) containers. Decoration and furnishing
are minimal, favoring natural materials such as fine wood, bamboo, silk, rice straw mats,
and paper shoji screens.

What is the Sculpture in Japan?

MAPEH 8 23
CHILDREN OF FATIMA SCHOOL, INC.

Ancient Japanese sculpture was strongly influenced by

Chinese sculpture, receiving it in the 5th century. Later, it was
influenced by the Western world when Japan opened its doors
to the outside world in the 19th century.
Most ancient sculptures centered on Buddhism and the
animistic rites of Shintoism, the national religion. Traditional
materials used were metal, especially bronze, wood, which
was often lacquered, gilded or brightly painted.
Since the 1970s, Japanese sculpture has provided Western sculptors inspiration
which focuses on the environment and a return to native artistic principles and form.
Outdoor sculpture became popular and widely used in the 1970s. Cities supported outdoor
sculpture for parks and plazas, and architects included sculptures in their building plans.

LESSON PROPER

What are the arts of Korea all about?

In ancient times, Korea provided a cultural bridge between China and Japan,
because of its location. As a result, Korean art was strongly influenced by both countries.
Like its neighbors, it used the same motifs, techniques, and forms. Nevertheless, Korean
artists developed a distinctive style that could be identified as their own.
Korean art is both traditional and realistic. A main feature of the art is that it follows
naturalism- the practice of accepting nature as it is, simple and not elaborate. This has
already been evident as early as the favored, for instance, the beauty of raw materials, such

as the natural pattern of wood grains. The subjects are realistic landscapes, flowers, and
birds painted on silk or mulberry paper.

or mulberry paper

What is the attire of Koreans?

The hanbok is the traditional clothing of South
Koreans. In North Korea, it is called Jaseon-ot. It is a long-
sleeved gown with a high waistline for women.
Men usually wear baggy pants with long jackets or
vests. They also wear different headgears for different
seasons and varied occasions. For instance, the hwagwan is a
type of coronet worn by women for traditional ceremonies
such as weddings.

What are the fabrics and tapestries in Korea?

Korean fabrics have a long history that includes
producing native fabrics and also Korean-made jacquard,
brocade, and satin. Korean quilt known as bojagi is a wrapping
cloth made from a variety of materials, such as silk and ramie. It
is usually a square piece and is embroidered. Bojagi has many
uses, including gift wrappers, food coverings, and knapsacks.
Korean tapestries have many uses: as wall hangings, bed
covers, room dividers, carpet, etc. They come in different
materials, from yarn to silk.

What are the Arts and Crafts in Korea?

MAPEH 8 33
CHILDREN OF FATIMA SCHOOL, INC.
Junior High School Department

The arts and crafts of Korea are the following:

1. Calligraphy
Korean calligraphy, an ancient tradition, was derived from
Chinese calligraphy. Chinese characters were first used in Korean
calligraphy but later on, modern Korean calligraphy used its own
native alphabet.

2. Ceramic
The use of earthenware in Korea stretches back from the
Neolithic period, Today, Korean pottery attracts international
collectors.

3. Korean Knots
Korean knotting is a traditional craft in Korea. It differs from
the Chinese knots in the method of braiding. The knots were once
used for hunting but later used for decorative purposes.

4. Clay Dolls
Clay dolls are art treasures made during the Silla dynasty.

5. Papermaking
Papermaking is a traditional art form in Korea. It includes the
process of making paper from the mulberry tree bark.

6. Inlaid Items
Household furniture and everyday objects are inlaid with
mother-of-pearl or ox horn.

7. Jade Carvings

MAPEH 8 34
CHILDREN OF FATIMA SCHOOL, INC.
Junior High School Department

This craft dates back to the archaeological finds of the Neolithic Period (about
10,000 B.C.). During the ancient times, jade accessories were worn by the upper class of
society, especially women. The popular motifs were Buddhist images and peanut-shaped
good-luck charms.

8. Chaissang (Bamboo Craft)

Chaissang is the traditional art of weaving colored bamboo
strips into baskets and boxes.

9. Folk Painting
Folk painting in Korea is called minhwa. It portrays the people's
way of expressing and revealing their thoughts and ideas.

What are the Accessories and Body Ornaments in Korea?

In ancient Korea, personal ornaments were meant
not only to enhance one's beauty but also to bring good
fortune. Women wore hairpins and other accessories on
their hair. They also wore brooches on their hanboks.
Earrings were worn by both men and women during the
time of the Three Kingdoms.

What is the Architecture in Korea?

Korean architecture is characterized by its
simplicity, economy of shape, naturalistic tendencies,
and avoidance of extremes. Unlike the sharply curving
Chinese roof, the Korean roof is gently sloping. Korean
architecture also avoids strong lines, steep planes. and
garish colors. Nevertheless, the main structural
elements and techniques still show Chinese and
Japanese influences.
The Three Kingdoms of Silla, Kogurya, and
Baekje dynasties (57 B.C.-668 A.D.) suggest evidence of
three temple sites (about 5th or 6th century). The wood
and stone pagodas were built with added architectural

ornamentation such as roof decorations with floral and animal designs. The unified Silla
Period produced many granite pagodas.

Traditional Korean architecture is quite similar

to Tang (Chinese) architecture. It is characterized by
brackets that project above the heads of capitals of
columns.
Many large buildings are preserved from the
Choson Period(1392-1910). The largest wooden
building, Chongyo, the royal ancestral shrine, was built
Chongmyo, the royal ancestral

shrine
Western art began to be felt during the last years of the 19th century. This was the
time when western style buildings were built. European furnishings were used and a glass
door was introduced, and in 1900, electric lamps were installed.
Today, a new generation of Korean architects have appeared and been given by the
government the freedom and financing to design a distinct style of Korean architecture.
These architects were trained in Europe, Canada, and South America. They saw the need
for nationalistic architectural elements to be redefined. Modern public buildings appeared
more in the New York/Chicago style than in the London/ Paris trend.
However, the country was slow in removing old traditions and moving to modern
architecture. Much of the growth came from commercial buildings such as retail stores,
bistros, and coffee shops.
What is Korean’s Sculpture?
Ancient Korean sculptures were generally made of wood,
stone, and later ceramic. Smaller ones were made of jade, gold, and
other metals. Sculpture at that time was dominated by Buddhist
themes. Korean art produced great Buddhist sculptures.
Even today, Buddhist sculpture remains an important form
of Korean art. Non- Buddhist sculpture includes materials such as
metal (bronze, stainless steel, etc.), Stone (marble, granite, etc.), and
synthetic resins (PVC, polycarbonate, etc.). Recently, Sculptors have
been combining materials in their work.
The Greeting man is an example of Korean modern sculpture.
Its main artist is Yu Young-ho. The statue of the man (6 meters high)
bows typically in the Asian greeting gesture. Its blue color
symbolizes lack of prejudice.
