LESSON PROPER

How do we progress in our fitness level?

The journey to fitness is not just a snap of your fingers which you can achieve with
just little effort and discipline. Your fitness expedition will contain preparation through
procedures, as you progress in better understanding of your body.

MAPEH 8 2
CHILDREN OF FATIMA SCHOOL, INC.
Junior High School Department

To progress in fitness, one needs to have a fitness goal that is wisely set. This means
that it should be a real perceptible goal which you can really achieve within a period of
time.
What are the reasons or barriers why people do not have progress in fitness?
The following are the reasons why one does not
progress in fitness even if he/she tries hard to do it:
1. A person does not have goals.
2. No schedule set for training.
3. Improper diet associated with exercise.
4. No monitoring of progress.
How can we progress in fitness and in health?
The following are the recommendations to progress in fitness and in health and
achieve fitness goals:
1. Make exercise a part of your habit.
2. Set reachable goals.
3. Support exercise routine with healthy lifestyle.
4. Get a workout partner
5. Make sure that you have time to work out even
on your rest day.

Now that we know all of the things that we need to do in order to progress in fitness, We
need to assess again the other components of physical fitness. This can either be health-
related or skill-related which we can use in participation to other team sports, or it may be
used on our daily activities.

What is physical fitness?

We are all aware that fitness is essential in every activity that we do, but what is
physical fitness? Physical Fitness is the ability of each individual to do his/her daily task
efficiently and comfortably without experiencing fatigue and have some reserves in
emergency situations.

What are the components of physical fitness?

1. Agility is the ability to move and change

direction and position of the body quickly
and effectively with controlled movement.

2. Coordination is the linking of senses

through the brain to the different parts of
the body to produce a smooth, quick, and
efficiently-controlled movement and exact
execution of the skill, like blocking in
volleyball.

3. Power is the ability to exert maximum

force very quickly, like the initial take-off
from sprinting and baseball batting.

MAPEH 8 4

How are fitness components assessed?

The following activities can be used to assess the components of physical fitness.

1. Agility: Shuttle Run

Purpose: To test the speed and agility of the performer
Equipment Required: wooden blocks, stopwatch,
tape measure and non-hazardous surface.
Procedure: As fast as possible, run back and forth
between two parallel lines in 30 feet markings where
two wooden blocks or similar objects are placed
behind them. Start the shuttle run at the opposite side of the blocks when you hear the
"GO" signal.
Scoring: Record the shortest time performed after two trials.
You can watch it on this link: https://youtu.be/Zcj_xdwLnNc
2. Coordination: Alternate Hand Wall Toss
Purpose: To measure the hand-eye coordination
Equipment Required: tennis ball, smooth solid wall, and
a stopwatch
Procedure: Mark a 2 to 3 feet distance from the wall. The
performer will stand behind the specified distance facing
the wall. Throw the ball underarm with one hand against
the wall and catch it with the other hand. Continue this process within 30 seconds.
Scoring: Record the number of catches in a 30-second period.
You can watch it on this link: https://youtu.be/6q8m6vne6fI
3. Power: Standing Long Jump
Purpose: To measure the power of the legs
Equipment Required: tape measure, non-slip surface or
floor, clearly marked take-off
Procedure: The jumper will stand behind the take-off
line. A two-foot take-off and landing is required with the

In case that both teams reach 24 points or a score of 24-24, the play is continued
until a two-point lead is achieved.
What are the different facilities and equipment used in volleyball?
A. The playing court
The playing area includes the playing court and the free zone. It should be
rectangular and symmetrical. A playing court is a rectangular shape of 18 x 9 meters
surrounded by the free zone of at least 3 meters wide.
1. Center Line - divides the playing court into two equal courts of 9 x 9 meters each.
2. Attack Line - it is the front partition of each court measuring 3 meters from the
center line until the next line of the court. It is also known as the front zone.
3. Back Zone – it is the second partition of the playing court measuring 6 meters
between the front zone end line and the service line.
4. Service Zone - it is a 9-meter wide area behind each end line.

В. The Net and Post

The post is placed vertically in the center line where the net is placed and tied in the
post. The height of the net on its top is 2.43 m for men and 2.24 m for women.

C. The Ball
The ball is a spherical shape of a flexible leather or synthetic
leather with a bladder inside made up of rubber or similar
material. Its circumference is 65-67 cm and weighing about
260-280 grams.
What are the basic skills in volleyball?
The following are the basic skills used in volleyball:
Serve - it is the act of putting the ball in
play by hitting the ball in an underhand or
overhand technique toward the opponent's
courtside. These are the types of service:
 Underhand serve - it is the act of
serving the ball by hitting it below
the waist level instead of tossing it
up and striking over the head level.

 Overhead serve - it is the act of

serving the ball by tossing it
overhead and striking it above the
head level.

MAPEH 8 14
CHILDREN OF FATIMA SCHOOL, INC.
Junior High School Department

Pass- it is an attempt to properly handle the

opponent's service or attack. It is also called
reception.

Dig - it is the ability of stopping the ball

from touching the court's ground after an
attack or strike.

Block – the process of preventing the

opponent’s attempt to strike or attack.

Set - the act of putting the ball into a

position that the attacker can strike the ball
hard towards the opponent's court.

MAPEH 8 15

BASEBALL
What is the nature and background of baseball?
The History of Baseball
The game of baseball started in the early 19th
century. An Englishman named Alexander Cartwright
created the game in the year 1845 with the first set of rules.
In fact, many of the rules recorded then are still used in the
game.
Alexander Cartwright

In the early 20th century, the focus was more on

striking the home runs. Babe Ruth changed the path of the
game with his skills to achieve home runs. It was due to
Babe Ruth that baseball reached the levels of popularity. The
popularity of Babe Ruth also helped in improving the money
in the game, since people just went to watch Babe Ruth in
action.

Babe Ruth
Baseball is a strategic game of batting throughout the last part of the 20th century.
However, pitching and homerun hitting are the baseball standards of today. Depending on
the strength of their players and their home run batters, baseball teams are either big
losers or big winners.
What is the nature of the Game?
A baseball game is played by two teams who alternately played offensively and
defensively. There are nine players on each side. The goal is to score more runs than the
opponent, which is accomplished by one regular trip of four bases on the diamond.

What are the facilities and equipment used in baseball?

The following are the facilities and equipment used in the game:
Equipment Description
Gloves The first globe was made up of thin cloth and
only covers the palm. Now, there are different
Catcher Fielder
kinds of gloves. The catcher's mitt is big,
round, and padded. The first baseman's mitt is
longer than the other fielders' gloves, and an
outfielders' glove is larger than an infielders'
glove.

Bases

The first base used in baseball was too thick

that it always hurt the players. They replaced
it with rock but the players suffered from
injury. Today, the bases are made of sacks
filled with sand and other rubber bases.

Bats
In professional baseball, the only allowed bats
are wooden bats. The diameter should inches
and with the length of not be 2 2/4 more than
42 inches. White ass bat is used because it
absorbs shocks better than other kinds of
woods

Baseball
A baseball is made up of cork at the center
and wrapped with 120 yards of cotton and
219 wool yarn with the cover made up of two
cowhides that are stitched together. The ball
weighs about 5 to 5.25 ounces with 9 to 9.25
inch circumference.

What is Baseball Field Diagram?

The starting area of the action on the field is home plate, which is a five-sided white
rubber slab 17 inches by 8 1/2 by 12 by 12 by 8 1/2 inches. Next to each of the two
equivalent 8 1/2 inch sides is a batter's box. The point of home plate, where these are two
12 inch right angles, is at one corner of a ninety-foot square. The other three corners of the
square, in counterclockwise order from the home plate, are called first base, second base,
and third base. Three canvas bags fifteen inches (38 cm) square mark the three bases.

MAPEH 8 23
CHILDREN OF FATIMA SCHOOL, INC.
Junior High School Department

These three bags, along with the home plate, form the four bases at the corners of the
infield. The diagram shows the measurement of the diamond or baseball field.

What are the rules in baseball?

Each team in baseball starts with nine players.
The game is broken into nine innings, during which
each team plays both offense and defense. However, in
high school, regulated six- or seven-innings are applied
in the game. An inning begins with the home team on
defense and the other team on offense. The offensive
team tries to score runs, while the defensive team
prevents them from scoring by putting the player out.
One inning is completed after each team makes
three outs. The team that has the most number of home runs after nine innings is declared
as the winner. If the score is tied, the game continues until one dominates with one or more
points or runs.
What are the skills used in baseball?
The following are the skills used in baseball:
Skill Description

MAPEH 8 24
CHILDREN OF FATIMA SCHOOL, INC.
Junior High School Department

Catching
It is the ability to get the ball thrown to you.
The ability of the catcher to catch quickly
helps the catcher to prevent the opposing
player to advance to the next base.

Throwing/Pitching Throwing is one of the prerequisite skills of

a good defensive player. The ability to throw
precisely and fast will make it hard for the
opposition to score and advance runners.
Having the right throwing technique will
allow hitting of marks with better
steadiness.
Pitching is the ability to place the game in
play. It is performed by a pitcher, which is a
key player in baseball whose position is at
the center of the diamond.
Fielding
Good team fielding makes it hard for the
opposing team to score runs and gives the
pitcher and catcher self-confidence. It is
important to practice the basics of fielding a
ball hits along the ground and in the air, as
well as knowing where to throw the ball, A
good fielder should know where to throw
the ball when he has to.

MAPEH 8 25
CHILDREN OF FATIMA SCHOOL, INC.
Junior High School Department

Hitting
Hitting is the most entertaining part of the
game. It is hard to hit a ball with a round bat
if you are positioned into a limited space
and you have a split second to react to a
pitched ball. A good baseball batter needs
exceptional reaction time, coordination,
good hitting technique, and self-confidence.

Base Running
Sharp aggressive base running can put a lot
of pressure on the defensive team. Good
base running is about being fast and smart.
It is just as important to know and
understand the current game situation at all
times (including the number of outs and the
defensive team's fielding placements) as it is

protecting the injured part from additional damage.
 Rest - Allow the tissues time to heal.
 Ice - Putting on cold treatment to an acute injury lessens swelling and pain. Ice is a
vein constrictor. It causes the blood vessels to narrow and limits internal bleeding at
the injury site. Apply ice to the affected area every two hours for twenty minutes at
a time. Allow the skin temperature to go back to normal. You can put an ice to an
acute injury numerous times a day for three days.
