WEEKLY ACTIVITY SHEET

MATHEMATICS 7 – Quarter 2 – Week 1

MEASUREMENT

Name:__________________________________ Section:____________________

Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC):

- Approximates the measures of quantities particular length,

weight/mass, volume, time, angle, temperature and rate.

Objectives: At the end of the week, you will have:

a. identified the most common units used in measuring different objects;

b. converted Measures from one unit to another and
c. stated the importance of measurement in our daily lives.

Mathematical Concepts:

Different quantities require different units of measure and different

measuring devices. Accuracy of measurement depends on the skill of the
person doing the measuring and the precision of the measuring device.

 Length: the distance between the two ends of a line segment.

Meter (m) is the basic unit of length

Common Metric Unit of Length

Unit Relation to Length

Kilometer (km) 1000 m

Hectometer (hm) 100 m

Dekameter (dam) 10 m

Meter (m) 1m

Decimeter (dm) 0.1 m

Centimeter (cm) 0.01 m

Millimeter (mm) 0.001 m

Inches

Centimeters
 Width: The measurement or extent of something from side to side.

 Area: The extent or measurement of a surface. And the amount of

space that a figure encloses.

 Weight/Mass: Mass refers to the amount of matter in an object without

considering location, whereas Weight refers to the mass subjected to
gravitational attraction.
Gram (g) is the basic metric unit of weight.

Common Metric Unit of Mass

Unit Relation to Gram

Metric ton (t) 1000 kg
Kilograms (kg) 1000 g
Hectogram (hg) 100 g
Dekagram (dag) 10 g
Gram (g) 1g
Decigram (dg) 0.1 g
Centigram (cg) 0.01 g
Milligram (mg) 0.001 g

 Volume: the amount of space that a substance or object occupies, or
that is enclosed within a container, especially when great. The
common metric units of volume are cubic centimeters (cm3) and
cubic meter (m3). These units are obtained as the product of the
objects’ length, width and height (length x width x height).

 Temperature: the degree or intensity of heat present in a substance or

object, especially as expressed according to a comparative scale and
shown by a thermometer or perceived by touch. The units used in
measuring temperature are degree Celsius (℃), kelvin (K) and degree
Fahrenheit (℉).

 Time: a point of time as measured in hours, minutes and seconds

and others.

Unit Measure of Time and Their Equivalents

1 minute (min) = 60 seconds (s)
1 hour (hr) = 60 min.
1 day (d) = 24 hr
1 week (wk) = 7d
1 month (mo) = 30 d
1 year (yr) = 12 mo = 365 d = 52 wk
1 leap year = 366 d
1 decade = 10 yr
1 score = 20 yr
1 century = 100 yr
1 millenium (pl. millenia) = 1 000 yr

 Rate: a measure, quantity, or frequency, typically one measured

against some other quantity or measure.
 Angle: the space (usually measured in degrees) between two
intersecting lines or surfaces at or close to the point where they meet.

Activity 1:
These are the most common measurements: Millimeters (mm);
Centimeters (cm); Meters (m); Kilometers (km). Small units of length are
called millimeters.
A. Choose the most realistic measure of the length for each of the given object.
Example: Length of a paper = cm
A B
1. Length of a ballpeen = _______ 6. The area of a front cover
of a book = _______
2. Length of a curtain material = 7. The total area of a big
_______ estate/farm = _______

3. Thickness of a glass = _______ 8. The floor area of a
small house = _______
4. Width of a blackboard = 9. The surface area of a
_______ microchip = _______
5. Width of a street = _______ 10. The surface area of a
blackboard = _______
C D
11. a water bucket = _______ 16. a pencil = _______
12. a cup of coffee = _______ 17 a pail of water = _______
13. a tablespoon = _______ 18. a glass of milk = _______
14. a glass of juice = _______ 19. a basketball = _______
15. a can of gasoline = _______ 20. a piece of bond paper = ____

Discussions: Conversion
- A conversion is defined as an exchange from one unit of measure to
another.
Steps of Conversion
1. Write the conversion as a fraction (that equals one)
2. Multiply it out (leaving all units in the answer)
3. Cancel any units that are both and button.

An example of converting kilometers to miles…

 To convert square centimeter is equal to 100 square millimeters. To

convert square cm to square mm, multiply cm value by 100.

for example:
To convert 10 cm2 to mm2, multiply 10 by 100, that makes mm2 is 10cm2

square mm=square cm*100

 To convert square mm to square cm.

1 square mm is equal to 0.01 square cm. to convert mm to square cm
multiply
The square mm value by 0.01 or divide by 100.

Square mm to square cm formula

 Square cm=square mm *100
 Square cm=square/100

Activity 2:

Convert the following:

1. 2 km to m =

2. 80 mm to m =

3. 8.75m to km =

4. 2650 m to km =

5. 275 km to m =

6. 0.05cm2 to mm2 =

7. 1.87 m2 to cm2 =

8. 610 dam2 to km2 =

9. 0.398 km2 to m2 =
