SEAA2922 WASTEWATER ENGINEERING

Project (20%)

On 31st October 2023, Reliefweb posted a press release stating that heavy rainfall since 27th October 2023 has
caused floods in the northern part of Peninsular Malaysia, leading to the evacuation of residents from their
homes (Figure 1). The number of evacuees, particularly in Hilir Perak district, has reached 312 people (Figure 2)
and is expected to rise. The number is soon to achieve the maximum capacity of the Teluk Intan Municipal Hall
evacuation center, i.e., 400 people. Worst yet, wastewater treatment plant receiving wastewater from Teluk Intan
Municipal Hall is covered in flood water. As part of the flood emergency response team, you are assigned to solve
the wastewater issue (C3) in the evacuation center by designing a makeshift mobile wastewater treatment plant
(C5).

Figure 1: Press release of ReliefWeb with regards to heavy rainfall in Malaysia.

Figure 2: The number of flood victim in the relief centres.

For this you are required to: -

1. Describe (C1) the wastewater parameters of concern involved together with their respective pollution
load to be treated.
2. Explain (C2) the concept of the proposed makeshift wastewater treatment plant from engineering
fundamentals point of view (WK3). The explanation should exhibit the knowledge that support the
proposed engineering design (WK5). There is no obvious solution in this case (WP3).
3. Formulate the mass balance of the mobile wastewater treatment plant. The originality in the mass
balance analysis should be presented (WP3).
4. Owing to the conflicting requirements for the different wastewater parameters in designing the
treatment plant (WP2), design (C5) the best sizing for the wastewater treatment plants.
5. Discuss (A3) how would a mobile wastewater treatment plant aligned with the SDGs.

This is a group assignment.

1. You are required to form a group of 4-6 people.

2. The report shall not be more than 20 pages (single space, Arial Font 11). This includes diagrams,
equations, relevant pictures and calculations.
3. There should be at least 20 references for you to construct your report.
4. The report must be well organized and demonstrates a critical understanding on the wastewater
treatment plant proposed.

Deadline : 22 January 2024
