The Reason for Sneezes

Aaaaa . . . choo! When you have a cold, you often sneeze. Why? Because germs make a home in
your nose, and they tickle you! Sneezing is your body's way of sending germs out of your nose. All
your muscles push hard. Even your eyes push. That's why you close your eyes when you sneeze!
You should have a tissue ready because the sneeze happens very quickly.

____ 22. You often sneeze when you have a cold. _____

____ 23. Germs leave your body when you sneeze. _____

Stay Healthy!
Sometimes a cold starts with a cough or a sneeze. You're sick again! Colds are caused by
germs, which are tiny living things. Not all germs are bad, but sometimes they make us sick. Colds,
earaches, and stomachaches can all come from different kinds of germs. Here are the best ways to
stop the germs and stay healthy:
1) Wash your hands with soap and water often. Washing your hands will keep germs away and
help you stay healthy.
2) Don't touch your eyes, nose, or mouth unless you have to. The germs from colds move
quickly when they touch these parts of your body.
3) Don't visit people who are sick. If you touch them or something they touched, you may pick
up their cold germs.

If you do get sick, you can help other people by following these rules:
1) Stay home while you are sick. Keep your germs to yourself!
2) Move away from people when you cough or sneeze.
3) Cover your mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then throw the tissue away.
4) Wash your hands after you cough or sneeze.
